Very disappointed so far with the Xbox One S. What's going on here?

Fucking shit since it won't bitstream HD audio formats. Piece of shit.

Lets just say I'm fucking mad as hell about this since the only reason I bought this piece of trash was to play 4k films. Not only that but the RGB settings are FUCKED to all hell and the gamma curve completely destroys any dark scenes. I completely missed the goddamn intro sequence in ReCore where Joule is in the home base for the first time because the entire screen just went fucking black.

I know Penello said they MS is looking at getting a patch for the audio formats but I really hope there's something on that front soon. I'd hate to buy a standalone player when I have a One S already. My own fault for not doing more research though.

Calm down...they are patching bitstreaming

Was it confirmed? I thought it was just "we're discussing it".

Sitting here watching football and decided to record how it does in the middle of doing this. Here you go. Nothing annoying here..at least...that I see. I mean, unless like less than half a second (1/4 second/1/8th/10th/..hahanot actually timing it) or faster bothers you. The "slowest" part of the video is the snap apps appearing, but it's literally a very short time, and snapping the football game was fast. If I used Kinect I could have even said "Xbox Snap TV" and it would have done it instantly, no need to do it from that menu, but even the menu wasn't bad to use and I wanted to try it with a controller for once. The snapped TV (football game) runs fine too. Everything switched, navigated, even looked at my games, apps, and the store/tab section. Seems fine to me? No?

Granted I didn't test everything, but just switched through what I might do on a regular interaction. I like to snap sports and play Horizon.

This is OG X1 too, my time with the S seemed quicker this weekend. Maybe I have a freak X1, lol.

(forgive me for holding the controller right next to the microphone..haha..and my daughter coughing at the beginning X-D)

https://youtu.be/yjkz_nooqWc <--- My UI video.

Not saying people don't have problems, just showing my own interaction ;)

I was using mine the exact same way. Watching football while playing Halo: CE on MCC. The video was stuttering. Enough to ruin the game of football.

For an "entertainment system" so far the games are aliased enough to cut my eyes on, the color is IMPOSSIBLE to correct for, movies don't support BASIC, nearly decade old, audio formats, and the menu is a buggy, laggy, atrocious mess that's a goddamn unintuitive nightmare to navigate.

Do you have a cable box running thru it? I use the OTA USB tuner and it never stutters when i had comcast cable for tv i would see some stuttering.

I want bitstreaming as much as the next guy as i have a nice 7.1 setup but honestly 7.1 uncompressed sound really good i honestly can't tell the difference between playing the revenant on my xbox one s vs playing on my sony dedicated player in proper bitstream they both sound great. I will welcome the addition of bitstreaming of course as i have been vocal about it in the preview forums.

I have zero fucking faith in them to correct this in a timely fashion. The system's issues stem beyond just bitstreaming. Given that it's already been nearly 3 years and what I'm experiencing is allegedly, already vastly improved from launch, this fills me with a sense of hopelessness I've not experienced from a consumer product before.

I agree that the UI is slow, buggy and poor compared to the 360. I can't believe they released a new UI based on Windows 10, and it was just as awful.

For those wondering how sluggish the xbox store can get, here's how it runs on my xbox (not slim), specifically the Backwards Compat section (but it clearly already struggles just trying to get there). Sorry for my phone constantly focusing but I wanted to get the controller in view too just to show the response times.

While not in the video, there are also times when the cursor would get stuck offscreen, forcing me to exit back to the dashboard to get things moving again

The only people that defend it are one console owners. Hard to know the experience is mediocre when its the only one your used to.

I'm sure most people on GAF at least have a last-gen system to compare it to. In my case, I have all the current and last gen consoles, except the PS3 and PS4. The XB1 UI beats out the 360, Wii, and Wii U quite handily in terms of speed and ease of use.

That has to be internet based. Also, the BC stuff does tend to be slow..I think it takes time to connect to 360 crap or something, The store itself is fast for me.

Just copied you. I did the same thing. It wasn't lightening fast, but it was FAR faster than what you did. Picked the same options even.

Weird

How do you navigate PS3 Store on XB1??? :P
Bro! The PS3 store doesn't work who you kidding :) seriously I have my super slim in my room for PS Vue and the store doesn't load I use my phone.

On the Xbox store it has to be affected by network and connection speed because mine is fast but so is my network and connection.

That's crazy slow!

There's hardly any lag for me except when I go into the BC section or into my Ready to Install screen. I think it's because both of those screens are trying to load a ton of images.

Yea, that's an extreme case. Your experience isn't indicative of mine.

Took a page out of your book and did my own video.

Does it stutter, sure as shit it does. Nowhere near as bad as yours I can say for sure.

Also I'm hardwired btw

1. Snapping at times can be unstable.

2. Party chat problem has been a constant occurrence in the preview program. Other than that I have not had much problems.

3. You keep looking at the score card pressing a button that switches party to game or game to party. There is a quick option there when you view the card as you play. For me it is the "B" button.

4. HDMI audio needs to be set to off.

5. It is your friends headset that is resulting in low mic audio. Yes, there is no way to adjust it, but the only times I ever had trouble hearing anyone was cause they had an issue with their headset or the mic being far away. Also noise gating with the astro mixamp tr.

