What do you expect of Resident Evil 7?

What I want: A return to the slower pace of RE4, still an action game but with a tight campaign and more horror elements. Would like co-op to be removed and a decent weapon upgrade system to be implemented.

What I expect: The opposite of this, I think it will be similar to RE6 but hopefully better. I know people really like RE6's gameplay, but the game has to be a full-on action game to justify those controls, so I would like them to go personally.

I'm expecting more intelligence-insulting action garbage like RE6.
I wish for something like REmake.
I'd be happy with something like Revelations 2.

They'll either go back to their 1-3 roots while taking elements from 4-6 (basically fixed camera but most of the time 3rd person, modernized combat and co-op), or try something completely new (1st person? VR?)

What I hope for: RE6 mechanics with better campaign(s) and a better tutorial. More moves, not just context sensitive attacks, more weapons and a ton of enemies.

What I fear: a cross between old style and new style that will end up in crap like Revelations: no horror, no atmosphere, dumb as fuck story, lame combat - basically the worst of both worlds.

I expect Revelations/2 with a bigger budget, refined pacing, modified controls and even more obvious influence from REmake.

Being that Revelations 2 is the basis I'm expecting to be build upon, I'm also expecting more gameplay elements to be adapted from The Last of Us. Not necessarily stealth (although that could be cool), but evasion of enemies to preserve resources in a way more similar to TLOU than the old RE games.
Perhaps weapon durability too? This is fun to think about.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
I'm a huge Leon fan and I can say that I've had way more than enough of that character for now. I hope Sherry returns.

honestly, if it has the same fixed over the shoulder camera of the last god know how many, i don't care what it's about, i'm not interested. either go back to their traditional camera angles (not necessarily fixed) or have a bit more freedom like uncharted's camera)

I expect it to continue in the horror/action direction. One thing I am hoping for is that they move away from Jill, Chris, and Leon. They've relied too heavily on them over the years. I'd like to see a completely new set of main characters. They haven't presented a completely original pair of playable characters since RE2. There have obviously been games where they introduce new characters alongside those existing characters, but not new leads that are carrying the games on their own.

What I Want: Grounded Survival Horror with a hint of cheese

What I expect: Ill tempered frickin mutated mega zombie sharks with grenade launches mutating out of their backs flying 60ft in the air punching rocks

E3 is right around the corner, and there's a high chance RE7 will be revealed at the event.

Any last minute guesses we got? Curious to see what people think now, versus whenever it first gets revealed, no matter what it ends up being like.

They're going to try to do RE4 again is my guess (a scenario detached from the canon enough so as to remove expectations entirely, and a rethinking of the staples of the series while still quintessentially constituting Biohazard), while also taking the opportunity to re-establish what defines the franchise after the divisive reaction to RE6, so another action TPS isn't a safe bet anymore.

I'm going to expect the unexpected. And Becky.

I expect RE7 to be a return to roots as per the rumor with an isolated village and/or research facility and slower paced gameplay. I'm also expecting the same amount of terrible anime story as seen in recent games to return.

I expect it'll be another game I don't care for at all. I don't like the TPS genre and the chances of them going for something REmake like are close to zero. My only hope is for a spin-off to get the RE I want.

A bat shit insane story I can't even begin to care about and mindless QTE co-op action gameplay

Prove me wrong Capcpom

I'd say Rebecca is a guarantee after suddenly showing up in the play and a cg movie, after being out of new scenarios for 15 years.
Co-op stays.

Can't see them going crazy again with 4 campaigns, seems too expensive(as it did with 6). Would like being wrong though.

Conceptually?

I want a proper execution of Biohazard 6 with only the core characters. Leon, Chris, Jill, Claire, Sherry, Ada, etc. Don't give me any minor characters not worth a damn.

I know lore-wise, the story is already past that phase. But I grew up playing RE1/2/3/Code Veronica expecting all the games in the series to lead up to an Avengers-equivalent finale where I'll get to see all the characters come together in one game to take down Umbrella.

Give me that game. Gimme that fucking Avengers 3 Biohazard Edition.

A expansive finale to the characters. A story about these unlikely survivors of bio-terrorism coming together for one last ride as it delivers a final cap-off to Chris & co.

