The alien design sucked in both, and I liked both movies.

Why do movies constantly fuck up the most basic element of an alien/monster movie.
Alien did it right. The Relic did it right, and what The Thing? thats about it.

I saw War tonight. Thought it was decent (more thoughts maybe if warranted in the WOTW thread).

But for me it boils down to this:

WOTW = Story about alien invasion framed around a family.
Signs = Story about a family framed around an alien invasion.

I thought signs had better alien design. The scene with the reflection in the tv freaked me out, aswell as the scene at the childs birthday party.

another thing signs did better was the way it built up. war of the worlds, and i havent read the book, felt like it just happened so quickly. signs had this slow build up which IMO was perfect.

Its got human muscle structure, and a human "skull nose" whats so tight about that? It would have been cooler if it looked like them, and only hinted at its true form to go along with the shapeshifting thing (I know they didn't actually shapeshift in the movie)

Close encounters stilt alien was more menecing

I'll give you Alien and the Thing....but for one, The Relic wasn't an alien, just a monster that used to be a man. And after a completely awesome book, they served us up a heaping of dung for a movie. Well, I suppose if you never read the book it was ok. But man, they pretty much butchered it.

I did preface it as monster/alien.. and the movie Relic sucked shit, but the creature was still cool. imo

Interesting point. What about The Mothman Prophecies?

Damn right, Signs was was an amaturish movie to most non-catholics.

Just wanted to point out how narrow minded and easily dissmissable this makes your point of view. Thanks for giving me the heads up.

Signs >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> War of the Worlds

I'm a big fan of M. Knight. I think it is a shame so many people seem to want to hate him because he likes making certain movies. I love his movies, and hope he doesn't stop trying to make these excellent movies.

War of the Worlds was ok. I like Tom Cruise, and Spielber is ok. The movie was just not very memorable. At least Signs had a shock cool ending even if your anti- M Knight endings.

Whew! I'm not the only one who liked both for what they were.

I wouldn't class either as great Sci-Fi movies...or even thrillers. They do a lot of things well, but are obviously weak in others.

People complain about Shymalan's (sp?) characters...while I found the ones in Signs far more interesting than the ones in WotW.

The way I saw it, it seemed as if Speilsberg was influenced by Shyamalan's simple approach to characters.

The son should have died...that in itself shows how his recklessness got him dead. Disobey your dad, you're dead!

WotW didn't really have any message at the end...Signs (like the Outer Limits) had a great message.

Sure, there weren't any tense scenes in WotW, but in the beginning when the Aliens started vapourizing people (I LOVE how they did this, because the laser looked kinda like a homage to old sci-fi, and the effect on the people...was a lot more modern-ish looking) was WELL-WICKED.

Signs was pretty good, up until the last 20 minutes, with the water and the unbelievably fucking facile theology. I hate Signs' ending. I HATE IT HATE IT HATE IT HATE IT HATE IT. And every time I think about it, I hate it more and more.

So, anyway, WotW>>>Signs.
