Warhammer 40,000 |OT| In the Grim Darkness of the Community Forum There Is Only War

Gulliman should be the only Loyalist primarch. His characterization has been great and I hope it continues. Dark Imperium is well worth a read.

Primarchs coming back shouldn't become expected or the norm, but it seems some people want that to happen, unfortunately. Bringing back more of them would really lower just how big a thing him coming back is in the first place is in the lore and even outside of it. Just the idea of a Primarch returning to the setting (and it being the one most 'qualified') was something totally unheard of that has changed the foundations of the setting in some ways, to suddenly have a few more appear would cheapen the whole event. Turning Loyalist Primarchs into just more standard characters that are part of the setting would really be a bad move, even more so if it's one that retcons something, like Sanguinius not being dead.

Sanguinius should definitely stay dead, but they could bring back others to add more conflict. Not having everybody on the same page can be fun!

If sanguinis came back that would ruin most of the cool lore about Blood Angels.

What happens to black rage if he comes back??

I put my old Word Bearers Dark Apostle from the previous starter next to my Plague Marines.

Chaos Marines are tiny by comparison. :/

If I spent that much money, you can be damn sure I'm playing with him as my "mini" in 40k. Just plop him on the table and take up a corner.

He's larger than a Warlord Titan. Like 11" taller. Though I suppose at that point the size doesn't really matter, it's not like you're going to get LOS issues.

Was just about to mention that. For scenery I think it's a better choice than etched brass. I've got my own method of modeling overgrowth but this could be a nice addition to that. I'll have to see more examples.

Just played my 3rd game ever, and it was kind of a bummer...

2v2 game. I've played with the same ally each time. And one of my opponents tonight I have faced 3 times. I played with a Baneblade, Stormraven, and Knight and 3 Inceptors. My teammate played with 2 Baneblades, a Deathstrike launcher thing, and I can't remember what else. My ally and I went first, and we tore into them our first round...a lot. They conceded at the end of our second round. Now here is what makes me grumpy...The guy I have played against 3 times, who is a friend, went into a speech at the end of game. It wasn't super negative, but still a little huffy about how, in the future if we are going to keep playing lists like that, we need to give a head's up and blah blah blah. Why it left a negative impact on me is that the first time we played, I said "I am going to be really easy to play against/plan against. I will always play with what I think is cool, and nothing else. So you will always see my Knight." I also showed this guy, at least 3 times, a picture of my Baneblade as I was working on it. Hell....he knows that I hate managing lots of units, so I play with big units to get around it. So I don't know. I am trying to see from his perspective, but it just rubbed me wrong and made me lose drive to play again for a good while just with how grumpy he was about me playing with units I like. I know it sucks to lose, and he has lost all 3 games now, but still....I am brand new. Nothing I've played with has been a surprise because I always ask if what I am using is legit, and did so tonight as well. Always was told yeah, you're good to go.

Rant over. Sorry to go on...just bugged me.

Are you guys playing with points or power level?

I'd personally never agree to play a small game with 3 baneblades and a knight in it. Sounds like a complete waste to be honest.

1500 point armies each player. What confused me is that my opponent brought 0 meltaguns, and he has tons of options for it. And he had so much knowledge ahead of time what was coming...If he would've rejiggered, he could have done all right. He rushed my baneblade with terminators and destroyed it, so I got scrapped decently. Knight was on it's way down too.

I feel a little better about him if you wouldn't have agreed to fight. Though...he kind of did. Though maybe he is too nice to say otherwise.

Not sure if this is important, but our opponents have been playing for years and have about a bajillion dollars worth of army units also. They can pretty much scrap together any kind of army comp to deal with us, including heavy of their own.

Well, your opponent is at fault for not maximizing his anti-tank ahead of time, but he also probably brought his army to come play a balanced game. Just because you can take a lot of super heavy units in a small game doesn't mean you should, and it will really hurt your ability to learn the game IMO. It's ok to like certain units (knights are sweet) but it's still game that calls for balance. It's a sportsmanship thing, essentially. You're welcome to only play heavy lists like that but if you frequent the same group, I bet you'll start to run out of people that agree to play you.

I would personally try to build a much more rounded force and ask for an objective based rematch with the guy, making it a point to say how'd you would like to learn. But that's me. You do you.

Thanks for response. It is much appreciated. Out of curiosity, how many points is considered a small game? What is normal for people to play?

1000-1500 is a regular sized game to me. 2000+ is where you start seeing large vehicles and big units, but not 4 in the same game. Your "Normal" is going to be dictated by table size, terrain availability, and how much time your group has.

If you want to learn the game even more, youtube is a great resource. There's the MiniWarGaming channel, which is great. I also just finished watching a 4,000 point game with nothing super heavy in it which was entertaining. For me, objective based games are a lot more fun than straightforward elimination. That's where the "chess with guns" aspects of 40k really shine. Ask someone to play missions that incorporate taking/holding objectives and drawing cards sometime.

