Vocal critic of net neutrality, Ajit Pai, set to become new FCC Chairman

Everything is so fucked. All through our schooling we learned about "checks and balances" and how our government is built in a way to prevent overreach. But then one stupid racist misogynistic orange fuck gets elected and literally everything we built towards for the past 8 years comes crumbling down. Net neutrality, healthcare, climate change, women's rights, LGBT rights, all of it... And with the GOP in control of everything, four years is going to be more than enough time to reverse absolutely everything.

Stupid fucking motherfucking stupid shitty system.

Sorry, I'm quite obviously pissed today.

I just ventured out to see the opinions of this from his supporters. The only thing I could find were people basically saying, "Wheeler was going to do it too, but he didn't, this isn't going to be a priority and we won't be talking about it again."

Should be an interesting four years.

Edit: Also seeing the "all regulation is bad" crowd out in force.

The internet trump brigade is about to eat itself.

Good work dipshits.

Silicon Valley's going to fight this just like they fought SOPA and the old net neutrality proposal, though, so it's only a subsection of corporate America that will fight for this (namely, Comcast, AT&T, Time Warner, and Verizon. Even content providers are going to be leery because they'll be beholden to ISPs).
Agreed. Surprised some folks are painting Silicon Valley as rubbing their hands in anticipation over this after the protests that were orchestrated over SOPA/PIPA. The question is how many more times can the public muster that kind of headline grabbing opposition if the government rams it down our throats, but the big players on the internet will be an ally in the fight.

Fight money with money.

If ISPs are bribing these folks, everybody else will just have to do the same. Start a kickstarter or GoFundMe for Net Neutrality. Or something along those lines.

John Oliver is gonna have to make another passionate speech.

relating to a modified form of liberalism tending to favor free-market capitalism.

I was referring to the problem of private commodification that negatively impacts public wellbeing. Of course this overlaps with conservative market cultish fallacies.

Your argument fails the provided definition since Pai is opposed to any kind of modern liberalism. Its like saying that we're typing in Chinese because it 'overlaps' with English as a language.

Isn't it weird how you get some suddenly vocal Trump supporters showing their true colors in the inauguration thread but none of them have anything to say in threads like these?

Couldn't Google, Facebook, Twitter, and Wiki all go black for a day as a protest? It doesn't benefit them to have tiered service

Good fucking job making the internet into the next cable tv, you evil Republican fucks.

Easier to inject fake news into and ensure divide and conquer reflexive control tactics work, all while massively profiting and consolidating wealth and power even further.

I hope someone out there is working on a protocol for the next "Internet" that cannot be usurped by the pipe providers... I just don't get the level of greed these fuckers have. They get paid for the service, but they want more because their old system is dying. Instead of innovating, they're legislating their way to the bank.

anybody think this could, in some backwards way (because nothing makes sense anymore) accelerate the decline of cable TV? internet costs go up, consumers are forced to choose between hobbled internet and TV, or faster internet and no TV. even my Fox News watching Republican parents use Netflix, Youtube, and data-chugging apps on their phones pretty regularly.

i feel most people would opt to drop their TV service to offset increased costs on their internet service.

Theyll do the opposite without anyone regulating them. Hobbled stand alone internet thats slower and cost more than bundled tv+internet with unlimited data limits to their in house services and partnerships. Look at ATT with their unlimited streaming from DirecTV Now plan or Verizon and their unlimited streaming from stuff like NBA pass when purchased through their Go90 service. They don't mind you streaming all day as long as it's their service and partnerships so they're able to collect ad dollars.

It's crazy to think so many people were against this for so long and now a portion of those people are helping campaign for the man, pretty much guaranteeing what's to come regarding net neutrality.

The one important factor in all this at least is that Silicon Valley is an extremely powerful, rich force that would oppose such changes. The ability for google and other tech giants to fight this will be critical.

If i am not mistaken, I recall Google placing protest on the main page regarding net neutrality a few years ago.

Unfortunately while the Lobbying efforts of these firms have stepped up because of the W admin, they still don't buy politicians to the degree that the likes of Comcast do.

Seeing so many Trump supporters on Gaf today, how do they defend this shit?

You think they have coherent thought beyond "go team"? That's proven the entire time any kind of policy topic happens... It's not a coincidence his supporters are only in a cheerleading thread

Trump is the most non-populist populist I've ever seen. We Americans can't even get that right.

Bernie was much more in line with the populist tag as he was actually offering shit to the poors.

4chan/Reddit don't give a fuck. Their brand of hatred is now easily acceptable and normalized as the new center of politics in the real world, so they don't need to hide behind keyboards anymore. Besides, with how useful they've been as recruitment tools, those sites will almost certainly be Tier 1 once ISPs start carving this shit up.

The big hitters like Netflix and Google need to step up. The only time consumer interests are heard are when those interests align with corporate interests.

Netflix released a statement a week or so ago. I can see them going on a blackout or something. Chances are Reddit and Google will do one. Hopefully twiiter does it too.

Unfortunately that's what they need to do, your normal consumer doesn't give a shit about their rights until it affects their day to day.

Is that a challenge? Because we absolutely will.

Were you not aware of the massive marches that took place not only in America, but around the world last weekend?

Yes this is exactly what will happen. Time for John Oliver to make another speech.

They will and thank god. Let them make noise. This is so disgustingly anti-consumer and it's comical that the FCC is trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes.

Only reason why I am not to worried. The big sites will go dark like last time.
