Watch_Dogs downgradeaton confirmed

"Obviously what's different, is that we're scaling the dynamism and the detail of the city and the gameplay. So it's stuff like the amount of civilians in the street, the amount of cars in the street, the detail in the animation, or how sophisticated some reactions are to some of your actions. So some of those things are scaled down. Obviously the graphics, but that one's obvious."

Holy hell, talk about a downgrade!!! It's not just the graphics, it's EVERYTHING!!! Forget this game. Hype completely gone.

This line is so full of shit, I really can't believe people think this way. The E3 2012 reveal wasn't even a game, it never existed. Parroting this line doesn't make it true.
Where are you getting this information? Looks like the game to me. Just with better graphics. I'm sure it was the game. Having much better graphics then doesn't mean it wasn't the game. What do you think it was?

There's no way that can be what they actually plan to sell under the moniker of watchdogs....the trailers and other gameplay just liked amazing and Ubisoft isn't that ******. I don't know but I feel like I'm going to be taking that screencap with a grain of salt. I feel like they will still release what we saw.

People always claim the first next gen reveals aren't impressive and then the actual games come out and they can't even match them for the entire gen.

Watch Dogs
Unreal Tournament 3
Madden and Need for Speed
Dark Sector
Motorstorm

etc.

This reminds me a lot of the Bioshock Infinite reveal trailer. That game looked so awesome and dripping with atmosphere. The release was such a shadow of a game :(

This is like Aliens: CM all over again, sigh.

From showing an awesome dynamic lighting/shadows/debris that gave the game an atmosphere and set it up so nicely, to showing flat baked lighting and downgraded textures/detail.

I'm with you, the first thing I did is look at the video. It really doesn't look as bad as people are saying as an actual video. I do find that the way the bridge blinks to indicate it's being hacked looks pretty awful, but the rest of it really doesn't look that bad.

Yeah the bridge blinking looks awful and I think it's totally throwing people off in regards to the lighting in that 'comparison'.

Edit: I posted this gif on the previous page from the same website's video. Around the 1.35 mark. It honestly looks fine to me

So after all this disapointments we can say that PS4/ONE are really the CrossGen.

Wait for Luminous Engine downgrade. Never forget that FF XV is a CrossGen game too.

I think most of us did expect a downgrade but this is a generational type of downgrade, massive.
Yea... I was defending Ubisoft in the other thread, because some posters really came off as vultures, but holy shit. I don't think I've ever seen a downgrade this massive. The fact that so many people are genuinely confused about which versions the gif is comparing is crazy.

But how?! I just don't get it. There are PS3 games that look better than this! How can a PS4 game look this bad? It just doesn't add up. I'm flabbergasted!

I don't know why people are spewing out these hyperboles. I think some people are confused and think the footage in the clip is normal lighting at night and dont realize that there is a spotlight from a helicopter being shined on the car? Maybe they think that the darkness in the distance is fog/draw distance or something?

Same video. Looks totally fine to me. All dynamic shadows from those streetlamps.

Wow. That looks good.

True. But Bioshock Infinite still turned out to be a very good game. I still have faith that this will too. Too bad about losing all that yummy eye candy, though.

I don't know why people are spewing out these hyperboles. .

One man's hyperbole is another man's perfectly reasonable and legitimate comment.

I wouldn't concern yourself too much. I've seen this many times in game communities - an anticipated game gets a specifically bad trailer or a couple of bad screenshots and people think it's indicative of some horrific downgrade. Most of the time it's never that, most of the time it's simply a selection of awful screens or a really badly cut trailer that highlights some of the weaker aspects of the engine.

One thing I like to remember is that even if the most beautiful game on any platform, you can find a plethora of bad textures or a specific ugly area or some sort of pop up or some other unappealing visual aspects. It happens in everything from the worst looking games, to some of the most spectacular on consoles like Uncharted 2 or 3.

I actually had a thread I was making coincidentally that was called "Capture the WORST screenshots of the most gorgeous games you can!":

Thread-I'm-Working-On said:
There's lots of threads devoted to the art of taking amazing in-game photos, and I love them. But I thought it'd be an interesting experiment to try the opposite: find a game that most people agree is beautiful, and try to find the ugliest moment you can and snap it.

Rules:

1. It'd be kind of unfair if we just opened up the latest PC game and turned everything to the lowest settings, so don't do that. Post games at 720p-1080p or higher PC shots, and at least "high" settings where applicable.

2. Make sure the shots are your own. Where possible, capture them on PS4 or XB1 or Wii U (or Vita, PS3, etc) using the in-system photo capture tools. Off-tv shots are OK only if you have no other way to capture a shot for whatever reason. Don't just go on a website and find some examples of old build photos from games and show them :)

3. This is for fun, we're not out to prove any points here (other than perhaps that every game has ugly moments), so let's not use it to front our console agendas. So don't just show a game most people think is already not a stunner and then use it to, say, suggest a console's technical prowess (or lack thereof).