War Peaceman

You're a big guy.

1000 or less is a small game. 1000-2000 medium and over 2000 large. Personally I think super heavies like Baneblades or Titans don't fit into lower points games in a particularly engaging way. But I'd encourage you to speak with your opponent and try to find what they prefer so you both have an enjoyable time in the future.

Just noticed you edited your post and added this after I had already responded..

He was being polite by reminding you that your list has to be fun for both players and not just yourself. I realize there's a temptation to put down a lot of sweet units that are 'easy' to manage, but you really won't learn the ins and outs of the game with T8 24+ wound units as a crutch. You are really new to the game, so you may not know this, but the list you ran wouldn't be allowed in previous editions. To underscore how cheeky your list was; in previous editions, Baneblades counted as Lords of War, and you had to ask your opponent permission to use them in most cases.

For the same points as one Baneblade, you can get 3 Leman Russ tanks or thereabouts, and I think that's a much better investment points wise. That's 36 wounds worth of T8 tanks that can do different things in terms of objectives. It's also more fluffy and appropriate, and you'll catch less shade for it.

Guard (astra militarum) are a good army to learn the game with, so if you really dig the Baneblade, build out a full roster of them.

More like half as much, if that.

I feel like people focus way too much on fluff for fun rather than experimentation. Leave fluff for narrative experiences folks. It's annoying when someone get a mad at me in open play for a non fluff list. Especially when it's nothing broken
Small rant... Just from recent experiences

I've never been into the lore outside of what you find in codexes and rule books, but fell down a wiki hole last night reading about The Beast. Holy hell I need to read up about that.

It's a bit Nickelodeon, yeah, but I don't mind it.

But I mean, like, it's the odd confluence of ideas that makes the setting so fun. Something like Rogue Traders, for example, it makes sense that they'd exist, but how many settings would implement that huge tonal shift within themselves? And the setting is full of those kinds of tonal shifts.

And then there's the little things that people who don't bother with the lore forget about, like you can write a novel where Space Marines are the kind of cultured snooty people who raise their pinky fingers while drinking tea, because that's what they are. Would something like, say, Gears of War, do something that ridiculous with their beefy marine characters? Probably not.

I'm too sleepy to be explaining this well, but you guys get what I mean, right? It's all the things like that that make it feel like a unique setting, it's beyond what a normal grimdark or edgy series strives for.

I've never associated Nurgle with snails, always flies, but maybe a giant fly wasn't the best call here. The model isn't bad, but the eyes don't look good. Maybe if they were smoothed over to look more like feelers instead.

Snails can be good or bad for gardens and I would think Nurgle's Garden is no different.

I expect Russ to be one of the final primarchs to come out, I dont expect him until 2021-22.

Vulkan is a perpetual and probably the most difficult perpetual to kill being a primarch, so I expect him back, possibly leading the Dark imperium or assisting the Tau, as he was disgusted by what the imperium devolved into just 2k years after the horus heresey.

Vulkan loves humanity, so I can see him somewhat liking hte greater good

I really, really don't know why people are expecting or wanting more Primarchs to come back in the first place. Part of the whole reason they aren't in the setting already is that it adds a bit of mystery to the fate of these heroic legendary figures, leaving the Imperium as a dark, hopeless place where the real heroes of the setting as pretty ordinary characters in comparison. More Primarches returning just takes away from the setting, and lowers the status of the characters by turning them into just more standard parts of it that are commonplace.

I can perfectly understand wanting to see how they'd react to the state of things, but i don't think that's worth it. It would be like actually saying what happened to two Lost Legions outright, it just defeats the point of having that in the first place and you just end up trading an interesting mystery you can hint at and build up over time, for a temporary cool thing that'll loose its appeal and become the norm shortly after. They're kept out of the setting to add some intrigue to it.

Painting app coming: https://www.warhammer-community.com/2017/08/21/coming-soon-the-citadel-paint-system-in-your-pocket/

Could be useful, but where in the Emperor's name is the 40K app?!

I'm looking forward to this painting app! It sounds like It might be a repository for recipies for how to paint specific things in specific styles.

I have a feeling the 40k app won't come out until all the codex's are out.

Because GW likes money.

I agree, but I do like the idea of 1 more coming back, hating what he sees and leading a force that's at odds with the Imperium but isn't corrupted by Chaos.

While I agree with you, It's been stated that most Deamon primarchs are coming back, and most loyalists are aswell, from well known and correct rumormongers such as hastings.

THere was an additional rumor that some primarchs might comeback (even the dead ones somehow) and be allied with an non imperial/chaos faction, in addition that a chaos and loyal primarch would flip loyalties.

GW will Drip feed these primarchs out, Magnus, Robote, mort, Fulgrim, and so on.
