What we know so far about the Nintendo NX with sources

Nice get for Vulkan and Linux gaming. UE4 running on the Vulkan API removes a lot of roadblocks for Linux ports.

Kind of off-topic for the Nintendo NX thread, though... Nintendo uses a proprietary API.
Yeah, just re-read my post and saw how much I messed up. Oops
Well if Nintendo really wanted to pursue VR then they'd put a 1080p screen in the handheld off the bat (but only let games run at 540p to prevent over-stretching the GPU) and sell a GearVR style headset for it that could be used to stream full-res VR from the home console with similar low-latency wireless streaming tech they used in the Wii U. They could probably hit the lowest all-in price for a "full" VR system while being fully wireless.

Not that I at expect any kind of VR from Nintendo (at least not for a few years yet, if at all), but from a theoretical perspective they'd actually be in a surprisingly good place to pursue VR.
They're looking into VR so if it does take off that's an option they can pursue even if it's not in place until the next revision

I feel like whenever someone comes along and says they're a Nintendo insider, there are a lot of questions people forget to ask.

Such as...
- What's the deal with SF Zero and control issues?
- Where's Federation Force?
- Since Zelda NX is going to be a thing, what about Smash NX?
- What's up with Metroid in general?
- Where's Kirby?
- Retro is working on...?
- Nintendo Direct is when?
- When is the ____ amiibo being restocked?
- When's Nintendo bringing analog triggers back?

And so on.

It's not so much that people forget to ask. It's more like they assume that if an Insider had more to leak they would. Usually they don't play 20 Questions with us.

Did Trev say he had info on the upcoming 3DS schedule? That might explain something of what's going on with Federation Force. The fact that it's been totally AWOL since E3 and notably missed all PR and the November Direct since then indicates they're doing something with it. Maybe not huge, but I doubt it'll be released in a form identical to what we saw at reveal.

I'm calling maybe a quiet September or August launch personally, but that's just a semi-educated guess. I'm not an insider.

Yeah I can agree with this speculation. After that backlash they are probably reworking the game or maybe it was just scrapped. Been some time since we heard anything about it.

My impression is they keep all that stuff at NOA/NOE on a need to know basis.

So someone from Retro wouldn't know what Next Level Games is doing (unless they're directly working with them on a project), or what games the Treehouse is working on localization for. Some folks in the Treehouse wouldn't know what games other people are working on in the Treehouse or what Retro is working on. Most people in the NOA office don't know what the technology group is working on in regards to NX hardware.

Obviously some of those decisions are being made in Japan and very few people overseas would know.

They should focus all their efforts on Blast Ball to ride the Rocket League wave.

There is one BIG problem with VR. I've the oculus for about 1.5y. I also played technolust. I can tell you that all games and specially FPS games is making you Sick when you'r using mouse movements together with a headset. I hope they can fix it, I still doubts that it will be possible.

Still, VR is a nice gimmick and can be used for onrail games or games where you dont have to need allot of mouse/controller movement actions.

What verification are you guys waiting for?

I still think motion sickness will be one of the biggest issues with VR down the line. But that is something we will only know when VR is being played for longer by periods by a larger number of people.

This is probably very true, and probably limits the potential leaks. Stuff like "NX is releasing in 2016" may be very common knowledge within the company as it affects the planning for a lot of projects, whereas specifics on certain games could be limited to just a few people. So it's unlikely one will get answers to most questions; not just because the person may not know about it, but because if they do it's probably not a good idea to talk about it if you're one of few to know.

Yup. Companies like Nintendo are usually heavily compartmentalized. Everyone has a piece of the pie in terms of the overall knowing of the company but only the higher ups at HQ know it all. At best Nintendo insiders know individuals who know that their particular studio or group is working on.

The only way you're gonna find out from one source what a bunch of different studios are working on is if the contact is Miyamoto, Kimishima, or members of the board.

I bet you Aonuma of the Zelda team has no fucken idea what the other EPD teams or retro is working on.

Didn't occulus change a lot during the last 1.5 years of development? You would think so. Did you get continually updated versions or is your version this old? It may not be very representative of the final product.

Isn't this kind of basically almost confirmed now after the Serkan Toto rumor?

I have a very good friend that works at Retro. She does not talk about what they're working on until it's been announced. Period. Not even a slight hint. Two days before TF was announced she asked me what I thought they were working on. I ranked my predictions and said my best guess was a DKCR sequel. Perfect poker face (she did admit after the fact that she really wanted to tell me but couldn't). She wouldn't even confirm we'd see something from them at E3. These guys take their secrecy every bit as seriously at Apple.

Also all development goes through NCL. NoA has no control over Retro at all; they're completely under Japan's supervision. That goes for second-party development as well like Next Level Games or Monster Games. NoA is purely a marketing/distributing arm.

Its the devkit 2. I still have it with the new software. I played allot of games without needing mouse actions like in fps games. I didnt get sick. Only when I needed to use the mouse and turning my head. I think thats because your brain isnt expected to move in 2 directions in the same time. I never got sick from 3d stuff. I even had the virtual boy and 3ds and created own stereoscopic stuff. I know that there are some people that has issues in general with vr/3d stereo effects. Like my wife got sick by every oculus game. Even has issues with 3ds looking in 3d.

For the oculus owners. I can give you 2 demos that are perfect.

And project cafe.

Its just amazing.

Ah, gotcha. I appreciate the clarification re: BC, thabk you. I also appreciate the info about the expected HH power level. I still think though that even if NX HH gets a Zelda U port, it would make for a strange launch title if we only got that and the Wii U version this year, as I was saying in my reply to James Scott above. If customers know the best version if Zelda is coming to NX console but not available yet so they can only get a downgraded HH version or a version on a console on its way out, it seems like they might just prefer to wait for that version.

Not necessarily. Ocarina and Majora 3D did really well, so there is a quantifiable market for 3D Zelda on handhelds.

Claiming something is Knowledge =/= knowledge

Hence the waiting for verification ...

Recent rumours suggested the handheld would launch this year; the console 2017.

But the way this rumour is phrased sounds like Zelda nx is confirmed, but console is only assumed as a result of that.
To those of us thinking both systems will be capable of playing the same games it's not a safe assumption to make.

How is this a leak? Everyone knew this the second Zelda got delayed and NX was announced.
There is a difference between knowing and educated guessing.

We didn't know for sure NX is coming this year either. And we don't know if it's the handheld or the console and if both will be released at the same time.

All the current info we have now isnt earth shattering

Assuming the sources are true the majority of it is just logical predictions and logical progression from their current position

And those are easy to make given the official statements thus far

LOL, I knew something wasn't right with that spelling.

Anyway, while Nintendo's API will be proprietary, it will undoubtedly be based on Vulkan, considering that Nintendo is now part of the working group for Vulkan.

It's Nintendo so it won't happen. The game was in a pretty advanced form at E3 and that should rule out any dramatic change to the game. I think they are maybe making the game more attractive by including tons of content and a serious story.

1- It's definitely NOT scrapped.

2- The game itself actually plays well, so you can't just cancel a game every time voices from the internet start rallying with pitchforks over a non-game breaking issue. I'm sure the producer and development team will try and make adjustments to please the internet minority, but the game itself probably had a bigger audience already in mind during its conception.
