Weight Loss Before/After Thread! (with pics)

I've kinda ramped up my low-carbism, but it's quite a challenge to keep the carbs down while simultaneously keeping fat/protein up.
It's going pretty decent so far though, so I'll keep it up for a couple of weeks until I've reached my target weight and then eat enough carbs to maintain my weight and stop weight loss.

Does anyone else sweat like a bastard while in keto?

I've always been a bit of a sweater, much like my father. But when I'm in ketosis, I sweat so profusely it gets embarrassing.

After doing a quick Google search, it appears they might be related. I was just wondering if any GAFers had experienced similar issues with sweating.

I would say that I'm sweating a little more sure. Nothing I really noticed until you mentioned it though. It's really only during exercise though. Even through this heat wave in NY, while not exercising, I've managed to stay cool and dry.

Why? Most great sources of fat/protein are free of carbs.

Jesus, so glad I got my mom on my fitness pal. And she wonders why her blood sugar is high.

Chex and granola bar for breakfast. Apples and oranges with her tuna for lunch. Skipping dinner, instead eating another granola bar and a cup of ice cream as a snack.

I'm taking her food shopping this weekend.

Tell her to switch the apples and oranges to strawberries. Looks like this is the first solid evidence that strawberries actively protect against disease, particularly heart disease and diabetes: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/07/120704124107.htm

Berries for the motherfucking win. Can never get enough of them.

I really wish Berries werent so expensive :(

I know that apples seem expensive, but I really feel like you get more bang for your buck since I think two apples basicall equal one regular container of blueberries or strawberries, which basically means that apples are twice as cheap

Dont get me started on bananas. Those things are just stupidly cheap

Any examples?
I've yet to encounter stuff that is free of carbs, it all contains some carbs that in the end get me quite close to the 50g limit.

Beef, chicken, pork, eggs, fish, cheese?

Are you cooking your own food or just buying processed pre-packaged stuff?

update after 6 weeks, doing 40 minutes cardio, lots of crunches and push-ups. No diet, yet I need to wait 3 weeks to get home and ask my personal doctor

I know neither the weight loss nor the workout is really worth a mention compared to some great achivementes in this thread but any word of encouragement is appreciated

crunches are not good for the spine. You should do planks instead

I'm a vegetarian, so the stuff I can eat are stuff I'm already eating.
I am cooking my own stuff, but do use processed stuff such as soy-burgers/hotdogs for some extra protein along with protein shakes.

planks is that exercise where you stay for a minute in a static position with your arms on the floor?? I'll try it next time, I am curious. Thanks!

but I've been doing crunches and they aren't bad for my body, they are bad if done wrong but that's with just about any exercise in existence.

Crunches are bad when you don't give your neck proper support. I've been doing them for years without any issues.

Planks are good, but I don't think my shoulders (or wrists for high planks) are strong enough. I always feel it more there than in my abs.

yeah, that's right, the first couple of times I'd feel my neck getting a bit sore but I am way past that now, I can feel using the gut muscles all the way through without extenuating any other muscles.

oh I avoid using my wrists as much as possible.

If you are a vegetarian for the health benefits, you should stop being a vegetarian. Obviously i am not going to tell you to stop if its for moral reasons

Yeah, it's for moral reasons so I won't start eating meat over just faster weight loss. I'm doing alright on the low carb front, netting less than 50g of carbs a day, but I kinda need more calories and proteins still.

I think we've had this conversation before :p

I do remember saying something similar to somebody. I couldnt remember who though, lol

But yea, I really dont have a whole lot of info on a keto/primal vegetarian diet since that really does not apply to me at all.

If you eat eggs, i would eat a shit ton of eggs

I think maybe you should ignore the arbitrary 50g carb limit, just eat whole foods and you should be good to go

Ok, so it seems regular tomato sauce (or ketchup as you Americans like to call it) is loaded with sugar and is probably something to avoid. However, I love the stuff and there are many meals I use it with.

Can anyone recommend some good, tasty, low-sugar tomato sauce brands? Preferably ones that I can buy in Australia?

Alright, I see a couple of things on that list that I don't really eat/eat enough of.
I'll see if I can eat some more eggs as well, I'll figure out something creative to do with them.

Thanks guys.

Oh lawd lol. I think I've been eating bigger portions of chicken than I thought :D Oops!

I don't have a scale so HOW MUCH is 4oz of chicken really? Hahaha.

At least it's only chicken and not sweets or something.

well, usually you buy skinless chicken breast like some amount per pound and there are usually 3 or 4 pieces in there. So next time you go to the store, it should be fairly easy to figure out.

4 oz of chicken doesnt seem like a whole lot though

That's fine, chicken is fat and protein, so your body will start feeling full when you really shouldn't be eating any more.

I need to find a purge station fast. I went to my grandmothers tonight and she makes so much carb heavy foods. blerg, I can't...

Feel like a bloated sack of crap, huh?

