Well, yeah, I get that it's an alternative Europe. I just asked about the inspiration for the different countries and etc in this. You know, the different takes on it.

But what's the deal with always using names and stuff from nordic myths? There's gotta be a ton of other stuff from other places that sounds cool.

All I'm saying is not to read too much into it, the background was used as a backdrop for the theatre of war more than anything else, and I think the developers thought it cool to drop nordic myth stuff into the game.

I guess I should ask this here:

Are there any missables? This pertains to skills, characters, events or missions. I hate when games punish you (you, meaning my OCD) for not doing something utterly random or obscure, and I'd prefer not to read a FAQ to find this out in advance.

I still haven't picked this game up (lots of shit to buy, and sadly not all of it for me) but I will definitely right after christmas.

She thinks it's kinda dumb that time "stops" when you go into targetting mode. I told her it's a strategy game, not meant to be realtime, and she didn't get it. :(

It's cute when girls apply logic to a video game.

AND...jesus...this game is wicked difficult on some levels. It REALLY forces you to think...I love it.

I could really do without the porcavians however...

Not really, if you use the characters you like enough you'll get their skills eventually. As for weapons, the best ones are from your own factory and then you get a few as rewards later on. There are secret recruitable characters which you can consult a guide for or ask in here but they're just extras really and you can play the game without them if you wanted to.

Oh and there are side stories/missions you can get if you pay the reporter later on. Again these provide back story and can be done at any time. I can't think of any missables unless you're planning on a 100% completion save which would technically take more than 1 playthrough for various reasons.

FINALLY picked this game up and now I am at
The base for the first time, when you get to start recruiting.
Obviously I am very early in but I wanted to post some first impressions.

Really enjoying it so far, story is good and interesting. The gameplay is very fun and the new take on strategic battles makes for a more action filled experience, not something most associate with JRPGs (its also has much more depth than the demo lead me to believe).

The English VA is very nice, much better than most JRPGs I have played (I will likely do the Japanese VA on another playthrough), and of course the visuals are stellar, very vibrant and well crafted. There is a some aliasing with the outlines but the strong art style shines through.

I really hope more people pick this up, like a few others have mentioned maybe it'll be the type of game that sells little at once but plenty over time.

Only read the first 3 pages and it sounds compelling enough.

I only played the Japanese Demo early in the 08' and found it really awesome. If I never could get into Final Fantasy Tactics, will I enjoy this?

I'm not a big fan about TRPG games unless it is Arc the Lad :D

This game offers a more streamlined approach to customizing and leveling your characters. Grinding isn't as important as using proper tactics in battle. Though it is still considered a srpg, the removal of the grid/hex system for movement and attacking/defending makes this game feel a lot different from other games in the same genre. If you liked the demo, you'll love the game.

iDoubleSpy, I also couldn't get into FFT at all, I liked the setting but really didn't like the gameplay. I also bought Disgaea 3 to support rpgs on the ps3, didn't like it and sold it to a friend. But I LOVE valkyria chronicles, the art style, the story, the gameplay, it truly is a gem. There's always more than a single way to achieve a mission. For now, I am at chapter 17, I picked up Persona 4 so I kinda postponed finishing up the game since I know there are only two chapters left..

(My account just got approved and I am quite happy that my first post is in a thread I have been closely following over the past few months :D )

Can you are anyone comment on what it looks like in SD? If it looks like shit, imma just have to wait till I get my 24/26" monitor and use that as my primary gaming display.

Thanks for the help twice. If you help me for a third time, im going to be compelled to pick it up as a x-mas gift :p

I'd get this even if you have an sdtv, it'll make getting an hdtv even better when you pop it in for a 2nd play through or something just to see how great it looks. I remember how great Uncharted looked on my hdtv (I beat it on an sdtv, replayed it for trophies on my hdtv).

I've tried it at 480P, and it's very playable. Does detract from the artistic style a bit, but then I don't think those who would pass up a game simply due to slightly worse visuals are the type who would enjoy this game anyway.

Awesome Game, really is. Even on my crappy 32" CRT, I can still make out what it's saying and have a blast playing.

