What over the counter painkiller is best for severe pain?

What over the counter painkiller is the best for treating severe pain of all sorts especially soreness, abdominal pain, and trauma (like smashing your finger in a car door).

I'm hurting like hell, and I need to take something. I already took 2 Ibprofin but it's not doing shit, is it safe to take two more?

I like Advil myself, especialy for abdominal pain. But - if you are really hurt - you should think about going to the doctor.

REALLY don't feel like going to the doctor over this. I just want to know if it's ok to take 4 tylonals or 4 ibprofins. I'm 5'5'' and about 118 if that makes a difference.

I NEED RELIEF.

So did you smash your finger in the door or something else? If so applying ice it will help relieve some of the pain.

get something where the active ingredient is codeine (along with paracetemol or whatever)

Nah, I'm just referring to the sharp kind of pain associated with an injury such as that. Any sharp shooting pain that's not just some pansy ache or pain.

Codeine is not legal OTC in the US.

Lemur.... your weight and development probably means you should take no more than 3 ibuprofren in a 4 hour period.

I would suggest getting something like Tylenol PM. The pain relief wont be all that hot compared to 3 Ibus, but the sleep aid will knock you out for a few hours. Sleeping people dont feel pain.

Tylenol contains acetaminophen. Advil contains ibuprofen. It seems to vary from person to person what works best -- my mother swears by acetaminophen while I find that it does nothing for me. I much prefer ibuprofen.

So if the ibuprofen isn't working for you, you could try some acetaminophen. How long ago did you take the ibuprofen? You need to wait at least 4 hours before you take two more of anything.

I'm not sure if height/weight has anything to do with it, but I'm about the same size as you and I have taken 4 ibuprofen in a day without any trouble. I'd be wary of taking any more than that, though.

No expert advice here, just going by what works for me. Be careful that you don't overdoes on anything or you might have to go to the hospital. There are some online dosage calculators, but they are mostly for estimating the dosage for small children. That might still help you out, though.

what a drag. go to the doctor and say you suffer migraines. get some tramadol. I really do suffer migraines, and it's almost worth it for some of those things.

I'll try and find one. I took the ibuprofen about an hour and a half ago and it's not doing anything for me after at least 3 hours go by I think I'll try tylonal.

Just to be certain, if I take asprin it CAN kill me, right?

catfish, what country are you from (just wondering if codeine is illegal in most countries or US is a rare exception once again :p)

Geez, how old are you?
Of course it can, if you take too much...

Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory. It will not have an effect on every minor pain. Ibuprofen will thin out your blood a bit. Combining it with other medication is thus VERY VERY BAD. Large doses are also pretty bad.

Large doses of acetaminophen are equivalent to shoving a giant plastic-meltingly hot cock into your liver. Acetaminophen is medically a pain killer and it also reduces fevers. Drinking while taking acetaminophen is like taking a chipper schredder to your liver. Taking acetaminophen as a hangover remedy is thusly a VERY BAD IDEA.

What's the nature of your pain?

The moral of the story? STAY AWAY FROM THIS SHIT, KIDS!

:lol :lol :lol
I love how you make it sound like it's gonna kill after popping two or three of them.

But, I think what White Man is trying to say, is don't take these all the time. It's not good for you. And it's never, ever good to combine it with other meds.

I'm 14, I just heard that if you're under 21 it causes Rhyes Syndrome.

New Zealand and it's legal, it's in quite a few of the different painkillers. It works good. Is codeine illegal in states or just not over the counter?

Well, doing these things won't hurt you if you do it once, but when people start taking big doses, or mixing these two drugs, it often becomes a habit. "Last time I took 800mg of ibuprofen and my toothache went away, so I'd better take that much this time. Or more."

It just isn't a good idea to be taking too much medication, especially without letting a good amount of time to elapse and if you're petite. Try icing it down or something. Shake it off.

Don't count on it. Just don't get into the habit of popping an asprin or something every time you get a headache. If you took some today, then take some tonight, and tomorrow would probably be ok. If the pain continues beyond that, see a doctor as soon as possible.

Considering your weight I wouldn't take more than one or two at a time, and only twice a day.

I had 900mg ibuprofen pills once. Those were awesome.

I believe in the US, 600+ mg ibuprofen pills are prescription only. They charge you out the ass for the prescription when you could just go to the 7-11, but Ghetto Brand 200mg Ibuprofen, and take 3 of them for the same effect.

Yeah, I got them for my back injury. Whether or not they cost a lot was irrelevant to me, as it was covered by workman's comp. Go workman's comp, go!

I'm not preggers and 700mg sounds pretty good right about now.

If you want to make your pain truly go away, drink an entire bottle of over the counter cough medicine.

Or eat an entire bottle of Dramamine.

PS: Either of these solutions will solve your pregnancy problem, as well.

Lemurs - take tylenol PM. Two should be quite enough.

Ive taken 6 ibuprofen at once for a severe neck sprain... it worked nicely, but it is way too much for a 14 year old.

go with 600mg of ibuprofen. i wouldn't take more than that. if your finger is broken or fractured you're going to need to go to the doctor. can you bend it?

also, don't you have cystic fibrosis or something?

Yes, and my finger isn't broken. Even if it was, all the doctors would be able to do is maybe pop it back into place and tape it to another finger.

Codiene is only available over the counter in very small doses in New Zealand. You need a prescription to get the stuff that isn't cut with paracetemol (I'm well aware I spelt that wrong).

I have a ton of good painkillers left over from some unfortunate accidents. Sucks to be you. :lol

I took 600mg Ibuprofen, twice a day, for three years. According to studies, it reduces the inflammation in the lungs.

Go for broke, Lemur.

As long as thin blood isn't a medical issue, doesn't have an effect on other meds you are taking, and you're not prone to seizures, I don't think there's a major negative effect to ibuprofen. It's major downfall is that it's just not so useful in a lot of minor pain situations.

I'm less than that, I haven't weighed myself in a while, I think I'm probably around 109 110.

These weights are incomprehensible to me. My ex-girlfriend from 8 years ago recently looked me up and told me she's 85 pounds (she's 5' for the record). I mean, christ, I can curl 85 pounds, I can't imagine a full person weighing 85 pounds, even if that's what they're supposed to for their height.

Dare I ask what's a CF'er?
