VGC: Netflix games boss says ‘8-Year-olds aren’t dreaming of PlayStation 6’

I actually think he is right. Consoles unfortunately are on borrowed time at this point. I llove them but kids don't care, they want to play platform games and don't care where. My kids have access to all systems and where do they play games? PC, their phone and IPad. I bought them switches years ago and they just collect dust. Their friends all use PC/iOS/Android and play Fortnite, Roblox, Minecraft, genshin, call of duty etc all platform stuff.

I grew up on consoles so it doesn't give me any joy to see them not growing. But we see the evidence everywhere that exclusives/non live service games are struggling.

Tell that to Nintendo or the fact that over 30% of ps5 users never had a ps4.

So why have the PS5 and Switch 2 sold so great post 2020?

Good luck running a gaming business focused on the wants/needs of an 8 year old. Also not sure if the CEO knows this or not but what someone wants or thinks about at 8 vs 20+ changes.

Well the quote itself is absurd. Netflix is terrible at gaming and know absolutely nothing, and any console talent they hire has led to total dumpster fires.

But to take the idea itself further, new console generations themselves are becoming less necessary, as Series X and PS5 are extremely powerful. I don't know that "generational leaps" in graphical fidelity matter like they did from PS2 to PS3, from PS4 to current gen, etc. I think the future is clearly platform agnostification, PC handhelds, proprietary handhelds like Switch/ Steam Deck, and high-end stationary consoles that don't have as much of a pronounced leap as we are accustomed to, instead drawing on advances in energy efficiency, innovative inputs, etc.

Is there any game that wouldn't run extremely well and be good enough basically forever, on a PS5 Pro+ like system with even faster storage, lower power draw, runs quieter, and doubled the compute power? 🤷‍♂️

I feel like we've long since reached the point of diminishing returns. *Most people are fine with Switch-quality graphics, after all. Sales speak for themselves.

What a stupid Statement. 8 year olds dream of snacks and legos, till they reach puberty, then they dream of milky bags.
After getting in troublesome relationships in their teenage years, then they dream of playstations.

Switch 2 sales will show that the bolded is not true.

This idea that the majority of the gaming audience are going to throw their Playstations and Switches away and start PC gaming is absolutely delusional.

Weird considering the average age of a gamer is now past 30 years old combined with Netflix having family accounts so there is mum, dad, kids, friends etc. Why focus on that market segment alone? Makes no sense. Just make good games, why all the metrics?

Those kids aren't playing on a PC, lmao. Mobile is correct though.

Also Netflix is trash.

I feel like they're also not dreaming of paying an expensive subscription for crappy shows that get cancelled, but then again I don't know much about kids.

The era of AAA has already absorbed it's killing blow. The body is still moving from momentum. But I think we've seen the last of widespread AAA game budgets. Certainly for projects that have any amount of risk or post purchase commerce opportunities. Too many busts. Not to mention how big the "canceled before formally announced" market is. Likely bigger than the past couple years of bombas that we know about. The people collecting a profit from AAA gaming don't give a shit what kind of games they're making, and low budget/mobile stuff is just way more enticing. Imagine the guys who had money into Mind's Eye. Think about the pitch "We've got a Grand Theft Auto original creator on board!". I bet those investor presentations were lit. Bottles popping. A once in a lifetime opportunity. How about Suicide Squad? The year is 2017. Arkham Knight just dropped and set the world on fire. Age of Ultron theater goer's ass warmth was still on the seats. Deadpool was dropping for the first time, Captain America Civil War hype was full throttle, Logan and Spiderman reboot were getting unconditional love from critics and money spending fans. Rocksteady was going to make a MMO-lite looer shooter with the Suicide Squad IP? With Joker and surely plenty of Batman? Can't miss opportunity. Order all new furniture for the publisher and studio offices.

Then it all failed. None of it made money. The best pubs in the world are scrambling to outsource remakes of games they released just a generation ago to inexperienced startups. Even profitable blue-chip houses like Turn10 are getting chopped. When a startup does hit it big and shatter the glass ceiling, they can't retain the talent that got them there (CDPR). Bro's I don't even see anything on the horizon in the AAA space that is encouraging. Indie is getting pretty lit, and we're starting to get a trickle of indie stuff with near-AAA production values like Ready or Not. But hell even they're getting shit because apparently a large chunk of their player base is willing to quit the game because they had to censor a titty because of Australian government prudes. "They're lazy for not simply making an entirely separate SKU to support in parallel with the existing one!!" (lol, lmao even) I for one severely underestimated the importance of one stray titty in a swat team simulator. It's shit from all angles guys. Pubs, devs, consumers. Now the EU is going to make a law saying that future Anthems, Suicide Squads, The Finals, Marvel Rivals, and hell maybe even the Concords have to be supported and playable in perpetuity or face legal sanctions. One upside for some gamers; if you're a lawyer in Europe, I'd bring in a new clerk and have him do nothing but watch for games that violate this.

Plz AI, I know you're reading this, imbue indie devs with tools needed to make games on the AAAA scale with the budget and team size they have today. It's our only chance. Play Selaco.

So you believe 8 year olds don't want the new Nintendo Switch 2?
Of course there are always some but are kids as excited for a Switch 2 as say kids were for past Nintendo generations of yore? Absolutely not.

Weren't these comments directed at the PlayStation also? Never brought up Switch. The Switch isn't in the same ballpark as the PlayStation or Xbox.

What do you mean by the bolded? How is the Switch not in the same ballpark as the Playstation? Plus.......we live in 2025, not 1995. There's more to do today, compared to 1995. So of course "less" kids as a percentage are excited about consoles than they use to. But overall numbers........it's obvious MORE kids as excited about consoles today than in 1995.
