What are some truly great science-fiction romances?

In Futurama, Fry and Leela pre-series revival was pretty great. When they were finally together post-series revival things it was treated pretty disappointingly though. The last great Fry/Leela romance story was in Bender's Big Score imo.

Oh man yeah.

He was like, "I came across time for you." lol. That's like the greatest hookup line you could drop on someone.

Farscape as has been noted has the easy response to this question. To throw something different out there: Masane and Takayama in the Witchblade anime.

I kind of like Adama and Roslin from BSG.

Eh, one of my least favorites in its execution, but then, I played the VN whereas so many others watched the anime. There always seems to be a disconnect between the perspective that provided me and how people who watched that condensed, abridged (and occasionally altered) version thought of it.

Two months later, and I'm STILL dwelling on how much I hated that true ending.

Why? I like it how established Okabe and Kurisu as firmly canon and Mayuri was strictly his friend. (Let's pretend Zero didn't happen.)

I really, really love the portrayal of Greg and Rose Quartz' romance...

...on Steven Universe.

It feels really earnest, and I adore the way they tackle the inherent misunderstandings that would mostly likely come with an interspecies/interstellar romance.

as usual, people that post shit without saying what it is are the worst.

Someone already posted the couple before, it's Farscape. I started watching it a while back and stopped, it's an intriguing show with really cool characters. I need to go back and finish it. I really loved the female lead, for that era, she was distinctly strong and non sexualized.

My pick is Tennant's Dr. Who and Rose. I know it's not supposed to be a typical thing for the show itself, but I loved it:

WALL-E and EVE are just the best. They're one of my favorite romances period and part of why WALL-E is my favorite Pixar movie. The ending scene of
EVE trying desperately to bring back WALL-E's memory after WALL-E had spent most of the movie trying to win her heart
is so touching (
especially the part where she gives up and starts quietly humming the Hello Dolly! tune back to him
).

Since my favorite sci-fi couple of John & Aeryn (Farscape) have already been posted, some others that I immediately think of are:

The Truman Story - I've always found Truman & Lauren's brief romance to be really affecting, a little sad mixed with the sweetness.

Cloud Atlas - Frobisher and Sixsmith are played wonderfully as soulmates doomed to be kept apart as victims of circumstance and time.

My first crush. That should could have crushed me is not lost on me.

As someone who watched the latter seasons of Stargate SG-1 but not Farscape, it's pretty weird to see Claudia Black and Ben Browder in those gifs, lol.

You've made a terrible mistake.

John and Aeryn are GOAT. No half-ass two hour movie romance can compete. And nothing else on Sci-Fi TV comes close.

Coincidentally, I already addressed your interpretation specifically in a gaming side thread on this very issue about "Pairings/Couples You Dislike". Of course, I was just one in a line of people who disagreed with that pairing. I also went into extensive detail as to why I hated the true ending in the OT for Steins;Gate beyond just that pairing, recapping what I already said in the general VN OT.

I was already pretending that 0 didn't happen by skipping it because I was less than enthused to play it between the premise and how the original ended, but now I'm curious as to what relevance, if any, it has to no longer firmly establishing one "right" choice for players.

Alana and Marko from Saga. It's messy, sweet, funny, touching, sad, happy, and hopeful all at the same time. It's a real marriage/parenting set against an epic story and bonkers characters.

Definitely Wall.E with Eve and Wall.E.

I always had a soft spot for Sam and O'Neill from Stargate SG-1 and Odo and Kira from Deep Space 9 is another one of my favourites.

Mayuri confessed that she was in love with Okabe, who hadn't realised

Steins;Gate isn't about the player's choice, though. It's a story about Okabe, not you. Okabe fell in love with Kurisu. Although he was very good friends with Mayuri, he never developed romantic feelings for her (other than in a non-canon ending where he accepted he couldn't be with Kurisu). Yes, if Kurisu hadn't shown up, that friendship could eventually have grown into romance, but it was pretty clear the entire time that his relationship to Kurisu was different than that to Mayuri.

Also, do play 0. Although you might not like the overarching premise, most of the time it's just a background thing (S;G
after all, this is the Okabe that believes saving Kurisu is impossible and hanging onto Mayuri is the only thing he has left
). It probably won't change your mind about the ending of the first game, but it still has plenty to stand on outside of that.
