What are your expectations for Horizon Zero Dawn?

You hate great game play and a narrative that is surprisingly engaging? You hate games that have protags that are so interesting that you can't wait to get the full game to find out more about them? That's pretty much the consensus of everyone that previewed the game. You hate that kind of stuff?

To be fair, some people only really care about reviews, not previews.

It'll probably be pedestrian and sort of mediocre in the gameplay (and gamedesign) department, with poor writing and stunning visuals.

Pretty much a Ubisoft game with better art.

This is me as well. I don't expect it to be bad, but I don't expect it to be a masterpiece. It will probably be okay/boring, but hopefully it surprises me.

Can you give me some examples of "original" gameplay?

I'm saying Gravity Rush has unique and original gameplay.

I'm saying Gravity Rush has unique and original gameplay.
It is similar in nature to something like Rodea Sky Solider. I do think it is unique relative to the games releasing around it now but it isn't entirely original.

I was getting at the fact that almost all gameplay can be traced back to a game before it. Nothing is truly "original". There isn't anything wrong with that either but I just don't think it should be used as a criticism when it applies to the vast majority of game releases.

My string of questions were not unfair at all. He did not take issue with the fact that the impressions were from previews, he said what was praised were things he hates to see in video games.

I was hype when I saw the trailer...But once I calm down and realized it a GG game...My expectations drop to a "I'll wait for the review and when it on sale" ...GG looks great but tend to be boring as fuck ...So I'm just gonna a wait and see

There's a difference between not being 100% original and being derivative. Nioh is evidently very inspired by the Souls series but it plays pretty much not like Souls at all. You can see the inspiration, but the game is creative enough that it never feels like it doesn't have anything new to add. Same with Gravity Rush.

So yeah it's a valid criticism IMO, not sure if it applies to Horizon but it's a distinct possibility from what we've seen.

I think it looks great and I'd jump in day one... if it didn't release here two days before the Switch and Zelda. As is, I'll wait for a price drop.

Same. I'll circle back to it after Zelda and Mass Effect (unless that ends up sucking). If it's on sale, maybe I'll get to it in April. If not I'd probably grab Persona and keep waiting for a sale on Horizon.

while the game looks great and completely different form anything this developer has done before, im still a bit worried about the depth and length of the game. Ive heard some reports on the game taking only about 20 hours to do everything, which has me a bit skeptical. Ive already pre ordered and im probably buying it but this will be one of the first titles in awhile that im going to wait for reviews before buying.

All I want out of this game is a fun open world game that I can loose hours just doing random side quests and hunts, or whatever the equivalent is in game. I really hope this game has a similar open world style to FFXV.

I expect mediocre standard videogame-ish story, OK combat, fun traversal and explorable world, ok standard quests, good music and repetitive open world gameplay loop.

-Boring story with often horrible acting
-Big map that is filled with too many side quests
-Janky gameplay
-84 Metacritic

It is not looking very good in my opinion.

That's what I'm expecting, only reason I've kept my preorder is because it was $38 from Best Buy... I just don't have much faith in GG and the previews/trailers aren't instilling much confidence in me. I hope to be proven wrong, though.

Although your analysis would suggest 70-75 metacritic or so, where mediocre games typically lie. 84 meta are usually good games.

I do not understand this.

They're basically saying they hate the type of story driven open world games that the mass market and critics tend to enjoy. I.e. That there's a ton of those games that review well that they don't like.

Have you seen the recent machines trailers? They're very good and make me wonder how anyone can think it has janky gameplay.

A 84 metacritic is "not looking very good" around here. I'd like to play games that some of you deem very good then.

87-90 metacritic

game is going to be pretty good. GOTY candidate for sure

fun to play
beautiful to look at
full of details

somewhat average characters/story

Looks incredible and hoping it's good, but it's made by the studio that brought us Killzone...

Based on those games, I'm expecting a laughably bad story with horrendous voice acting and dialogue that makes Kojima's writing seem award worthy.

If the gameplay and open word mechanics are good, I can mostly forgive the other stuff.

84 is a bit too much for the description I guess, but I doubt it would ever go below 80 even with the faults I listed.

I understand I might seem like a blatant "hater" but I can't help it, this game screams disappointment to me.

I expect that it - like No Man's Sky - has been built up a bit too much by hype, and there'll be an unpleasant backlash as it turns out to be a perfectly mediocre game. Come June, people will be ragging on it across their social media and in December it will make no GotY lists but be acknowledged as "kinda alright".

I expect bad voice acting (Ashly Burch) to undermine an otherwise unremarkable story, given their demonstrated level of competence (Killzone). Beyond that, probably likely to be worth the £20 I'll pay for it when it has a price collapse later this year.

Could be in line for GotY awards. Definitely best new IP by miles.

From what I've seen it'll be a toss up between Nier and Mass Effect for my personal GotY.

Solid game that starts out really strong and then falters a bit as it progresses due to repetitive missions. I expect the MC to be around 80 to 83. Expect to see a lot of Far Cry 3/4 comparisons.

Guerrilla is a team that does a fantastic job of showing off vertical slices that end up falling apart a little bit in the final product. I'm still looking forward to Horizon but I'm keeping my expectations in check.

Yeah that just sounds like a different coat of paint on very well known mechanics
Yes, very much like a Doom or Vanquish

Enemies to open world games tend to either be 1) guy with gun/sword (categorized by gun/sword type), 2) animal (usually roaming randomly and charges you), or 3) magic user/monster (usually with two or three different attacks)

Horizon is more arcade-y action shooter, with a focus on weak points and dodging telegraphed attacks

Will this thread be the new "Sony is dead" thread from 2012?

I have no expectations. Just want to see crow being served! When are reviews expected to be released? On release day?

thing is we've seen so much of the game already. worst case scenario it's an above average take on the open world tower conquest genre with rpg elements.

i don't expect a 10/10 or a 9/10 but it odds are anything but terrible on this given what's out there

Some people only care about reviews, and not even actually playing the game too.
