Watch_Dogs downgradeaton confirmed

No way I'm going to judge the visuals off a low quality gif. It would appear to be as ugly as a PS3/360 game (and I doubt it will be), but inferior visual packages is the nature of cross gen development so it wouldn't surprise me. End that shit developers, stunting the growth of your titles.

I seriously hope we are at the very worst, seeing either Last Gen textures or DDR3/Esram textures, I would have liked to say, to target 60fps, but 30fps??

Game will crash hard if this is NextGEN, esp PS4.

What the fuck are DDR3/Esram textures? Textures aren't the problem, and won't be for the X1.

Next gen can't handle it

This line is so full of shit, I really can't believe people think this way. The E3 2012 reveal wasn't even a game, it never existed. Parroting this line doesn't make it true

On a positive note, I'm excited for Arkham Knight since they dropped the cross-gen shackles and are being made by a smaller studio who knows what they are doing and not some huge mess of studios across the world.

Very good thread, subscribed!

Good gifs, good meltdowns, ugly screenshots! 9/10
Can't say I'm shocked, but I'm not hyped for Watch_Dogs either.

Has this been confirmed to be PS4 footage? it looks like PS3 footage. Hopefully someone from Ubisoft can shed some light on the graphics.

Something isn't right here, WatchDogs doesn't seem to look that great (if that footage is really PS4/X1) & Thief 4 doesn't seem to be all it was supposed to be, could this just be a cross-gen issue ?

I know many were saying that the graphical jump wasn't going to be a big from the PS3/X360 to the PS4/X1 as it was from the PS2/Xbox as it was to the X360/PS3 but really this small a difference ?

Every time this game gets mentioned my interest declines further.

Was hyped for months, and then footage started to come out and it was clear that the game had been downgraded for all platforms.

Then it got delayed.

I think the game was best positioned for success at the launch of PS4/XB1. I don't think it's going to do anywhere near as well now.

looks like sleeping dogs. but drier...
i cant believe this is ps4. if thats seriously the case these cross gen games need to stop sooner than later.

That is the only part that looks that bad in the whole 4 minute video, otherwise the game looks pretty good. It was definitely downgraded, but it's not as horrible as that gif makes it look.

They confirmed on twitter, it is PS4 footage.

I think when the game comes out, a lot of this fussing will be over nothing - it won't look like the initial reveal, but it won't look like this either on average. It'll be a game hampered by cross gen necessity, and we already know what exclusive open world games look like on PS4. The wild card is the dumb cross gen development.

Still, there's no way the game is going to look like that on PS4 or XBO from the moment to moment. It looks like a combination of really bad aspects all converging unfortunately in one gif, amplifying its worse visual aspects. And I say this as someone not wildly excited about Watch Dogs. It's just a lot of overreaction.

Did anyone not even watch the whole video on the site that this awful gif is taken from?

It's clearly been cherry picked from 90% decent looking PS4 footage to kick off more stupid downgrade arguments. I'm pretty sure there is current gen footage mixed in there, Look at 2.28 in the video. It looks considerably worse than everything else. That is very likely the PS360 footage, and probably so is the section where the gif is from, because the rest of the car footage looked totally fine. I have no idea why this guy has a mix of videos, but it's unmistakable, OP should of posted the actual website link, because this thread is totally ridiculous and nobody even bothers to check for themselves and decide to rely on a crappy gif as the consensus for judgement.

90% of the B-roll is story cutscenes. Most likely rendered better ala Uncharted / TLoU.

All the gameplay, from a gameplay perspective in the B-Roll so far looks... underwhelming graphically.

but if you've seen something I haven't, please cap and post!

It does look downgraded though. Especially in the gif scene. But the worst part of the video you shared is that the lighting has changed. Everything in previous videos looked like the lighting wasn't pre-baked on to all objects in the world. Now, the lighting looks pre-baked and makes the game look last gen due to this lighting change.

Same video. Looks totally fine to me. All dynamic shadows from those streetlamps.

but if you've seen something I haven't, please cap and post!
Boop:

Edit: I ain't the best at capturing gifs, but it'll do.

This was once one of my most anticipated games. Now I'll grab it during a Steam sale at a major discount. Game looks terrible now.

