Where’s Rey? Insider Says Vendors Removed Star Wars Character to ‘Improve Sales'

Aside from the point sort of but I was in a HMV queing at the tills and a young girl picked up a Rey toy (one of those funko things) and said 'a girl one' and her mother told her to put it down and said 'we'll buy you a Disney princess for your birthday'

I assumed that little girl isn't getting a Star Wars toy any time soon. Poor thing.

Know how I know this motherfucker isn't an insider?

The fact that Bloomberg had a cover article a couple of weeks ago pointing out that the princess market is one of the most profitable markets still left?

The fact that people are taking the insider at face value is 100% folks wanting confirmation bias.

For real though where that Black Series TFA figure with a blue lightsaber at. I don't even care if it's Rey or not, I just want a lightsaber so the Rey figure I already have can hold it. They don't even have a Finn with the lightsaber. Only lightsaber is Kylo, and his isn't even movie accurate dammit!

I'm not exactly sure that this would fall under Poe's law since regardless of the tone, there didn't need to be any exaggeration or anything. :p

but yeah I was just mentioning it as a summary of the situation and to point out the obvious catch 22.
To break out of it, either change the perception of whats a girl toy and you'll see girls playing with them or let girls play with non-girl toys and suddenly people will realize they're girl toys too. The difficulty is making it a large scale thing but I'm pretty sure that there's entire fields devoted to that sort of thing *cough* marketing *cough*

I actually had a friend of mine (expecting a child otw) say he didn't want a daughter because he didn't want to play with dolls and have tea parties.

After I held back vomiting immediately, I proceeded to ream him up one way and down the other about why people think that way and how backwards it is. And this guy isn't dumb at all.

These notions are really ingrained in people nowadays, its scary and sad.

Why do people keep saying this? He pulled info out of Lukes head, just because they didn't give us a drawn out scene basically explaining this ability doesn't mean he was unable to utilize it.

He really didn't though, those thoughts were out in front. He caught flashes of things that Luke was throwing out there but when he needed answers and needed to interrogate he could not do it.

The Princess toy sales line has to be bullshit. Frozen made that shit bigger than ever.

Yeah, I don't believe it. The dresses were flying off the shelves down at Disney World - at $70 a pop.
My niece is obsessed with everything Disney princess. I'm trying to introduce her to Star Wars but she's still a bit young.

My son has Captain Phasma pjs.

I don't think my wife realized that she was a girl (we had not gone to see the film yet) until after I pointed it out to her. She thought it was funny - not that my son was wearing a female character on his clothes, but...that he was wearing Brienne of Tarth. :p

Err, Rey figures with BB8 have already been in two waves of Star Wars Black series (by Hasbro). Hasbro made her (and her Speeder) in the 4" line.

In action figure form from Hasbro, I think she is only missing from the 4foot tall battle buddies and the 10" Titans. Both of those have really limited assortments.

I guess she also doesn't have a Mashers, but I don't think there are any TFA mashers yet.

I wouldn't say she was really given short thrift.

Ugh. My dad didn't play with dolls or have tea parties. Instead we played with Lego and he took me fishing and taught me how to gut a fish. I grew up loving Star Wars and I'm absolutely thrilled that the main character is Rey, but growing up I had to play with the "boy toys" if I wanted any Star Wars stuff. It didn't kill me. It won't kill little boys to expose them to female characters either. It might even foster some empathy.

Are these female transformers/visionaries/thundercats engaging characters and worthwhile characters? Are they the main character?

This is far from a "simple fact".

Interesting point, that would depend how you define such. In the case of visionaries, yes, certainly they are as important as others. A shark and dolphin totem respectively, certainly more aggressive than some other male totems.

Is Arcee a main character? I'd except arguments for both, but lets say not.
Cheetara? I would answer yes.

In each of these examples the female characters in question are powerful warriors, above other males in each series. You don't even need to look at historical sales. Go onto amazon and look how many female toys are sold compared to male from the same series. Is this because the characters are bad? Or is it because male children are the primary source of sales, and they are more inclined to play with toys of their own gender? I am a fierce advocate of equality, but I do not expect any business to make products they will not sell to appease an equality that is unwanted when it comes to buying them. It is unrealistic, and unfair. Should any gender of person be able to buy and enjoy any gender of toy? Absolutely, without question.Toys should not be gendered. Should a company be expected to make equal numbers of toys of both gender regardless of who buys them? No. Not at all.

Also available in the 12" figures, and elite die cast line. Another figure is coming out in the main line hasbro figs as well now. Shes had more figures released that alot of the characters actually.

