which franchise will die in the gen ?

Hopefully most of them. Splatoon proves it's time for some fresh new IPs. The old ones have too much baggage and fan expectations attached.

Metal Gear. Silent Hill. Perhaps a Sony franchise.

It really hurts to say this, but what do you guys think the chances of Xenoblade continuing are?
If X is doing well? Reasonably good actually, at worst Monolith does something else entirely, and so long as it's great is that REALLY a loss?

Well, and as long as X doesn't give the impression of being conceived as a much larger series like gears and saga did. Even if both were far more fortunate than, say, Shenmue.
While playing Xenoblade X
you realize that it is just the first episode/prologue of a much bigger series.
Ah shit, seriously? Twin Peaks "It is happening again" I guess.

I honestly think that Monolith is more for the accolades for Nintendo, much like film studios will scoop up some Oscar darling for distribution, even if it's not a very commercially successful movie. Nintendo knows full well that Monolith is never going to crank out a mega hit, but it makes their portfolio look better to have a 1st party console JRPG studio.

I think XCX will be successful enough that Nintendo won't drop the studio or the brand. They'll get them making another game, probably called Xeno something or other.

Can't believe people are really suggesting Halo! The mainline games sell way too much for that to be a realistic possibility and the SP campaigns have always retained a high standard (confusing plot or not).

After two well-received games & a representative in Smash, I think Nintendo would most likely stick with the Xenoblade name since the name is viewed so positively at the moment.

I dunno, I think that Shulk is a well-received character among people outside of the Xenoblade fandom, but at the same time, the marketing material for X has made it pretty clear that Shulk is nowhere in it.

Besides, Smash has a lot of characters that don't have a lot going on at the moment. Ness has been a mainstay since the first game, but he's almost certainly never going to appear in his own game again.

some of these answers are so unrealistic. assassin's creed, cod, battlefield and halo aren't going anywhere. god of war might die and uncharted (only because ND will probably want to do other things. I could see InFamous, LBP, Thief, MoH, Borderlands, Saints Row, Dead Space (I guess that's last gen like MoH), Dead Rising, R&C and more i'm missing.

Dead Rising's a good shout. I hope we see another one that makes better use of the hardware, but unless MS decide to invest in it again, I can't see it happening with Capcom in its current funk.

My point is that the Xenoblade brand is on the rise, & Nintendo would probably want to take advantage of that. It's not just about Shulk, it's about the franchise as a whole.

I think all of the fringe AAA franchises, the ones that have never really had the most loyalty to begin with

Infamous, KillZone, Fable, for sure.

I think Ratchet & Clank will say its last good bye.

The ones that get constant updates and reinventions are safe. Need for Speed, AssCreed, CoD.

The megafranchises aren't going anywhere either. Halo, GTA, Tomb Raider, anything Nintendo wants to make more of.

Final Fantasy and Silent Hills
Haha, it's already dead guys.

I'm not sure about Silent Hill yet. There was a news on a german gaming site stating that there is a rumor that MS bought the exclusive rights from Konami and Hideo + Guillermo will still be making the game. Announcement on E3 and release in March 2016.

About dead franchise:

I personally think that Killzone might be dead, but really hope not. MGS seems to be dead for sure.

EDIT: Seems like there are now some threads about that Silent Hill rumor and get destroyed as laughable and fake. Just as info.

I really hope we see another one. MS would be smart to keep putting money in them if that's the only way they'll get made. 3 was so good and the density of the zombies was nuts. Do a same day launch on PC with crossplay and mods for the PC version with 4 player co-op. But with State of Decay, they may just leave the series with Capcom sadly.

I really don't understand people saying Halo. This isn't a thread about which games are doing worse or are going down in quality but about games which won't survive this gen.
As long as there is Xbox there will be Halo. And if 343 keeps fucking up Msft would just reorganise the studio and give other people a shot with the IP. They won't just drop it

I can see Infamous getting one or two more games. Second Son seemed to do well enough. Killzone will likely fizzle out once Guerilla changes focus to a new IP, maybe move hands to a new studio. Fable will continue a slow death in spinoff games.

