When was the first time you felt 'TRULY' terrified in a game?

maxresdefault.jpg
I hated this part. Felt like a crap indie game....
I was really scared in Silent Hill 2 when it was new.

Underwater levels when I was younger. Mario 64. Shit was dark and creepy.

I remembered getting jump scared to shit in tomb raider ps1 when those tigers attacked me in the cave lol. Not a scary game but I remember getting jump scared not expecting them

Silent Hill 2 and 3. 1 was great but it didn't spook me as much in comparison. 3 hit me the most. The Brookhaven Hospital with the constant hints that Stanley is watching you nearby, the wheelchair in the basement, that fucking mirror room. The sounds of someone walking around in the construction area and you never find out who it is. That long descent below in the center of the mall in the darkness. The knocking bathroom door. The mannequin room. Plenty of modern horror games have done similar scares but OG Silent Hill games are the king.

I used to be a scaredy-cat to the point that I never tried any of the Resident Evils until two years after RE4 came out.
RE4 was so visually spectacular that I just had to finish it and I am glad I did because it gave me the courage to try so many other horror games.
with the exception of FEAR and CONDOMENED, nothing had scared me since, until ... PT was released.
I first tried the demo with my Sony Gold headset and 3D/surround audio.
the sheer terror that the first sighting of Lisa caused me, the sleepless nights that followed with me hopelessly trying to solve the messed-up final puzzle while reducing my life expectancy by years
was perhaps the most unforgettable memory I have ever had of a horror game.

Tell us about yours!
(kindly blur out any spoilers)
For me Resident Evil, i played it at nighttime alone in da house, cous i did want that someone heard me screaming😳

Jumpscare? Probably re2 when the zombies break the wood plank in the windows.

Stressed enough to turn off the console? Condemned 1, the area where you have to find 4 clues in the mirrors and there is an infinite spawn of enemies at irregualr times so you never know when to look around and when to concentrate on the mirrors, incredible atmosphere for the whole game, such an underrated masterpiece.

Maybe about 8 hours into FF13 I realized that it was all going to be corridors and I was terrified at what FF had turned into and stopped playing.

Probably Are You Afraid of the Dark? The Tale of Orpheo's Curse.

That's actually a really great adventure game and it feels like an episode of the series. It has lots of instant deaths and wasn't too challenging. I managed to beat it as a kid. Came with our first PC, a forest green Acer Aspire. You can find the rom file online, but I haven't taken the time to get it set up with dos-box, really want to revisit it. Haven't played it in over 20 years.

That PC also came with Jazz Jackrabbit, Tyrian, Epic Pinball, and a few others. Absolute classics, especially Tyrian. It's on GOG for free, one of the first games on there, such a great shooter with great pixel art and music. As for Epic, it was so bizarre seeing GOW blow up and thinking, "isn't that the company that made Jazz Jackrabbit and Epic Pinball??" What a trip.

Fetal Frame 2. My mate just put it on and then fucked off to the shops to leave me to play it on my own.
Fucker.

Special mention to Siren: Blood Curse...

Spot on with Siren: Blood Curse.

Truly terrifying game, I actually tried playing it the other week but the controls felt weird as hell, didn't have the patience for it. I'll go back to it at some point and give it the necessary time. That was actually the first game I bought off the PSN store when I got my PS3. I used to own the Japanese physical copy but lent it to a friend and never got it back. Dude also has my copy of Folklore! Bastard...

Halfway into Bioshock I was standing in knee deep water looking out the window as water is streaming in There's maniquins floating in the water and the entire time Papa loves Mambo is playing over a speaker. I got a case of the Heebie Jeebies.

First time truly terrified it was the first shark encounter in Ecco Defender of the Future.

Failed to find a video of the shark chasing you with looking back camera. No other game gave me true fear like that.

Sweaty hands tense was on Clock Tower and P.T., but I do enjoy the tension of survival horror games, it's part of the fun.

Maneater gave me similar anxiety lol.

I'm not a reactive person, jump scares and such just don't bother me and I can't think of a game or movie that has ever really scared me..
the closest to bothering me would be like.. The Exorcist movie does get to me because it feels so real and watching a sweet child suffer gets me emotional..
but I don't really get scared.

never really terrified, but opening a door in DOOM to find a shit-ton of monsters gave me several jumps

also the dog jumping through the window in resident evil code veronica, made me jump lol

No question OG Resident Evil, bought the game without much knowledge and started playing it in a dark room. Learned then this was not a genre for me and have since followed the story of the game without playing any of them.

Me being very young playing tomb raider 3 and then a tiger jumping at me!

I can't imagine how terrifying must be playing scary games with much better realism! That's why scary games are not for me!

it is curious how everyone mentions this specific part of the game
I wonder what made it so special
because the lighting, the sound effect, etc. ...absolutely nothing about that scene was intentionally scary. nor was the dog even half as terrifying an enemy as the Licker or Nemesis but the memory of this scene has still somehow managed to remain strong in our minds
I think all children share a fear of dogs

RE7 in PSVR. Even more so when my character had no weapons. For me the immersion was so good that I truly felt more anxious in the game if I did not have a weapon. The simple act of even having a gun (even if it only had 2 bullets) made me feel more safe.

No other game has done that to me before or since.
