When was the first time you felt 'TRULY' terrified in a game?

Amnesia the Dark Descent. Somehow I managed to finish the game but still, fuck that game. I usually "nope out" on scary games. I made it like 15 minutes into Silent Hill 2. lol

the last time I went " nope nope nope " was here in RE7.

The opening hour of RE7 is masterful. It transcended the usual horror camp found in the series and became something truly atmospheric and unsettling. I wish I had played it in VR first. The quality of the game takes a pretty big nose dive once you start getting an arsenal.

Hey, it was the early 80s! You had to use your imagination. Plus, it was the era Atari really sold the gameplay with the box design. There was also no shortage of scary/bizzare movies back then. Also plenty of ghoulish serial killer shit going on in real life too.

My kids and their cousins have PT parties where they turn off all the lights force each other to walk down the hall.

Most of them are definitely scarred for life

The moment I started Elden Ring and saw the stuttering and frame drops. One week vacation down the drain. THAT is horrifying. Won't play until they fix the game!

I don't scare easily and have played many horror games throughout my time.

FEAR/Outlast managed to cling to my nerves as did PT.

However - honestly - the first game that truly got me in terms of fear was Half Life 2 in Ravenholm. I have a very stark memory of being on a rooftop, chased by the red headcrabbed beings and the fires etc.

Also - though I was a bit older before playing it - in the original Gears of War an the power plant and the clickers.

Dead Space on PS3. I had to play it in small chunks cos it absolutely terrified me. I loved it though but fuck it was stressful. It was the sound design more than anything. It was done so well and extremely atmospheric.

I wouldn't say scared as such, but I found the bigger hordes in Days Gone very interesting.

When you find the biggest one, at the saw mill, you have to be absolutely ready and fully stocked with the best guns and every type of explosives or you won't make it.

There are a few jump scares in Prey which had me startled too.

P.S Special mention to the xenomorph in Alien Isolation.

I played all the Silent hills, RE, P.T. and more recently Visage games, great games especially Silent hills ones.
I've been stressed, feel uneasy at time, jump scared sometimes, tensed, nervous, sometimes a bit afraid.
But i don't think i've ever feel truly terrified in a video game. The most horrific experience for me was probably the first time i've watched Alien in the 80s as a kid. Love it though.

Dead Space. I had missed the PS1 and PS2 era Resident Evil franchise entries so I had no idea what DS had in store. In the first few minutes I went from creeping dread to full on terror. That game taught me to enjoy being outside my comfort zone, in some ways it inspired me to challenge myself more.

Well it's got to be either Doom, Quake 1 or when Lara Croft first encounter's the T Rex in Tomb Raider 1 for the 1st time,, a long time ago now but one of those 3 at the time, then a little later in the Alien vs Predator pc game when the motion sensor would go crazy and the Aliens would attack.

As a kid, the first Resident Evil terrified me. The first zombie you encounter and then the dogs jumping through the window. Resident Evil 2 was just as bad with the Lickers. Then, of course, the remake of Resident Evil on GC introduced the Crimson Heads. Now they were pure terror. Silent Hill 2's Pyramid Head was also terrifying.

As an adult, Resident Evil VII, Visage, Amnesia, and Alien Isolation all scared me, but no to the extent Resi did when I was a child. I prefer games that offer psychological horror rather than cheap jump scares.

this game was such as meta horror experience
fake game-over screens, the game becoming self-aware and turning the volume up and down, the main character staring and shooting at the screen trying to kill you
I heard some players encountered a similar anomaly in PT . apparently Lisa got to them while they were using the menu

would have been interesting if devs could get players' permission to do more META stuff post-game (sending fake emails, messing with you smart TV, etc.)

on a side note, I don't know which one I dislike more, the RED ENGINE or their optimisation techniques
people tend to forget what TW3 promised and what it delivered instead
they kept criticising WD1 for its downgrade but back then everyone let CDPR's lies slide
still can't get the first trailer out of my head

As a fairly littleun, my first encounter with those banshee enemies in Ocarina was pretty terrifying. The shriek coupled with a loss of the ability to move while that thing lumbered slowly towards Link, all in ultra-realistic pointy sprites...

...okay, so it's silly now, but it was pretty terrifying to me then. The whole shadow temple made me feel a bit ill as well, if not exactly frightened.

Another one I remember being pretty creepy was Resident Evil. I wasn't playing, but watching one of my brothers go through the raven setpiece in the police station was pretty chilling.

dont worry , after the next gen TW3 patch arrives , it will look better than the first trailer

Condemned: Criminal Origins is the first game that actually ever scared me on a consistent basis.

I think both Condemned and Doom 3 were the only ones to really do it for me.
