Weirdest gaming-related pronunciation you've heard?

I've been calling the Xbox One the XBO, pronounced "crossbow."

Hard mode: don't mention Metroid. Apparently people thought it was Phenandra Drifts on GAF a while back... it's Phendrana. Phendrana.

Planet Zebes.

I'm not even sure if I have it right but I refuse to change. I pronounce it "Zebz", but I'm generally okay with "Zeebz" too.

I just don't know what to think when I hear "Zeebeez."

I remember everyone on the Nsider forums pronouncing Phendrana Drifts incorrectly as well.

I of course, pronounced it the correct way and was called out on mispelling it.

Poke-e-man
People fail when they say Po-kuh-mon too.

It's Po-Kay-mon. Even if you're ignorant of the Japanese origin of the pocket monsters portmanteau, they put an accent on the E to spell it out for you.

Merio never heard that one before. Mary-o vs maury-o (proper italian pronunciation) debate before.
I meant Mary-o. I guess I was thinking in terms of romaji when I wrote it as Merio.

Merry-o always confuses me, Mario has always been just that to me, Mar-Rio. Super Merry-O Brothers sounds like a farce/copy cat Mario series.

Planet Zebes.

My only real experience hearing it "in canon" was from Brawl's edit of the Norfair theme, where it's pronounced "Zee-bus."

Protip for Pokemon: if you want to sound "right" without being a huge nerd for overemphasizing the accented "e," say "Polkamon" with a silent "L."

Laura for Lara Croft (it's Lar-uh)
Leh-ra for Lara Croft
Zid-ayne for Zidane (it's Zid-ann)
Mar-ee-oh for Mario (it's Ma-ree-oh, the same 'ma' sound as in the word 'man')
Tie-dus for Tidus (it's Tee-dus)

No mention of Douche Ex?

As for me, Hwoarang from Tekken used to be "Whore-or-rang" like a boomerang that really got around.

Planet Zebes.

I find it hard to change too... But apparently it is Zeebess according to Samus in Other M.

No mention of Douche Ex?
That's what Rihanna calls Chris Brown.

The American way of saying Mario, "Mery-Ohh"

Not all americans do this, but i am baffled that people still do this. Its not like its some hidden move in Street Fighter EX Turbo Fighter Edition Mega Special for the 3DO, its the most famous video game character in the world. Mario is right up there with Mickey Mouse etc.

Ubisoft.

It's YOO-be-soft. Not OO-be-soft.

It's short for Ubiquitous Software. Get it right, people! Game journalists are the worst with this.

It's pronounced "Zee-bess".

It kind of bothers me when people pronounce "Mario" with an "ar" sound, as in "car" or "bar". The "a" should be as in "apple". Listen to the Mario 64 intro: YouTube

Also, people who still say "Rye-oo". Thankfully they're few and far between now.

I'm not sure how it *should* be pronounced, but I generally pronounce Psygnosis as "Sig-nosis" and I've heard it pronounced as "Psigh-nosis". At least one of us is incorrect!

Maybe I have a different accent than either of you... But no, Mario should not be pronounced like the A in 'man' or the A in 'apple.'

Actually... It should rhyme with Car.

But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say that it could be like the "how do you say Mary, merry and marry?" distinction. I dont know exactly how you guys say car, apple or man. It's hard to discuss pronunciation in text.

If you know both the Italian name, and how the Japanese syllable is written, there is very little room for interpretation. Ma-ri-o.

When I played the original Everquest at launch, during a guild voicechat I heard someone pronounce paladin as "puh-LAY-din"

He wasn't trolling either, he really didn't know how to pronounce it. Everyone was laughing hard.

Not MOST Americans do this. Just the ones that happen to be idiots.