Most likely my favorite game of this Generation by Sega.

If you liked Twilight of the Spirits, you'll probably like this. Twilight had you fight battles in an arena environment, where you could move freely with each character's turn within a circular range, and then attempt to attack with that aiming triangle as long as it reached an enemy. It was still very "2D", but the break from the "grid" system and unique use of objects and hazards in the environment to your advantage carries over into Valkyria. Imagine instead of just rotating your aiming reticule 360 for say, an archer, you can now have aiming control along the X, Y, and Z axis, adding an additional layer to that mechanic. Now imagine instead of an overhead view, you have a more third-person view. You can also move units more than once. Twilight of the Spirits did have a map that you could go back and forth around, and towns to explore, though.

Just saw a story on Kotaku about the games poor sales in the uS, thats really disappointing. i hope its done better over here (the UK).

I havent picked it up yet a there have been to many tripple A stuff out recently but loved the demo and will certainly get it in January.

Are there different difficulties in the game? i only ask as even though i enjoy this sort of game (eg love the advance wars stuff) i always get to a point where i cant get any furthur because im just not that good at them!!

I also read it. Just 33,000 units sold in the US. That makes me sad.

Come on people, be realistic here. SRPGS are a tough sell and always will be, there's no changing this as people want action and don't want to be patient and to think. I bet the only reason it did over 100k in Japan is because of how it looks as there wasn't many reviews.

What a terrible article, the guy didn't even play the game before suggesting what should have been done. Porting it would have done next to nothing. You know why? It could have only been made on PC or 360, two platforms which it couldn't sell on install base alone either. It would have done more but... wouldn't have solved anything and development would have been a lot tougher with a custom engine. It couldn't have been made on Wii or PS2 because for one thing, the graphics would not be rendered like they are so that would need to change and stuff like draw distance would mean gameplay is different. Porting the game down is not what the developers would want to do and people should just be happy they got to experience the game at its highest level.

I think I'm going to pick this up soon. Just had so many games to play I've yet to even check out the demo. I want Fallout 3 as well but I may pick this up first.

I finally got to play this tonight after having it on my rack for weeks and I'm completely floored. It's an incredible work of art. The animation, the artistic design, the music. All of it is just brilliant.

The gameplay is there too, and it truly does harken back to the Sega of old. This game is the type of game that made me a Sega fan. If you're a Sega fan and you haven't tried this, you must. Amazing.

This probably isn't helpful at all, but I feel guilty with all the poor sales talk. I saw a review for this on gametrailers and my jaw literally dropped with how awesome this game looked. Unfortunately I then noticed it was PS3 only.

I did seriously consider buying a PS3 for this, but that's a little too expensive. I really wish this game had done better. I would be there day 1 100% if I had a PS3.

Well, 360 games seem to move about twice as many NA units as their PS3 counterparts. So 66,000. Not great, but IMO a hell of a lot better than what it got. Add some better publicity and a better release date...

(in all honesty, I'm holding out hope that long term sales and word of mouth about how awesome this game is will de-bomba it. But it's still on PS3, which is a major setback in that regard.)

As for PC, no argument there. PC gaming has its nitch, but SRPGs ain't it

I just started chapter 7. Chapter 6 was the first time I had to reload my save data due to some serious bungling. Man, I dislike how there are certain things that you can only figure out by trial an error!

For example, tank radiators take 1hp damage from regular shots! It's also immune to grenades! Wasted two turns figuring that out.

Didn't know grenades could destroy road blocks. Had to test that out myself.

Question:

Do Lancers have any competitive edge at all?? I haven't found any! They do less damage than tanks do, they have shit movement range, and are more vulnerable to bullets than scouts!

They can sneak behind tanks and take them out with one hit, and I'm not sure why you say they are more vulnerable to bullets than scouts. When you level up Lancers, they become bullet sponges and can really get out there and take hits from the enemy.

You'll find less and less uses for them as the game goes on, which is sad, but they are still a decent addition to the team - especially if you tag Largo and Jann together.