4. For the sake of consistency, let's also try avoiding shots of games where they glitch out or showcase a bug (like say all face textures disappearing or something). Since that's not actually a regular part of the game's presentation, it'd be pointless for this topic.

The idea of the thread was to do a sort of opposite of the amazing great screenshot threads on GAF, to counter program people to understand that by the nature of game development in creating whole worlds, there will always be aspects that look ugly in some way. It's almost impossible to make every last blade of grass and texture appealing with the budgets we have now, or the time.

Though I still think it looks good, it has clearly been downgraded. The writing was on the wall, though. Don't know why people are acting surprised. it is not like it is the first time Ubisoft does this and it will probably not be the last one. Not to mention Ubisoft is not alone in this. Everyone remembers PS3 reveal with Killzone and Motorstorm. Recently same thing happened with Deep Down
grade
from Capcom. Uncharted 3 went through something similar, though some people argue it was only a change on the style or art direction. And these are only from the top of my mind. Certainly there are more examples out there.

So it is not an isolated incident. And this is a practice I really wish companies would receive some massive backslashes for. Which doesn't seem to happen.

Ok, this looks a full generation better than the gif in the OP. Thank god (But it's not gonna stop this single gif from being reposted for the entire generation in regards to Ubisoft downgrades). Does anyone have a different link to the footage? The one link getting posted around wont play on my browser.
So after all this disapointments we can say that PS4/ONE are really the CrossGen.

Everything in this post is factually incorrect.

No it's not.

They scrapped PS3 version a long time ago and have focused entirely on PS4/X1. We might see some hold over, but for the most part it is a new gen title.

The new slow-mo effect is really pathetic. Though I could see them removing the old for the reason that you couldn't see shit

The old one is bloom bleed city. It looks terrible.

Anyway, I remain cautiously optimistic for this, will have to wait to see the game out in the wild before I put my money down.

Hey, that doesn't look bad!

sorry but why do people bring up my tweets (the one saying its ps4 footage ) in regards to that gif.? that tweet was for the story trailer earlier today, not the italian footage where the gif is from. so unless someone else confirmed the italian footage to be ps4 footage, then this is not confirmed .

That sounds like a fun idea for a thread. I'd be interested in seeing the results.

"When we started developing, the PS3 existed, the Xbox 360 existed, and we kind of suspected, maybe, there might be other platforms eventually," he said.

No shit it ended up this way. They didn't even know PS4 and X1 specs. They admit it was nothing more than a tech demo.

Lower bandwidth required textures? Textures look an issue to me in some of the screen shots. (Also a general downgrade)

Texture bandwidth requirement is predictable and not huge, generally not a limiting factor (especially at 30fps). DDR3 is fast enough with how it's used. It's a lot faster than the system RAM in my PC. We won't see many texture downgrades, just resolution/effects. It's managing the eSRAM that's awkward on X1, and the weaker GPU.

exactly this. look at the wind and dust in the original footage and how much depth and atmosphere it brings to the scene. compared to the 2014 footage that has none of that.

I mean, look at this:

noatmospheremgjqa.png

It genuinely looks like someone forgot to build the lighting in the engine before they recorded the clips..

Please start over from the beginning, assuming not everyone knows which tweets you're talking about and exactly what you said in them.

Why do people keep saying the writing was on the wall and a "downgrade" was expected?

This was MEANT to be a next-gen game, ps4/xbone/pc.

Have you seen InFamous Second Son? Even Assassin's Creed IV on the pc looks better then the pics coming out of Watch dogs now.

I don't think anyone expected a downgrade like this.

I mean there's no reason it couldn't look like it did in the earlier trailers, it wasabout on par with INfamous in regards to the fidelity and details, so I don't see why some people are saying it had to be downgraded or that it was inevitable.

The delay actually excited me, unlike most people. I thought it would ensure the finished Watch_Dogs (at least on ps4) to be far closer to the reveal than it had strayed in subsequent showings, so I wanted to believe people were just being hyperbolic as well. Those hopes were quickly and assuredly dashed.

Edit:
Watch the whole video guys, the game doesn't look nearly as bad as that scene in the gif. I dunno what happened, but that looks terrible in comparison. The game is downgraded, but not that much.

http://www.everyeye.it/ps4/articoli/watch-dogs_hands-on_21862

I didn't judge it until I watched the whole video. I thought the gif was showing improvements. I think the whole thing looks worse than GTAV on PS3, albeit with improved QQ and density.

sorry i am on my vita (and this thread is killing it) . but on the first and second page of this thread people used my tweets to claim that the gif is confirmed to be from ps4. dennis was one of the people.

One man's hyperbole is another man's perfectly reasonable and legitimate comment.

Reasonable and legitimate? Please. There are people saying this looks horrible and worse than most Ps3 games after just looking at the gif in the OP and then overreacting in the comments.

The game still looks fine. Significant downgrade? Sure. Apocalyptic? No.