I honestly don't see Ratchet & Clank going anywhere. It's easily Sony's biggest all-ages franchise and the movie would have to be a colossal disaster in order for the games to go away. If anything, I see a new studio eventually taking over.

Nice try! That would imply Mirror's Edge was alive to begin with.

:(

i honestly dont care if asscreed or farcry dies or not. Ubisoft will keep releasing shallow, copy/pasted games over n over for a long long time, the name on the box makes little difference.

Assassin's Creed. Of the people I know who loved the series, only one of us bought Unity. I'm talking about 15 odd people who no longer care, including myself.

In fact, most last-gen series. I don't see God of War, Gears, inFamous, LittleBigPlanet or Dead Rising continuing.

Not sure if they will die but I want them to:

Uncharted
Far Cry
Assassin's Creed
Call of Duty
Metal Gear Solid

Enough's enough.

Call of Duty. It still sells a lot of copies, but it seems like it has trouble maintaining a decent player base even until the next yearly installment.

Call of Duty
I don't think we will see one of them "flop", but Acti are an All or Nothing company and have shelved franchises in the past for being past their peak performance.
Bring it back on PS5.

Assassin's Creed dying? Can't see this happening this gen, OP. Guitar Hero is the only very popular series that died rather quickly in the recent years and that's partially because it had many competitors and because Activision was getting too greedy trying to sell new expensive instruments.

Quite a bit of wishful thinking in this thread.

I get franchise fatigue, I really do, but CoD or Halo going away after this gen is not a likely scenario.

Everyone who suggests Metal Gear Solid "will die" this gen needs to consider the fact we've only had 2 main MGS releases in ten years, i.e. MGS4 & MGS5, later this year.

So MGS could go into hibernation for five years or so & emerge again later, who the hell knows - so it's not exactly comparable to the yearly Ass Creed (for example) releases which can cause franchise fatigue.

As for Halo dying, not likely. As long as Microsoft is still in the console business, Halo will endure.

I have my doubts Tony Hawk will continue past Pro Skater 5. I really like the games, including some of the more recent ones, but the early talk of this new one sounds quite bad and didn't look good graphically either.

Not as if the series has been thriving but I figure that'll be the last hurrah and they'll let the contract languish afterwards.
Extreme sports genre is dead as a whole anyway so that wouldnt be surprising

People believing in the possible death of MGS are basing it on Kojima's upcoming departure and Konami's move away from console gaming more than anything else. Franchise fatigue doesn't really have much to do with it.

Far Cry? Really? The series has only had 4 main games in ten years. Ubisoft's generic open world template needs to die, but Far Cry and even AC have so much potential for new games. Different settings and different time periods.

I think it's a mistake to believe MGS cannot exist without Konami, or Kojima - because the name itself sells massively. MGS is huge, there will always be some studio/dev somewhere who'd be willing to resurrect the franchise/purchase the rights, IMO. Considering MGS5 appears set for a possible great critical & commercial reception, the chances it'll be the last MGS are slim.

A 'stealth action' game I'm far more convinced is on the ropes is Splinter Cell, because its popularity has seriously plummeted in recent years.

Another one to keep an eye on is Gran Turismo, because the sales figures for GT6 weren't good compared to GT5.

Gran Turismo is still one of Sony's most successful franchises. It's not going anywhere.

As for Metal Gear, the best selling entry in the series was MGS2 back in 2001. MGS4 also sold really well but it released seven years ago. Although I don't think the franchise is done after MGS5, the series really isn't the juggernaut it once was.

This is a slightly contradictory post, because you can't claim Gran Turismo is immune whilst its sales factually plummet - yet claim MGS is possibly ripe for the graveyard of gaming franchises because "its best selling entry was in 2001". Guess what? Gran Turismo's best selling game was Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec, itself back in 2001!

Racing car games aren't as popular as they once were.

I think Sonic is on his way out. The bad ones no longer sell, he no longer has good handheld games to fall back on and I just don't see him having much of an audience on PS4 and Xbone.
