Why do people get over protective for their favorite console?

Sunk cost fallacy?
Lack of other interests or hobbies?

Tbf I don't mind reading peoples defense on whatever "expansive gaming devices". It's a gaming forum after all.
It's the outright BS that annoys me.
"This [insert exclusive game/ feature or add on] is going to blow the competition out of the water. This company cares more than about money"
 
This happens with car brands as well. You invest in something, and you don't like someone else burning it down. Its pretty normal. I used to defend the PS3 because I liked it more than the 360 at the time, but the general trend was to burn the PS3 down. While I liked playing Warhawk etc online for free. Before that I owned a 360 that broke down twice, I had to sub to Live and had to purchase a wifi dongle as well as juggle with only 20gb of storage which ramped up the costs beyond what I paid for my Ps3 and an off market HDD. But I constantly read 360 is cheaper. I thought that was short sighted or at least, it wasn't what I experienced.

Nowadays I own both systems and I don't defend either. Both have their pros and cons. But if you have invested in a particular brand, I can see why you defend it against criticism because you enjoy it yourself.

Because they have low esteem to the point that someone else's opinion about video games is taken as an attack on them personally. Childish.
 
Men treat hobbies as proxies for warfare, so they naturally divide themselves into tribes. This is the case in essentially all male-dominated hobbies. Look at pickup trucks and sports.
 
I usually buy everything then I'm allowed to hate on whatever I like.

Have you ever proclaimed your love about something? A football team? A music band? A movie?

Did you ever say how awesome it is and someone responded that the thing you like really much is bullshit?

Did you feel a small sting when you heard your favorite thing being called crap?

That's your need to be validated kicking in.

Some people - actually, a LOT of people - perceive this as a personal attack. "Liking X proves that your taste is shit, ergo your opinion is shit, ergo you're stupid for having that kind of opinion."

Or maybe it's because humans are social animals, and when people have vastly different opinions from you, you instinctively hear that you are not fit to be a member of the pack. So, in order to 'protect' yourself, you try to call out the other person's opinion out in order to prove that HE's the one who doesn't fit in the pack, not you.

The fact that there are all kinds of people from all social layers who fall into this shows that this is a matter of wisdom, not knowledge.

It's not about just video games - it can happen with all kinds of things: pop culture, activities, hobbies, politics, sciences, the arts - heck, even people.

Then you must take a closer look on internet. When there are YouTube topics and news on gamingsites about consoles you can see that alot of PCMR guys a commenting in the comment sections that PC's are superior consoles are trash and consolepesants are losers.
Theyr is only one superior place to play according to the arrogant PCMR dudes....

IMO the only reason you don't see the open warfare you see here is because unlike GAF auto enthusiast communities are segregated from each other down to the model generation.

Get a Polymega! You can combine most of your retro systems in a single one! It also lets you copy your games to the HDD I believe.

Personally I have never done that. I sold my PS1 and some games for cash that I needed at that time (along with 1993-1998 era magic cards) and have kicked myself in the ass ever since.
I had well over 50 ps1 games , consisting of rpgs, fighters, 3d action adventure, and strategy games. Sold them for a few bucks a pop. Now those same games are worth a fortune. Not to mention the nostalgia factor.
I bought a ps classic and pc emulation to regain those memories if I want them.

I had my NES, SNES, Genesis all stolen from my 1st apartment by an x roomate who i kicked out. He broke in and stole all my old systems to sell and buy hardcore drugs with, and who knows what else.
Then my tg16 got stollen in my youth, while us 11 year olds were out playing in the woods. Came back to friends house and system was gone. The people (twins) who we found out did it moved across the country the next day :(

So yeah I understand the sentimentality of game systems. I still have my ps2 , ps3 and ps4 even though ps3 doesn't have wifi/bluetooth and ps4 is practically dead from overheating (and won't replace since prices have skyrocketed due to trendy streamer culture making these systems valuable. grrrr...)

We gain attachment. Same way I feel for old PC games.

