I was being dumb for going late at night where most of the crimes here happen like muggings and I was lucky for that not to happen to me.

Related to the OP, what that guy was saying was a weird blend of nigga as a generic "dude" and nigga as an insult. But you can definitely tell the difference between a redneck saying "nigger" and anyone else saying nigga, just thinking of my experience with XBL.

My black friends think I'm a pussy because I don't say or refer to them as nigga, no hard R! Just nigga. Like comradery. They expect me to know them well enough that I'm not afraid to offend them but I just feel kinda uncomfortable, it's slipped out a couple of times and they just laugh at me. I don't have an issue with them calling me Mexican as a joke(I'm American but parents are from El Salvador) but I just feel uneasy about nigga sometimes.