I agree that Lancers are probably the least useful class overall, but I still found that they have their uses, particularly for manouvering around enemy tanks to get to their radiators. As you level them up/get better armour their defense becomes really impressive, even without using any orders.

Given that losing your tank is an automatic fail, deploying Lancers against the enemy's heavy weaponry is less risky.

Lancers consume only 1CP, while tanks eat up 2. They are supposed to be more resistant to bullets than scouts. Also, i dont think tanks "have" potentials.
And they're smaller than tanks. There's at least one map on which i used backstreets to sneak lancers behind ennemy tanks. Those streets were too small to sneak a tank through.

Lancers, like snipers imo, are specialist units. They can't counter but if deployed properly they can give you the edge in any battle.

Lancers have their uses, a few more chapters in and you'll see. be sure to upgrade their armor, by the end of the game they can take an insane amount of enemy fire. Their usefulness (as opposed to using your tank) is their smaller size, ability to hide in grass, and ability to climb ladders in case you need to get up high. its easier for them to get behind a tank and point blank the radiator, rather than using the Edelweiss to do it, putting your own radiator in the open

It seems Lancers are near invulnerable to blast type weapons like grenades, but bullets just poke holes all over them. Largo went from full health to critical condition when he circled behind the tank on Chapter 6. That Shocktrooper really did a number on him. Or maybe it was the tank's machine gun. Either or, it drops the Lancer's usefulness in my opinion.

My shocktroopers were able to take down lancers in 10 bullets or less.

With their movement speed, Largo wasn't able to really catch up to the battle until much much later.

While tanks do take two stars to use, the amount of damage they do is equivalent to a Lancer taking two turns.

At what point do lancers start becoming less vulnerable to bullets?

Yes, my favorite is by far Shocktroopers. Followed very closely by high level Snipers. Then Alicia because of her potentials, then Engineers and other Scouts, and finally Lancers.

I use Lancers when Edelweiss is too weak, or when I need to send a bullet sponge to save someone closeby. Almost exclusively use Edelweiss for anti-armor operations.

I'm actually liking engineers quite a bit. They don't have as much sight range as scouts, but they're excellent at infiltration. With a 3-grenade cap, and just only 30% less movement range than a scout, they can do a shitload of damage to a camp. Really good get in, get out tactics with them.

Shocktroopers need a little more movement range to be useful. They're great for in-city encounters, but on large open fields, they are a bit lacking. Was able to do Skirmish 2 in one turn with just Rosie, but Skirmish 1 required Alicia.

Yeah, I like Engineers too just because they are SO useful and can do many things at the same time: Repair sandbags, refill ammo, clear minefield, and then repair Edelweiss. Their range is great too ! I don't use them as much as Scouts (unless I know the area is "safe") because I hate losing them.

Lancers are second best for clearing minefield. They are not as vulnerable compared to other foot soldiers.

Thank God!

I'm on the first huge fight in the dessert. Holy crap, when the reinforcements arrived I got absolutely slaughtered.

I cannot wait to get back to this game, I'm having a blast with just the game play, the rest is gravy.

Desert? That would be chapter 7? I just started there. Thanks for spoiling it for me (though I should expect reinforcements. I got slaughtered in Chapter 6 when my north team went in too early)

There are reinforcements in every fight, aren't there? It's not a surprise or anything though, the commander woman tells you to bust ass. I just happened to be all over the damn map.

I love going into a battle thinking I've got my strategy all worked out only to get my ass kicked and then return with a real workable one. I'm not very far in the game (chapter 6) but so far this game has me addicted.

The best way to offset ambushes or reinforcements is to have extra CP saved up. Try to be efficient as possible and keep your troops within running distance of each other.

No, Chapter 6 was the first story-driven reinforcements. My north team was at the gates of the camp, while my south team was still trying to take out the two lancers and the tank.

I lost my Engineer and Alicia in one turn and my shocktroopers were too far behind to do anything about it. I had thought I could flank them, but there were way too many troops in the camp itself. And with the reinforcements arrived, it was pretty much a lost cause.
