I'm not sure I fully believe the "source". I don't doubt they wanted less Rey, but I can't imagine them completely removing her because she was a girl. I don't buy that they removed the star of the film for that reason.
Its also weird because Hasbro has been making efforts to erase gender lines in their Transformers lines, no idea why they would do the opposite for Star Wars.
Everyone knew Star Wars would sell because its Star Wars. It always does. I just can't buy this "source".
I suspect that parts of Hasbro want to erase the gender lines, while other parts want to enforce them.
Bob Forward and Larry DiTillio apparently had to
fight Hasbro in order to allow them to make Airazor a female in Beast Wars (
years after those barriers were deliberately broken down in G1).
Kurtzman and Orci apparently wanted to have Arcee in the live action Transformers movie, but then Michael Bay rejected her because she was too small to punch robots in the face. They came back for Transformers 2 with the idea that she was a combiner,
three motorcycles who could combine into one robot, so now she was bigger. Michael Bay said "Nope, still hate her. But now I'm going to kill her unceremoniously onscreen, because fuck you."
K&O tried to bring her back again in Transformers Prime, to make up for that shit and do things the way they wanted, but Hasbro apparently mildly resisted, so they insisted, and got their way. And then Airachnid was apparently brought in because Hasbro was uncomfortable with girls fighting boys, and thought they should bring in a girl for Arcee to fight.
So there are good people trying to do good things inside Hasbro, but I'm sure there are a fair number of dinosaurs back there too.