Its always a tough decision when my work puts out free pizza. I mean, i know its bad and it will make me feel bad, but its free...

Make up for it by doing a little bit of extra exercise, or make that your "cheat day".
But it is kinda tricky to maintain a low-carb lifestyle when there is carb offered everywhere.

Ice cream is my main enemy now that it's summer.

Try making your own froyo. It's amazingly good and you can control the amount of sugar you put in.

I basically ate an entire roasted chicken yesterday. No carbs or anything, but I'm definitely feeling it today.

Mmmmm. Chicken!

I ended up having some carbs. 2nd attempt at making a cake from scratch so I had to have some to test out the recipe. It was really good but still needs some tweaking. Not a big deal though, I'm pretty sure I either hit my calorie limit or was still under it. I am skipping my cheat meal this weekend though. I wanna get into the low 240's by the end of next week.

Just curious, what do most of your grocery lists look like. I'm trying to add more variety. I basically do primal, with safe starches like white rice, yams, potatoes and sweet potatoes to recover from training.

Here's mine. I'll break it down by meals.

Breakfast:
eggs
bacon
chicken sausage

Lunch:
I usually eat this out; mostly chicken or beef salads.

Dinner:
Chicken (Whole)
Grass feed stew meat
Pork chops

Spinach
Asparagus
Salad greens
Broccolli

Yams
Sweet Potatoes
Potatoes

Misc.
Full fat greek yogurt
Tuna
Butter
Condiments of all kinds

You're all amazing. I've been trying myself with some results. I've gone from size 34 in jeans to 31 in a couple of months. I don't think is that much myself but it feels good. Eating lots of fish and shellfish, and some vegetables daily.

Also walking 8 km almost every day. Which doesn't even feel hard, so I began to run the other day. Trying to run that whole distance. First time 3 km next time 4 km. How often do you guys think I should run? I'm thinking about not messing up knees and such.

I would worry less about the frequency and more about whether you're running with the right shoes. I know many big people (not necessarily overweight) who run daily.

Okay. I bought the shoes at a store where they film your feet in order to see what kind of shoes you need based on how you hit the ground. So I don't think it should a problem then. :)

Since I feel the past two months have been a wash cutting weight, I'm moving from 1700 a day to 1500. 180g of protein, 20g of carbs.

I can't recommend bare feet or Vibrams "toe shoes" when it comes to running. Feels so damn liberating to be out of traditional shoes, and there's a lot less chance of injury.

The injury thing isn't true. And if you're not used to being barefoot, well, it's easy to get tendinitis. But there's nothing inherently wrong with them (some people don't like the way they look).

What do you mean by "isn't true"?

By virtue of it simply being easier to run and easier to position your feet, injuries are reduced. For example, it's a hell of a lot easier to misstep and hurt your ankle in conventional shoes than it is with your bare feet.

Vibrams are so boss.

I had flat feet all my life and it made walking and running a nightmare. I got Vibrams last September and only use them for ~2hrs a week and I've already damn near eliminated it.

So fucking cool to see actual arcs on my feet now.

Walking is perfectly fine. I would actually not recommend jogging that. Just do an occasional full-blast sprint during your walk and youll be great

Also, lift weights

As in there's no scientific basis for those claims. Vibram's actually got on trouble for making similar claims in the form of a class action lawsuit.

I do see that the ACE and other doctors say that they're perfectly fine if used properly. But they also say they're not for everyone, and may even be detrimental to some.

Obviously, I can speak only for myself, but I know I have far more control while bare foot or when wearing Vibrams. It's a huge difference. You can feel the terrain and the slight differences in elevation, rocks, etc. and position your foot accordingly. Maybe I'm just clumsy when wearing normal tennis shoes, but I would frequently twist my ankle or otherwise hurt myself while hiking. No more of that with Vibrams or when going bare foot.

If you've been wearing raised heel, over padded runners all your life, swapping to running with 2 millimetre barefoot style soles could quite easily cause an injury.

I wasn't able to control my groceries for about a week or two due to living on my friend's couch and being dead broke after settling leases and moving out; but I think I'm going to be able to hop back on the wagon and get back into a good caloric deficit.

Chicken and broccoli here I come! :D

It's really been quite the opposite for me. I read a lot about needing to ease into it, but I really didn't need to. Maybe it just depends on the person?

Although I find it hard to believe that reverting to your natural state (barefoot or a close approximation) could cause any kind of harm in and of itself. Obviously you have to worry about stepping on sharp objects, but Vibrams offer enough protection.

So I tried hard-boiled eggs for breakfast all week and they are all right. A bit hard to prepare, and cold eggs are not the most appetizing thing in the morning. :p

Overall I'm still looking for that perfect, cheap, healthy work breakfast. May try the greek yogurt next week (plain + berries or something) even though it will be more expensive. I hope berries are enough to keep plain greek yogurt from tasting like sour cream.
