Before anyone asks, I once heard it explained this way:

You overhear a couple talking to each other and hear one person call the other "sugar". These people share a certain bond, through personal familiarity and/or shared experiences, that allows them to relate to each other in ways that you cannot. This personal relation allows them to call each other by this word that would seem foreign if spoken by you. In fact, if you walked up to them and called one of them "sugar" they might take offense and think that you are making light of this shared experience that they have.

So, if you have to ask, just avoid the word. If you're on friendly enough terms with someone where they will not take offense to you using the word...then by all means use the word with them. Just know that the allowance is not universal and others might not appreciate hearing you say the word.​

I see "nigga" as the equivalent of a word we use pretty often "cerote". It can be used as an insult, as well as an alt form of saying "man". ie. "¡Te lo juro, cerote!" which would be translated as "I swear, nigga!".

It's offensive depending on the context, but don't drown in a glass of water, don't be a drama queen and understand "nigga" is a part of many people's lexicon.

i've noticed young people have seemed to lighten up on the use of that word. When I was in High School, if someone used the N-word who wasn't black, you ran for cover. Nowadays I hear white/black/hispanic/asian kids all call each other that like it's no big deal. I can't decide if that's a bad thing or a good thing.

Depends where you are. When I visit family in Detroit or Flint I see plenty of ghetto white dudes saying "sup my nigga" and getting love. They grew up just as poor and disadvantaged alongside the black people, and the right of using it as a term of endearment is offered. Obviously not every hood is like that, so be warned...

Pretty much the only young black people I've seen get bent out of shape over the word were asshole suburb kids trying to act hard, looking for an excuse to fight. Having actually been called a nigger by white people who weren't trying to be my friend (to put it lightly), I recognize there's a big difference between that and "nigga."

All that being said, ultimately it's black people's right to determine how we regulate who gets to say it, just as most races have terms they aren't cool with other people saying.

Nigga in general context can be interchangeable with "guy" or "dude".