As for warring with people over it. To some its just fun. Internet drama and team sports, similar to politics in a way.
Some take it too far. I like to watch but don't get involved. (unless people start talking shit about old school games graphics).

You really think there hasn't been some deaths and fights over ps5s , xsx, and 3000 series cards? Shit a whole truck of evga 3000 series cards was jacked (mob style) off the road last week. The whole reason we can't get consoles in stores (i have yet to get a ps5 due to scalpers and assholes and this policy) is because they don't want people fist fighting or rushing to get the few stock they have. Its already happened in many stores.

O my God...you must be blind as a bat...in every PS centric YouTube channel and commentsections of gamingsites there are hordes of them downplaying Sony calling PS gamers Ponies, downplaying the games, pounding there chest that the Xbox Series X is the best ever and so on. And they are promoting Gamepass as the second coming of Christ.
They are just as extreme as all other fanboys. There are not less of them than other fanboys.

Console waring isn't something that has ever interested me to be honest I just like the games regardless of platform. I do however find the memes highly amusing, some of the creativity put into them is almost genius. If you Google Console waring and look at images you'll see some funny stuff fired from all brands. 🤣

I see it more with Sony gamers. Also superiority complex, lauding everything done by Sony and Mark Cerny and shitting all over the place the rest of the threads. Like MS, Nintendo or any other eletronics company hire bad engineering e R&D teams.....

A Sony console is always better at everything, always. Even if the different architecture gives the console advantage only in specific scenarios it is always best at all times.
When PC gamers talk about resolution, then it's the reconstruction technics that are brilliant and that is stupid to render at full resolution etc. etc. I think many of the antogonizing PC gamers, come from reading this kind of bullshit over and over.
That's like saying in a car forum that you can drive your Fiesta in the Autobahn at 160 km/h while the guy in the M4 goes at 250 km/h, but you'll get to the same place either way, but that's really not the point is it?
Nor should it be in tech threads on a gaming forum. If it is superior, than it is superior, nothing wrong with that, no reason to immediately start bringing exclusives and that kind of stuff to the table as a gotcha card, and i suspect many pc gamers shoot the shit about sony exclusives coming for pc for that reason alone, piss off the other side, they don't really care about the games.

I say this as someone that play on pc only and subscribed for PSNOW for a year and my PC is very far from a top of the line.

I don't feel this is fair to turn my argument like that. Pc can do everything better but at a price of money, time and my sanity with all the bugs and launcher sometimes. It's not only about being the best semantically.
sony is out there still giving games like last guardian, returnal and death stranding a chance. On top of great hardware for the money.
just not fair.

not everyone wants 600hp bmw which can drive fastest laps if you spend time and money on it. I want automatic which will drive me comfortably. Shitty comparison the one with the cars :p because most of the games are the same on both platforms

That type of discussion has it's own merits on specific threads, actually you have a lot of threads about this game or that game, i'm not refuting anything, in fact i especifically said that i don't own a powerful pc, but because i don't own one doesn't mean that they're not out there and that they're not better, it's simple really. I was pretty straight to the point, if you enter a tech thread then talk about the tech.

It's a shitty comparison in your opinion, in my opinion is a pretty apt comparison, point being if you want to spend on a better car you can, if you want to drive a regular car that is automatic than you can, now don't go aroung trying to tell everyone that your car is better than the premium car, because it isn't. Also going by the logic of the last sentence, i hope you never talked shit about Xbox one, after all they're the same games on both platforms (Xbox one and PS4).

Also, if your pc causes such grief, just sell the damn thing. Why even have it?

You could say that about any group of gamers. People see it "more" in the groups they typically oppose.
 
1- it's the internet.
2- kids always take it personally and think everything written on the Internet about them , it's always about them , don't ask for a reason.
3- it's precious , not a piece of plastic , like when you mention the game cube n64 360 or ps2 , it's not just a piece of plastic, same thing goes for the newer consoles, it's gen y and z topic, they're just built different, you can't just pinpoint your finger towards those gen z players, you're just wasting your time by doing that endlessly.
