When Newer Entries of Gaming Franchises come out do you no longer play the older versions

So for like fighting games like Tekken, Soul Calibur, Mortal Kombat and Street fighter do you always stick to the latest entries?

Also for first person shooters like call of duty and battlefield do you just stick to the latest entries for these and hardly go back to playing the older games?

with sp games I'm generally done after finishing it, with the exceptions being the one that are highly replayable.
for mp it depends if it's a big difference between the entries which means I'll still boot up the previous one from time to time

I often plan to come back to games that I didn't finish or that I want to revisit. I buy physical when I can just in case that day is a long time in the future.

...but knowing how way leads to way, I doubt many of us ever go back.

The way games are patched now, you can miss the magic by playing too early or too late.

Especially soulslikes. Current patches tend to nerf them over and over again during the first couple of months. Also, soulslikes that start off middling can become great with many patches over time. There is no hard and fast rule to play the golden patch. You just have to cross your fingers and jump in. You can't preserve it. Sometimes it only lasts one patch period. The perfect game has been patched in and patched out of existence over the years across many games. If you ever find this golden patch in a game, play it while you can. It won't be around forever.

There's certain games that have storied history and remain relevant today even with sequels:
Age of empires 2
Street fighter 3 third strike
Smash Melee

SP wise I'll revisit anything good. Diablo 2, metal gear solid 2, onimusha 2, etc.

No, I replay many older serial titles.

In fact, sometimes it's the opposite for me - sequels come along and they feel so disconnected and off rails from what I liked about the previous games that I just completely disconnect and pay no attention to future games in the series, while still playing the older titles.

With MP games I stop immediately. Simple reason is it's more of a level playing field at the start or COD/Battlefields etc.

When you play an old MP game that's been years since release half the modes don't work, games are filled with sweats who know every single location and refuse to move to new games because they are already the best in this game and cheats are the norm after a while.