The graphics look so poor I get the impression this is a mixture of team inadequacy + weaker hardware.

I'm seriously considering cancelling my Limited Edition (paid in full) pre order. The more I see of Watch Dogs, the more it's looking like a "Meh" game..

Yeah, I don't know why people keep thinking this is PS4 footage. There is NO WAY this is PS4 footage. This looks like a PS3 game.

There was an official sony tweet after someone asked, it's PS4.

Ubisoft on why its got a downgrade and whats happening -

"So it's the same storyline," he said. "It's done by the same team, so it's not a separate team in another continent that was (making one of the versions). So, same storyline, same gameplay, all the same mechanics, innovations. All the same missions, if you want, the same world.

"Obviously what's different, is that we're scaling the dynamism and the detail of the city and the gameplay. So it's stuff like the amount of civilians in the street, the amount of cars in the street, the detail in the animation, or how sophisticated some reactions are to some of your actions. So some of those things are scaled down. Obviously the graphics, but that one's obvious."

Guay said he's very happy with what the team has been able to do on the PS3 and Xbox 360, especially in the past six months.

"There were some of our features where it was a challenge to be sure that we had feature parity, especially some of the things that we're doing online," he said. "But at the end of the day we're able to hit that on all the core animations that we're doing in Watch Dogs."

In terms of PlayStation 4 versus Xbox One versions of the game, Guay says they're so similar that he sometimes has to check the controller or the UI to figure out which platform is running the game.

"It pretty much looks alike," he said. "You know, I get fooled. You can't really tell just from the image."

And the PC version scales based on the sort of computer you're running it on, though the team made the decision "not too scale down too much," Guay said.

"I mean you can always say we support a 10-year-old PC and then it's barely playable, but that's ugly," he said. "It's not really what people want to play. We didn't do that. We didn't go there. We said, ‘OK, we advertise that at the recommended setting it's going to be a good experience. It's going to look good, it's not going to look like a 10-year-old game.' So we're not going to support very old PCs. If you have very powerful PCs, then it'll scale up, and it scale up to even higher resolution, obviously, than you can have on PS4 or Xbox One. So you can have, in theory, a version that will look spectacular if you have that big screen, that high resolution capability. The game looks great on PC."

One of the reasons that's true is because development on Watch Dogs actually started for the PC first.

"When we started developing, the PS3 existed, the Xbox 360 existed, and we kind of suspected, maybe, there might be other platforms eventually," he said. "So, because we thought that would happen we chose the PC as our first target to have when we started developing Watch Dogs so that we have the flexibility to adapt to a different platform. So we were able to support 360 and PS3, but we could scale up with other platforms and to other video in the meantime, which we now know is the case. So PC has always been around for us. Sometimes it's a last-minute port of sorts. For us, it's been around since we started."

Development shifted to the next-gen consoles once the PS4 and Xbox One were announced, and then in the last eight months or so a dedicated team returned to the PC to hammer out the final details of that platform's version of the game, he said.

"So we end up having the best of both worlds basically," he said. "We're able to have good usability on PC and on console."

If that is the PS4 version, I dread to think what the last-gen versions would be like. Ubisoft's delay has now caused more harm than good. I won't be surprised if this game gets mediocre scores all around.

The game had a very interesting and surprising debut nearly two years ago, but everything since has been lackluster.

I'm with you, the first thing I did is look at the video. It really doesn't look as bad as people are saying as an actual video. I do find that the way the bridge blinks to indicate it's being hacked looks pretty awful, but the rest of it really doesn't look that bad. Come on guys, as a crossgen game you should have expected this wouldn't look as good as Second Son. There was also no way it was going to look identical to the reveal. This stuff is par for the course. It shouldn't be, but it is. Anyone else remember the whole Killzone debacle?

Also, this isn't the first time this has happened early in a new gen, either. Compare early PS2 stuff with late gen PS2 stuff. Compare early 360 games like Perfect Dark Zero to later stuff like Halo 4. You can't expect devs to push the envelope having never shipped a product on this new gen before. Just watch, by 2020, we're going to look at stuff like SS and think it looks dated compared to whatever will be out at the time.