6. Never had that happen.

7. I have had the one since launch. All of my UI problems came from being in the preview program. Once the issue was resolved, I did not have a problem. At launch, the OS was bit a slow, but I never experienced input delay.

8. Never had a game lock up in the install process so I cannot comment here.

9. I do not used my one for TV nor do I watch TV so I cannot comment here.

10. Halo MCC is garbage. I stay away from it.

11. The only time I have ever had problems with Halo 5 was after 2 different patches, but that was the initial week said patches. Other than that I have not really had any problems with said game.

Hey guys,

My two friends and I are PS4 owners and recently decided to each pickup an xbox one s halo bundle. We played halo all the time on 360 and we recently felt the urge to play again. A few days after getting the consoles, we are already looking at returning them. I'm trying to figure out what's the deal. We've had a few issues and I will name a few of them and see if you guys could shed some light.

-Snapping things to the side is pretty much unusable. TV snapping stutters no matter what game I am playing. Twitch causes MCC to crash. Going from a snapped app to the main game is unreliable. It takes a few seconds for the main game to become responsive or it stays frozen altogether.

-Party chat. We frequently have the audio drop out and say there is a network error. We start a new party and everything is fine again.

-Party Chat. I will randomly get switched to game chat and vice versa. Very confusing in the middle of a match.

-Headphones. On PS4, when you route game audio to the headset it automatically mutes the sound coming from tv/speakers. Do you really have to mute your tv/speakers manualy on xbox one?

-Mic audio - is there not a way to adjust your own mic input to the console? One of our friend's mic is really quiet compared to everyone else. Does he have to buy that headset controller adapter to get that functionality?

-Headset audio dropouts. Game audio will randomly dropout, leaving only chat audio. Sometimes, the reverse happens. Sometimes both drop out. The fix is to remove headset from controller and plug it back in.

-Disk drive - while installing Halo 5, my friends disk drive was making a loud noise. His recording sounded like a washing machine.

-User Interface. This is the one I'm most dissapointed about. I expected Microsoft's prowess with software to be refreshing coming from the PS4, but it's extremely lacking IMHO. The UI is cluttered and extremely laggy at times. Button presses take seconds to register. Menu options can be all over the place.

-When installing Halo 5, the intall process froze multiple times for all of us and required us to pause/unpause the install to get it working again.

-I couldn't get my xbox one to change my tv channels. I thought this was a feature. Maybe this is my fault, but I thought it shouldn't be that hard.

HALO: MCC:

-Lots of freezes on startup. The microsoft studios logo will freeze everytime I startup. Sometimes the entire game freezes.

-After multiplayer games, it kicks you out instead of searching for another game.

HALO 5:

-When launching halo 5. It crashes on the splash screen back to the xbox home screen sometimes, requiring restart.

-Forge file browser. This is not showing as available for 2 of us. The third accesses it just fine. Mine was working one day and not the next.

-Halo reqs. Anytime one of my friends accessed his req's during warzone, the system says something like "Retrieving data", He was also never able to look at the previous game's scoreboard while waiting in the lobby.

-Forge maps. There are alot of maps that have moving parts of the level. These will stop moving completely in all parts of the map for many minutes at a time. This made maps unplayable.

-The game's graphics are disapointing. Is multiplayer 1080p? It looks low res at times with lots of aliasing and shimmering. On some maps, the environment textures lack any detail at all.

-Random disconnects during multiplayer

-"Can't reserve dedicated server" errors when starting games

Did we get a bad batch? Are these issues common? I hadn't heard any complaints like this before ordering.

This is what mine is like pretty much all the time.

I don't know what would cause it to go slower for some people, but MS should optimize it so that it loads quickly for everyone.

Could it be because I'm on wireless? The spot where my consoles are has really good wifi coverage, to the point where I can stream games to my laptop/shield portable there wirelessly at max bandwidth. Still, that just seems like awful design when my other online devices like phones, ps4, etc (heck even my TV's own apps) run just fine, regardless of connection quality.

The important part to me is games run well, but it's just unfortunate that I have to sometimes deal with how slow the store can get (for me it seems :(), and the often bad input delay I get everywhere else outside of gaming.

Holy shit! That's unacceptable at this day and age. Wow.

This is exactly how my brand new Xbox One S behaves (no Preview Program, fully updated)

Navigating my Xbox One has been almost as big of a headache as navigating my PS3. There's a reason why both those consoles are collecting dust compared to my PS4.

Pretty much my experience. Especially the store.

Well if this is how it is for some people... yeah there's something wrong with the console's UI, absolutely.

This is beyond frustrating to watch. I wouldn't expect this level of performance from a $100 tablet, much less a $400 dedicated TV input.

I was disapointed with the xbox one s at first. Constant UI lag compared to the OG Xbox One, buggy, games crashing.

A week later, it all just stopped. I don't know if there was a stealth update or if the system itself needed time to truly install everything while letting me use it, but all issues (and I had some like yours) just went away.

