Valve Officially announces Source 2. (+ Steam Link + Steam Lighthouse)

Oh shit guys.

Valve and Nvidia are buddy buddy and have worked very closely together on SteamOS and Steam Machines, which means it's more than likely a Tegra chip that is powering the Steam Link. Nvidia is rumoured to be announcing tonight that they are working with TV makers to integrate Tegra chips into TVs to run Android games and whatnot. If this is the case, there's nothing stopping Steam Link-enabled SmartTVs.

it is the year 2020

all tvs are steam machines

all monitors are steam machines

all wristwatches are steam machines

however all the QOL doohickeys are still nintendo

All of my lol's. Just take them all.

I'm not sure why Source 2 is getting as much hoopla as it is.

Source 2's toolset has already been available for a while, and it's basically a very, very incremental upgrade of Source 1. It's still the same BSP brush-based engine at its core as before. Maybe they've upgraded it and changed that since Dota 2's mapping tools were released, but I remain skeptical until they show more.

You would have to pay me to use Source in any form when fully modernized (from the ground up) alternatives like UE4 and Unity are now free.

(There is one advantage of it being an incremental upgrade, though: TF2 and their other existing Source 1 games should be easier to transfer over to the new engine.)

Huh? It's not brush based at all anymore. It's all mesh.

So much misinformation here. Plus what is available at the mo is not even remotely complete. Hopefully someone with access to Source 2 will demonstrate the new stuff

I don't know how much of this you all still aren't sure about but I asked just a few questions of Valve about the Steam Link and was provided these responses.

Am I correct in thinking that this device is like a Google Chromecast but instead of streaming web content from a PC to a non-Smart TV, you can instead stream Steam games?
Correct on the first one.

Also, will the Steam Link work with controllers that are not Steam Controllers, such as the Xbox 360/One, and PlayStation 4 controllers? Will the controllers require wired connections to work or is wireless supported on Steam Link?
You can rig Link with another controller or mouse and keyboard if you prefer.

Finally, will Steam Link require a wired network connection or will it work just fine in a wireless network?
Link will work with a wire or wireless.

These were all asked right after the announcement was made so it may all be old to everyone now.

I'll admit it's been a while since I tried the new Hammer, glad to hear it's mesh-based (I stand corrected!) but from what I remember using the new Hammer, I left feeling really unimpressed. The interface was a cluttered mess. Hopefully they've improved that.

Valve is notorious for releasing buggy, crashy modding tools and then never updating them. The old Source SDK languished for a decade with hardly any major updates or fixes, despite the modding community's constant pleas (and all this from a company that built its success off mods, which is sad). The way Valve handled the Source 1 SDK doesn't inspire much confidence from me in the support they will give to Source 2 in the future. Just thinking of how much the old Hammer crashed on me makes me wary.

Anyway, I'm definitely getting the Steam Link. $50 to have my enormous Steam library in the living room is a really great deal. Though I wonder if this is really much better than just buying a cheaper $35 Raspberry Pi 2 instead.

Will steamlink run xbmc? Thats the important question.

The Steam Link box runs SteamOS, and SteamOS is linux, and Valve has always said that SteamOS won't be locked down and will be open to modding and whatnot, and XBMC/Kodi runs on Linux. So it would be really surprising if it didn't.

I need some screenshots of Source 2, I need it to blow my mind like Source did. I hope that they show something with great physics.

Right now, the only thing they might have to show for Source 2 is the updated version of Dota 2. The problem here is that it's still using all of the same assets. Meaning, you won't really realize it's on a new engine if everything else is kept the same. They also aren't going to go and drastically change Dota 2 right now with different assets either because my God, the shitstorm that would ensue from the community if they did.

I'm convinced Valve may have had games in development. After the success of selling hats, Dota 2, and Steam itself having continued success Valve feels they don't need to make games anymore.(and to be honest, they don't)If we ever get another game from Valve, it's all fan service. They definitely don't need the money and owe it to anyone.

I'm certain Valve are about to announce:
Half-Life 3
Portal 3
Left 4 Dead 3
Counter-Strike 2
Day of Defeat 2
Ricochet 2
Team Fortress 3
Team Fortress Classic 2

I can feel it in my bones. It's time.

Yeah, the company that has been focusing most of its effort on f2p garbage and microtransactions instead of what its fans actually want is totally going to announce all of that at once. Totally!

Whoa, that's not really fair to say! Let's be a bit realistic here!

The fans want Ricochet 2? C'mon.

Personally I'm hoping that the version of Source 2 we've already seen with the Dota 2 tools was not the full thing. If it is then I'll be disappointed, but it looks like they'll talk about it more at Thursday's conference on glNext (or "Vulkan").

If you give their "f2p garbage" a chance, you'll probably see that they are among the best their respective genres have to offer.

This is true, however Valve is in a very privileged position where pretty much all their games are critically acclaimed and dearly loved by the fans. They have a shot at a truly remarkable legacy, I can't see them riding off into the sunset and never making a game again.

My gut says Source 2 won't be an insane state-of-the-art visual engine like, say, Unreal Engine 4 or whatever. Or at least demonstrated as such. Not that it won't look gorgeous, but current Valve doesn't strike me as that sort of company. They'd be more about an engine that scales extremely well across hardware configurations, has tools and workflow very easy to develop with, and excels at processing effects/simulations that have the strongest potential for gameplay (eg: physics).

After the success of selling hats, Dota 2, and Steam itself having continued success Valve feels they don't need to make games anymore.

Honestly, I really don't think this is the case, as in whatever Valve is up to is 100% business driven and a potential desire to no longer create (for example) Half-Life style games is due to them no longer being necessary. If such a scenario exists I see it more that internally staff at Valve have no motivation to work on projects like that any more. Without being made formal, this is more or less the consensus why Episode 3 never eventuated; the team was tired as fuck burning out on the franchise, and moved on to other, more exciting projects. That's (seemingly) Valve's work culture. If motivation from senior staff isn't there to work on a particular IP/project, it won't happen.

Left 4 Dead 3 is a shoe-in though unless it's been scrapped recently or it hit some motivational snag. And it'll make them a killing like the last two games did. The real question is when/if we'll see single player Valve games again.

This is the most childish way to demonstrate that one has basically no idea how Valve works or what it has stated in the past. Like, not even minimal effort. Just childish nagging.
