Videogamer.TV: KSI and Xbox: Why Microsoft Got it Wrong

Matt's got an important point he'd like to make. (Comedy videos will resume shortly.) You can read more about what happened at EGX here: http://bit.ly/13zNVB7

YouTube celebrity KSIOlajidebt - real name Olajide Olatunji - seems to be getting lots of work with EA, Xbox, BT Sport, and Channel 5's The Gadget Show. This video explains why many of these brands are being fairly iffy by doing so.

After watching this, I'm really surprised MS would hire a guy like KSI to represent them. What the heck is happening to their PR department?

KSI is a cool dude. He has both consoles as well.

Fair enough this guy doesn't enjoy KSI's sense of humour.

I don't appreciate this dudes whiny videos. Turned it off after a minute.

Absolutely agreed. This needs more exposure.

He does make extremely valid points in the video. This guy's behaviour at the expo sounds totally gross!

And yeah, you're an exemplar of his point.

The guy is a pig. I'm glad someone is bringing this up.

I must be dense or something, but can you explain why he's funny?

KSI is an absolute shit. I worked with a production company earlier in the year and they ended up making a couple of videos with him because of this 4 million subscriber number. At least one of the people involved knew about the Eurogamer video, but no idea if anyone else did which is very, very disappointing.

I've taken my girlfriend to trade shows before such as Eurogamer and Gamescom and she already finds it extremely awkward when you have a tirade of men ogling booth babes - stuff like this, like Matt says, does put women off from attending the events.

I think this post is a pretty good example of the point Lees is trying to make.

Well said by Matt. Well done for highlighting it.

I remember the EG Expo controversy surrounding him and all the shit I got for a piece I wrote about it.

Where I have seen that dude's face before? Was he at Eurogamer Expo this year in London? I think I've seen him on Gadget Show.

Have other dodgy Youtubers like DarksydePhil been used for similar corporation marketing gigs?

Not cool, Microsoft. Might have to tweet them.

"Should be killed" was a bit too far, didn't really need that. Agreed with the rest of it though. Glad someone started to challenge this all, otherwise companies are just going to keep using him. Nothing will change it no one does anything, so good on you Matt.

I respect Matt for bringing up this issue cuz companies such as Microsoft should have done their homework and checked this guys history and not only look at the amount of subscribers and hire his name based on that.

Whoa whoa! I should add for context that the "should probably be killed" bit was in reference to people who treat restaurant staff badly because they think that's part of the service they're paying for.

But yeah, I should probably also clarify that it was a joke. I don't actually think those people should be killed. Well, not whole-heartedly, anyway.

Glad the video is appreciated though - I find it worrying how many media outlets are more interested in 'leveraging the reach' of YouTubers to help promote their brands than they are in actually calling them out on their often abhorrent behavior. I expect the wave of KSI fans to crush me to death on Twitter within a couple of hours. Internet: It's been nice knowing you.

Ugh..

Well reasoned argument from Matt there, some good old fashioned journalism, the kind of which we're always asking for.

That "where are your tit's?" comment... ugh, and the *awkward silence pushes mic into boobs thing* as well. Guy seems like an arsehole.

Firstly, a huge thanks to Matt for including a link to the article I wrote about this bullshit following the events of EGX. As I said on Twitter, I have a relatively small voice in this industry and it's great to have folks like Matt make issues like this more prominent.

There was a lot of discussion around Xbox's decision to hire him for the XB1 London launch event on Twitter and Facebook and this video sums up the thoughts of the majority of those in the press perfectly.

Matt always seems like a super guy.

I'm glad he takes the time to highlight something like this, especially considering that in doing so he's probably opening himself up to another big slice of internet abuse. More power to him.

I thought as much, thanks for the clarification though, made me cringe a little bit when you said it. But as I said, glad you brought this issue up because it's just going to continue if no one does anything.

Regarding the "KSIarmy" as I think they're called, you're probably going to get the sterotypical 13-year-old responses of "hah gay" "bet this guy doesn't gave a gf" "learn to take a joke dick" etc. That whole fanbase is convinced KSI is a "lad" and it's all "banter". Ergh. You should stick your Twitter on private for a few hours or overnight once everyone else has started to share the video, save yourself the hassle. Good luck!

The thing I have an issue with is ambushing people and insulting them the way he did the mountain dew woman; that was just flat out fucked up and there was nothing funny about it.

That said, I have no problem with MS hiring people that aren't "family friendly", but there should def be boundaries.

I feel his point about Microsoft is promptly going to be drowned out by all the abuse he's going to get for calling this person out in his video. Which is daft really. Gaming industry as a whole could do with out the KSI's, Pewdiepie and TotalBiscuits and could do with more Matt Lees and Boogie2988's. But generally likeable and well rounded people don't get page hits.

KSI is massive in the FIFA community, if he makes a video about a player on FIFA Ultimate team then that can raise that players price substantially. That reflects the influence he has, but EA and MS should avoid him since it appears they condone his behaviour and views.

You can see a few example of the "KSI Army" in action in the comments section of the article. Following publication, I received grammatically incorrect hateful tweets from them for about two weeks.

Having both consoles doesn't give you the right to treat women like shit. There's nothing funny about what was on display in this video.

It's a well reasoned argument. I don't know anything about this KSI guy and I don't think any amount of offensive material would bother me, but it's probably a bad idea for these big corporations to align themselves with that kind of message.

Individuals such as KSI are why gaming is still seen as a childish pasttime - they personify everything wrong with gaming as a hobby.

Well done to Lees for another well-reasoned video.

Very coherent and articulated, watched all of it. Yup, I agree, Microsoft fucked up here, and they should know much better than this.

His videos aren't "whiny"; he makes good points about this topic. Whether you like KSI or not, how he acted to women at the EG Expo was fucking shameful.

8 minutes of salt

You didn't even watch the video, did you?

KSI's target audience is 13 year olds who play FIFA.

Microsoft's target audience is 13 year olds who play FIFA.

You clearly didn't watch the video or see ANY of Microsoft's marketing on the One. Their target audience in the family.

And, I have to say, that was a great video. I've often championed media literacy education - we now live in a world where we perpetually consume media and most people are given the tools on how to interpret the messages they're being bombarded with or how to critically analyze them.

Fuck me when he asked that girl where her boobs had gone. Deserves a smack in the face.

Definitely agree.

Seems like KSI is just going for shock humour, completely failing and just being a complete prick to people. There's really no need for it.