The UI is still clunky, but no more than it has been. The lag is gone, channel surfing works, yada yada.

The only thing that is notable is the included HDMI cable with the system I got was bad. When I changed it out, it fixed some issues I had with my cable box.

The new Xbox unuversal store is indeed a pain in the ass. The old one though wasn't this slow even if it looked bad.

I'm actually rewatching what I just uploaded and for some reason, I'm just holding my breath with every action, not knowing when the xbox is going to respond to my inputs.

For an "entertainment system" so far the games are aliased enough to cut my eyes on, the color is IMPOSSIBLE to correct for, movies don't support BASIC, nearly decade old audio formats, and the menu is a buggy, laggy, atrocious mess that's a goddamn unintuitive nightmare to navigate.

To say that I hate this system is an understatement. I hate this thing like AM hates humanity. There aren't words for it's offensiveness to common design sensibilities, or to industry standards. Every inch of me winces at this fucker's existence in my home theater cabinet. It's poison made plastic and silicon. It can royally go fuck itself.

Keep waiting on that PS5.

There was a survey about it in the preview program. Atmos support is definitely something they're strongly considering at the very least.

Hmm. It seems to handle a slow internet connection poorly.

Here is my system. It's night and day:
https://youtu.be/M6emUQ5d9u8

Under Detailed network statistics I have
Latency 82ms
Download Speed 57.98 Mbps
Upload Speed 56.66 Mbps

Gerald's experience with the store is EXACTLY how mine is on my wired connection. My connection is fine for everything else just like he states. Please, it's slightly frustrating for a bunch of people to call out others as exaggerating or lying because their experience differs. You having a good experience doesn't make it flawless for everyone. I hate that we have to go to detective-GAF levels sometimes to have a real discussion as everyone thinks conspiracy. It's absolutely terrible. 8 minutes to look at pics for 3 games in the store for me.

The home OS isn't too bad, but sometimes there is a second or 2 delay when I'm running a game which is annoying. I have to use my phone for all messages now.

Edit: In my detailed statistics I have 54.64 down, 6.12 up and 97ms atm. 1480, no packet loss etc. Store is garbage.

Also my PSN speeds are ALWAYS faster than XBL. I must be the 1% based on most posters. It's at 63.2 down.

I was wondering about this. the 360 black scale is also fucked and they never bothered to fix it. how are we supposed to trust MS to do HRD properly when they cant even get proper 0-255 black scaling done?

Ok, here's what I did just now. I disabled the Instant On setting (because I read that having that enabled can makes things slow?), went offline and powered off the xbox. Upon booting back up, the system was snappy again. I then went online and checked the store and everything seemed to be working quickly again. The BC section was still very slow, but it was responding much more quicker than in that video of mine earlier.

I then booted up the Forza Horizon 3 demo and then went back to the dashboard with the game in the background. Shit, the overall sluggishness made a comeback...

I think it's purposeful. They have a shit sharpening and saturation filter because people think it makes the colors "pop" instead of properly calibrating their TV. Also lots of people don't realize that realistic colors are better than bright. I want to say there have been some quotes but I can't be sure.

Here's one I just did on my One S. Notice the only section it goes slow is when I load the BC section and I'm guessing it's because it takes a while to load all of the games' covers. Everything else is super smooth, and that was waking up my Xbox One from sleep. While some people might say they have issues, mine has always been an awesome experience. Also, it was the same on my Day 1 Xbox One.

What DNS settings are you using for your xbox/ or your network. If name resolution is slow many internet related features could be slowing everything down. Change your DNS on your router or your Xbox itself to 8.8.8.8 or 4.4.4.4 (Google DNS), reboot your Xbox fully, and try again.

Totally and completely serious. Name resolution problems can gum up the works on any network.

Better network, better ui performance. That video looks like slow network. Bad design by MS imo but it's never bothered me as my network is fast so my xbone is as well.

I do wish they would have kept the 360 ui as it was quick and easy. Changing settings for anything was way quicker. But they had to add all those advertisements into the ui which slows things down. Especially if you're on a slow network or xB live is having issues.

I have my PS4 on the same network and it loads things in the store instantly. Both wired. I don't think you can just blame a bad network.

That's a good suggestion, but I have been using google's public DNS servers for quite a while now.

I think it may be related to having a game running in the background and I never close a running game. Maybe that's why the UI has always been slow for me?

Edit:
I tried having MCC running in the background and things were still slow. I exited the game, and lol things continued to be slow. I don't know man, shit's frustrating.

Detailed net stats (5ghz wireless) for me btw:
Down: 52.99 Mbps (I have a 150Mbps connection if that matters)
Up: 11.95 Mbps
Packet loss: 0%
MTU: 1480
Latency: 15 ms
Wireless Strength: 100%

Why would network connection affect input response though? Shouldn't it still let me navigate around those empty boxes while things load?

ya i think I have been through those threads about those topics already and im pretty sure they removed the sharpening filter. its just the black scale that still remains.

That's exactly how the XB One that my brother owns performs in the store.

It was enough to convince me to hold off and abandon my "Own everything" plan that I've been keeping to for the past 3 or so generations.
