Why did western rock music die completely?

Just like everything else in our media. To push more minorities and women. Rock music was too much of a white guy thing. It's a shame really. Classic rock never goes away. The newest R&B song is old news in a few months.
But rock had plenty of chicks (a lot of riot girl bands in the 90's) and the guys embraced it. It's funny to think that, back in the day we had a natural kind of diversity that wasn't forced and everyone liked it.

Glad you brought this up. The death of MTV, the album experience (because of going digital), and streaming have all contributed to the idea that rock is dead. And the new metrics to determine success (streaming numbers, download numbers, YouTube numbers) are harder to analyze and accept as real success.

Yet, all of the newer rock bands I’ve gotten into were all found on YouTube, not radio or TV. Dorothy, The Pretty Reckless, Black Stone Cherry, Walk off the Earth, Gary Clarke Jr are all artists I discovered streaming.

Rock Radio stations are sad though. They COULD play the new stuff but they don’t. They don’t even play new stuff from legacy bands. It’s insane to me. It’s like they are trying not to attract new listeners.

This exactly. Start of last year in Melbourne I was coming home from seeing The Red Hot Chili Peppers (with George Clinton and Parliament/Funkadelic as support act... Fucking brilliant!!!)! On the way home, our mainstream rock station, Triple M, was playing all music by the Chili Peppers. I shit you not, it was basically all the mainstream stuff from previous albums and NOTHING from their latest 2 albums with then guitarist Josh Klinghoffer (which has some amazing songs on there).
It's almost like these rock stations don't want to play new stuff and just stick to the old stuff. I love the old stuff but without mainstream stations playing new rock, how the fuck will it ever enter the mainstream again?

Yeah, it makes me sick that radio only wants to play vintage stuff from bands that are still active. I mean, take Gary Numan for example, he has a shit ton of records and stations still play Cars (which is a fucking excellent song) but hi catalogue is vast and his latest sounds are very modern and it would be cool to hear them outside of YouTube and streaming.

Let’s not forget black people helped form rock into what it is today. Hendrix, Fatz, Berry, all the big band, blues, and jazz guys all contributed.

Women were there at the beginning too.

You could argue that it’s a Euro/American thing.. to an extent. It does have appeal internationally though so...

Just for shits and giggles sometimes whilst browsing Spotify, I'll go to a band I used to listen to from the 90's and see if they have done anything since the heady days. Sure enough, they've been releasing albums steadily up to today, yet we NEVER hear about them! Why? Start playing this stuff and get it into the mainstream. I would rather hear talented musicians any day of the week over sampled beats with a talentless frontman rapping/singing over the top... By the way, I do love rap music and it's not a dig a rap at all.

New Deftones album is heavy AF. Popular rock/metal bands from the 90's/2000's are still alive and kicking. Even Tool released an album last year lol.

If I had to put an exact mark on the timeline of when the mainstream moved away from "rock music" it would easily be the downfall of the Vans Warped Tour explosion of "scene" bands (2000-2010 basically). Any pop-punk or metal-core type band during that period was peak "rock music" whether you like it or not. If you listen to any of those bands' music post-2010 you'll scratch your head and wonder "WTF happened to their sound?" and that's largely due to the major record labels / music industry wanting more cool/gangsta 2007 "Soulja Boy" figures and less 2007 longhaired/emo "Asking Alexandria" type bands.