Biggest problem is the demand is crazy for Rey, new generation of fans and girls out there are involved, and they want Rey merch. The focus of the product launch was on Kylo and such, so there is so much more available. Finding a black series Rey is next to impossible, even though the rarity of the figure is equal to all the other main characters.

Why do you call people trash for being correct

Why do you think Wave 2 is full of Rey shit, you think the backlash from this caused it?
No?

I'm saying that it's a dumb trend regardless as seen in all of Marvel's catalogue and that an insider confirming these thoughts isn't surprising.

but you do you, taking my comment as some sort of personal affront.

We ain't talking about Marvel though, we're talking about this fake ass insider vomiting hot garbage when Wave 2 was very clearly designed to push Rey after the movie came out. The lead time on toys points to it being a calculated maneuver to hide her. Whether it was a good move or not isn't the debate.

This isn't even a personal affront, you're just looking for a hill to die on when the ground is flat

She was one of the weaker parts of TFA so that's fine

Glad you could take time out of your busy schedule to come in and shitpost a statement that has nothing to do with the discussion (regardless of how stupid said shitpost is anyway).

In my neck of the woods basically all of Star wars black is rare. I haven't seen anything but Zuvio and Jacket Finn on shelf since the movie came out. Oh yeah, I have seen the TRU exclusives too.

One comment calling out a shitty "insider" opinion is considered dying on a hill?

lol, OK.

Reagan sure did fuck a lot of things up, huh?

Its amazing that to this day we're still finding things that Reagan and/or his cronies have fucked up.

He's like the Carmen Sandiego of awful ideas and policies.

I think you're going a bit too far down the pipe here, Bronson.

Regardless, Disney/Hasbro have a long history of excluding female characters - acting like people who think the same about Rey's toys are idiots or delusional is ridiculous.

Yeah you can't claim indifference on this when you literally said first thing that it's silly for people to continue to deny this being a thing. Make up your mind.

Nah this shit is earned, we're at the point of just literally making shit up now to confirm fears

We have 2 more movies. They have time to think of a better excuse than give away plot points because that will not work on the other 2 =P

You want to make out it's an equality issue rather than a money one, but you don't have anything to support that other than your own social conditioning, which tells you to attribute a business decision to sexism. You forget that these companies WANT everyone's money. They don't want to exclude people, but they also don't want to make things that they cannot sell.

Modern business executives are blind to who the buyer of their toys are now days. A good chunk of the people who buy action figures now days are adults who don't have gender hang ups. If they like it, they buy it. They want complete collections. It is ridiculous how short pack female characters when they have predominate roles in their story universe. Hasbro has no excuse for their logic on Rey when they have fully embraced the My Little Pony Bronie phenomena.

Yeah, there is Rey merch out there. But experience tells me managing action figure aisle during several X-mas that the first wave of the limited product ended up in adult collector and re-seller hands. Very little was left on the shelf for kids (same thing happens to under produced villain figure too).

Huh? Did the people at Disney see the movie? How could anybody think people would think Kylo Ren is cooler with his daddy issues then Rey being badass and relatable.

Because they're stupid. They were clearly trying to produce another Darth Vader but fail to realize why people love him so much. If Darth Vader was just an emotional kid no one would have cared about him as much. Even Darth Maul is more badass than Kylo Ren.

Eh, that's the whole point behind Ren. He's a little shit Vader fanboy.

Out of curiosity; how do you know they weren't adults buying presents for kids?

And if it's re-sellers; aren't they partly trying to inflate the price parents will pay to buy their kids presents?

Which makes him even worse. He couldn't even stand on his own because pretty much everything about him relied on other characters. If I want to see people obsess over Darth Vader, I'll just head to any random SW internet forum for that.

There`s no way this bs is real lol.. Rey is going to print money, no way they would remove it to improve sales. C`mon people.

What is relateable about Rey lol.. She would be relateable to me if I succeeded at everything, but unfortunately in the real world you hold Ls most of the time. I liked emo Vader more than Rey, though I really enjoyed Rey also. All the new characters were fantastic.

I don't get why some don't like Ren being emotional. We didn't need another character-trait-less walking lightsaber like Maul or Grievous and a straight up "I'm evil" character like Vader was in A New Hope would have been boring.

Blame Disney for portraying him as a badass in the same vein as Darth Vader in promotional material.

There's nothing wrong with a character being emotional but Ren was a giant baby who threw tantrums and destroyed stuff when things didn't go his way.

It would be funny if in the next movie Hux killed Kylo and took his lightsaber and becomes the new villain seeing as how everyone agrees he was the real badass.

I had to search who he was because of how totally irrelevant he was in the first movie. He was supposed to be a main character? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Who is everyone lol
