VGC: Netflix games boss says ‘8-Year-olds aren’t dreaming of PlayStation 6’

I’d say the headline is correct. They don’t care about the next cutting edge console. Some care about Switch 2 but only in the way that you care about another iPhone. It’s not the same. It’s definitely not anywhere near what my generation experienced from console to console. Likely because console generations are no longer industry transformative leaps in fidelity and ability.

These company executives and CEOs are severely out of touch and stupid. They don't know their audience and keep wasting money and blowing billions of dollars on bullshit that appeals to an imaginary audience in their heads.
They are completely out of touch with the masses. And its just marketing ploy of Netflix to discredit console business. Given a chance by parents with enough budget, most kids still wants a console, there eyes brightens up when they see a console game on TV, and excited to play a game when they touch a controller.

8 year olds are into roblussy, and Fortnite and Coco Melon, I don't know. But kids will always get into what's popular among their peers. As they age into their teens, they'll want more mature games and get the leading console. The mobile trash that's on Netflix isn't where it's at for anyone.

Exactly kids dont know shit about fuck and they dont control anything. the older mature people do. Kids buy what is made and will just go to what is popular which is whatever stuff older youtubers hype up. Each generation grows up and makes what they think is cool. Thats what the current 8 year olds will be playing in the far future. Its The cricle of life. Its not up to some big boss dude to act like he can see the future and create some in real life kid battle pass where a kid is hooked on his season 1-40 year timeline of netflixcraft or netflix roblox tablet. People are living longer and longer that means more and more adults are coming. You make things for the current audience in the present that have money.

Yeah, very strange to look at the market as if it was still in the 8/16-bit era.

To be honest I feel like consoles appear to older gamers more than PC because of the promise of less friction/need for upkeep. I mean, speaking for myself I have a bunch of PC's that are rarely used for gaming because they are basically dedicated to other purposes. I have media boxes in the living room/bedroom, one in the office for personal work and general daily use, and one used as basically an emulation box. As well as a work laptop that is only used for business.

For Gaming I have PS5 and Xbox.

Not saying my setup is typical, just that as someone who's on older side keeping a church/state separation between things is a real plus. I'm not a kid living in his bedroom so splitting utility across rooms/devices isn't an issue. The only thing that I kinda think about is look and space, so for example the meda boxes are just slightly beefed up DELL's in MIni ATX cases so they fit neatly under the TV and are essentially silent.

Gaming may be a life-long habit, but it doesn't mean your needs and outlook doesn't change over time.

Its pretty goofy to me Netflix talking about the future of gaming when they have zero track record in that market-place, especially as gaming isn't just "content". It seems to me the exact same stupid misconception that MS has had for years that you can package games the same way as any other sort of media.

A massive fallacy in my view as the way people *actively* interface and consume games is very different than the *passive* mode of TV or movies.

I know we gave our 8 year old (at the time) a Kindle with an Amazon Kids sub. It sure as hell wasn’t a Netflix published game. We already had a kid’s profile on Netflix. I don’t get how they’re so outspoken about 8 year olds. What is it about 8 year olds? Dude sounds a bit odd for his job title.

Anyone who thinks they can ascertain what 8 years olds will want in 3 years when they're 11 should put massive amounts of money into the stock market.

Not sure anyone was guessing kids were "dreaming" of fornite or switch 3 years before they released.

Yes, this is the definitive person to go to about the direction of gaming. :messenger_expressionless:

That aside:

As someone who first played games in an arcade and has never stopped enjoying them over the years - it's always a bit chilling to see how strictly business-oriented people see it. I don't deny that gaming is a business, but the people who are good at it understand it's more than just "any digital screen" - ie. putting in the absolute least amount of effort in understanding why people love games and why certain games/platforms succeed over others.

It's the mark of people who have never been gamers, and don't actually understand the business they are running. The idea of one platform to play your games on, on any screen, etc. is extremely enticing, it sounds great. But talk to any real gamer who has tried to play a game on their phones or even an ipad. Sure you can connect a controller with bluetooth, but the device is not a good experience. It's the same way these CEOs look at the "total gaming market" and views shit tier mobile games as a legitimate part of the industry. It may as well be a completely different medium - they are nothing like a real full fledged console or PC game.

Touchscreens as we know them are not the future. The kids who start out gaming on tablets will get ahold of DualSense controllers and never look back.

He works for a streaming company. PlayStation is his competition. That’s why he’s saying this. Netflix would happily press a button that destroyed every console and console game in history if it meant an extra 3,000 people operating the Netflix menu with an Xbox controller.

Those three games (games?) won’t last forever. They’ll be replaced. Those little keychain Tomodachis that you carried around with you in the 2000s were all the rage, and now who knows who even made those things. Haven’t seen em in 20 years. Remember fidget spinners? Oh Lord. Kids fads come and go.

They’re dreaming of playing phone games included with their MILFs Netflix account?

Both wrong. They’re dreaming of getting the next Goku smoking a bong skin in Fortnite

This. It’s also the reason they are not even dreaming of owning consoles anymore. They just want tablets these days. They might like a bit of super Mario, but that’s about it.

I do t know why people are getting triggered. A Netflix exec may have zero understanding of the game market, but it’s no secret that kids these days prefer to play on mobile devices. They won’t even touch single AAA games most of the time. This makes console gaming redundant to their generation. A generation hat is used to having a peice of mobile tech Pretty much attached to them at all times. That’s the world they live in. Some people just can’t see it, and that’s part of getting old. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Home console wil always have a place with this of us over a certain age but I think people under 20 do t give a shit about consoles.

I'm so glad my kids don't really give a shit about video games outside of what I play very occasionally with them present (Astro Bot usually). Kids that age should have as little screen time as possible in my view anyway, let them use their imaginations. Fortnite, Roblox and all that sort of shit is turning their minds into mush.

I mean, he isn't necessarily wrong.
Anecdotally most of the younger kids in my family are more interested in getting tablets and phones than consoles, and teens seem to be increasingly more into PC than consoles (as someone said earlier, I do think streamers are a big factor in this).

That said, the whole "consoles are doomed" argument is still BS. The console market is still massive, and the 8 years old kid that wants to play shitty mobile games will eventually turn 12 and want to play COD and GTA and Marvel Rivals and stuff like Helldivers 2 and Monster Hunter, and consoles will continue being the more affordable and easy entry point to these types of games.

Well, it's true most children won't play in say, 25 years. Now they may be doing something with the tablet or the smartphone, but that won't last.

Only a small percentage of them will adhere to gaming, buy a gaming PC or the last Playstation or Nintendo consoles available and cutting edge games with high production values.

That small percentage will be the 100-120million core gamers of the future that will keep the dream alive.

Geez, I remember envisiong what video games could be when I was playing Pong on a Pong console around 76-77. Something like riding a bike around town but only in a 3-d world. Of course I was doing that in real life but I needed to see this on screen as a game. LOL!!! Then we got Paperboy later of course and then Shenmue and GTA later.

Thing is if this tech is already here when you are born, it's not exciting, its just something that existed before them and it's just a part of reality. I think every new generation needs something that speaks to them more directly. What came before will never do it for them.

Even though I mainly game on consoles, we now have a decent PC and a growing steam library because my 12 year old wanted one. His friends in 6th grade prefer PC/mobile gaming instead of consoles. Plus they don't seem to care about graphics really.
