I'm glad Grandpa porked a Chinese Muslim
Canon Powershot A400

Olympus D535

I can get either of these two cameras using my Westlaw points, but they are the only two choices offered, so it really is limited to just these two. I've read the reviews, and for the most part, I'm thinking the Canon is superior. There's apparently some issue with its lens being 45mm, but I'm not sure I understand that. The picture quality looks better from the Canon, although my eyes aren't really that well-trained for determining picture quality. Any opinions?

Go for the Canon, sell it off, then buy the Canon SD300/Ixus 40!

That's what I would do in your situation, I really would!

That kinda costs twice as much as I could sell off the A400 for, so that's not really a feasible option.

My opinion? USED.
Go for the Cannon Powershot A75 or A85 if you can. It pretty much the most popular point and shoot camera with a good range of settings and excellent PQ.

I bought one last year before i upgraded to an slr, and they are great cameras.

Starting at a 45mm equivalent means that it might not be as wide a lens as you might like in some snap-shotty situations.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be much in the way of quality reviews on the D535 out there -- AFAIC, user reviews are often useless (i.e, from an epinions D535 review: "even worse is shooting in the "night mode"-too jittery")

If its your first digicam, I'm sure both cameras will be good enough for getting nice snapshots, and if you're getting it through a "rewards" program, I'm sure you'll be happy with whatever it is you end up with.

Olympus loses just on the fact that it uses the xD card. Let's all join forces to kill this yet another useless flash format ASAP!

As much as I hate that POS expensive of a flash card format, Olympus picture quality is fucking godly. :(

Agreed, I've owned digicams by Sony, Canon, and Olympus; my Olympus which is almost 4 yrs older than either the Sony or Canon, produces a far better picture. I do wish Olympus moves over to SD Cards as did Canon.

My wife has an A400 and the CP-220 printer from Canon and if she can get both of them to work, then they much be easy to use.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm probably going to go with the Canon. I actually had checked out the prices on the memory cards earlier, and xD usually costs twice as much, so screw that. I had actually just bought an SD card recently for my mother's camera too.

My tirade is for the good of Olympus! Fucking xD is marginalising their presence in the digicam market! This is almost as bad as the old days when great Olympus cams only used the goddamned SmartMedia cards! JUST SAY NO TO xD OLYMPUS!!!!!

Neither. You can get the Canon A75 for about the same price and it is a much bette camera. The A510 is also in the same ballpark. Dunno about the Olympus cameras in this price range as much, but at the high end - olympus is king.

I thank you for your responses, but why would you ignore the parameters of my post and suggest something I can neither get with the points, nor without the hassle of reselling the ones I can get?

The Olympus has a higher optical zoom, however if it's not that much of a concern then get the Canon for the cheaper memory cards.

Oh, I didn't even read your post.

In that case, I'd go with the Kodak.