The "divisive reaction" was mostly just forum murmuring. The game still sold exceptionally well. It was only Capcom's utterly crazy expectations that made it "underperform." I'm not saying that they won't go the direction you suggest, but just because it was divisive amongst an extreme minority really isn't a good point to bring to that, in my opinion

At the very least, no matter what changes are made, I think any expectation of them dropping co-op just isn't reasonable. The series sailed to new financial heights when it was introduced in RE5, and the series has been very healthy from a financial standpoint ever since. That isn't going anywhere.

I miss engaging in mortal kombat with boulders in my resident evil.

Ship's kinda sailed, tbh.
Wesker's dead, Spencer's dead, Alex is dead, Umbrella's gone, even Neo-Umbrella is gone
. I can't imagine an all-star grudge match against
adult Natalia
or some random Bioterrorist of the week would get the fans juicy.

It sold very well, and personally I absolutely loved it. But the level of criticism is unprecedented for a mainline RE title. Japanese fans were unusually harsh on it, which rarely happens for numbered Biohazard games. That's got to have shaken Capcom up a bit.

If they were to 'make another RE6' as some are fearing, Capcom would undoubtedly have another strong seller, but I think we've reached the point where Capcom needs to start reassuring doubters for the sake of long-term confidence in the company and the brand.

I'm liking all these rumors about RE returning to it's roots, but I won't let myself believe them.

Just make it more like RE4 but I know that's not going to happen.

I know. My post is largely salt.

As much as I loved RE4, it deeply annoyed me the "Leon, Chris, and co takes down Umbrella" happened off-screen.

Eh would me however,
Chris, Jill, Barry and Rebecca + maybe Claire & Moira
vs who you mentioned.

RE8
Leon and Ada + Sherry and Jake
vs a final shadow company with direct ties to Ada, Alex, Simmons, etc

Personally I would like Jill to be the only main playable character in a soft reboot that is mostly disconnected from the rest of the series. I can't remember any mention of her in RE6 so not sure what her current status is. I would prefer a full-on reboot but that's not gonna happen with REmake 2 still to come.

From the success of Revelations, PT, the HD remake, and countless other indie horror games I feel like Capcom HAS to know that a true survival horror experience is the way to go, but I'm Capcpom will be Capcpom and we'll get another co-op oriented action game.

I don't care which direction they go in with the game. I appreciate both old-school RE and new-school RE. What's important is that the game they ship needs to be polished. It needs great mechanics and great level design. RE5 is my game of the past generation, and I finished RE6 for the first time last night, and it is one of the worst games I have ever played. It scares me that the capcom PR said "fans felt the game was too bloated". No, too much content in a game is rarely a problem, unless the game itself is not fun, which was the case with RE6. Shitty and floaty aiming, terrible enemy encounters, frustrating gameplay all-around. Revelations 2 was the same.

RE7 needs to have experienced people helming it. The people in charge of both 6 and R2 were all incompetent in my book. Keep them far away from RE7. Put the director of 5 back in charge, and everything will be right with the world.

You have to keep in mind that this criticism is from a vocal minority. As vocal as it might be, at the end of the day, it's an extreme minority that's a very small fraction of the actual fanbase. There's lots of franchise that get shit on online but still sell great from installment to installment.

The Revelation games were both co-op, PT was a free download, and HD remake, while selling good, isn't close to the sales of the action oriented co-op titles. Are we sure it's the only way to go?

A tight experience, a singular campaign, a blank slate and a mix of action/horror elements like RE 4. No co-op. Just stick to Mercenaries for some co-op stuff.

You're right, but it's not so much the criticism of RE6 itself which makes me think there's a chance they're going to U-turn, but the fact that RE generally doesn't inspire that level of vitriol. Not even RE5 was hated as much as RE6. When Capcom says that they want to move away from what RE6 did and more towards a fuzzily-defined sense of 'roots', I can believe them.

I don't know if it's easier to get a horror game made these days, despite what people want, but it definitely feels like the hardcore style of game is becoming fashionable again.

My expectations are low and I'm going to keep them there. Hearing Capcom mention TLOU as if they might be taking inspiration from it spells trouble, they just can't stop trying to mimic other devs with totally different skillsets.

I took the TLoU namedrop as an indication that they're more confident about making a game which breaks ground rather than being directly inspired by it. And besides, Revelations 2 was practically an homage to ND's game as it is, so I'm sure they've got it out of their system.

Hell, even Mikami himself couldn't totally recapture the magic with The Evil Within.
