Why is Destiny so Compelling?

Loot!

I need ever better armour and weapons. I must be a godking who wrecks everyone's day when they dare cross my bath.

I want to bathe in the Fallen's blood, I want to make sweet tender love to a Servitor and I want to use the knights heads as a shitcan.

Playing the beta was as close as I've felt to playing Combat Evolved - but on a much greater scale. First of all, enemies don't feel entirely like bullet-sponges. But more importantly, the atmosphere is incredible. The setting, the music; even running around the hub world gets me excited. I think the final product will be amazing, if the beta is anything to go by.

The atmosphere, among other things.

1. I love anything having to do with space. Destiny has this.
2. I'm good with good gunplay. Destiny has good gameplay.
3. I like good customization. Destiny has this in spades. This is just a limited Beta. It's going to be pretty awesome collecting armor/guns/ships/power-ups/ etc etc
4. I can't wait to discover every little crevice, finding that ultra powerful foe and demolishing him.

My Hopes
I hope Bungie has a pretty good DLC pipeline adding new content/worlds and it's done at a decent price.
This, I skipped online ALL of last gen on PS360, will be the first time I actually delve into online gaming. Can't wait for the full game.

Has the game really improved from Alpha to Beta? I tried out the Alpha and I remember being incredibly bored by the concept and gameplay. Someone made the comparison to PSO and now reading all these favorable impressions I'm tempted to try one more time with the final release.

The only reason the game gets compared to PSO is because of the online structure. It has little else in common to PSO, so if you are expecting PSO, you will likely be disappointed.

Borderlands is the only comparison people should look at when deciding if they might like what Destiny has to offer and go from there. And judging by your "bored by the concept and gameplay" comment, I get the feeling you just aren't into this type of experience.

To be honest, you shouldn't play Explore mode for doing those small missions. You should play Explore to... you know, explore the areas itself.

correct, however there needs to be activities to do in explore as well. Random events didn't seem to happen often enough in alpha or beta. You can only explore so much of each planet. It's like having a huge open world with nothing to do along the way. You can explore most of the stuff while doing missions and kill two birds with one stone.

Great gameplay, awesome sound track, wonderful visuals and exciting skills tree all packaged together with a decent story makes a epic journey called Destiny.

In all fairness, Bungie saved themselves few millions on Marketing by simply opening up beta access to the game. Very very excited to play the final game.

I actually completed Borderlands 2, both solo and with friends. I'm even currently addicted to Star Wars: TOR what with all the MMO comparisons. I enjoy these types of experiences hence why I even bothered commentating in this thread hoping I could enjoy this game despite my first failed attempt.

Honestly I was very impressed by it at first during the Alpha, but the more I play I'm finding it....boring, I guess?

I can't put my finger on it. The 'exploration' parts feel empty and unrewarding, full of lame "quests" that don't have anything to them. The story is decent but feels disjointed in how it's presented.

But glad that other people are enjoying it. I'm probably still buying it, so I hope the full product changes my opinion.

Well, to me it's not, so I don't know either. Most people seem to have a hard time articulating why they like it so much, just that they like it a lot. Seems like a "more than the sum of its parts" thing, but YMMV

Maybe you have to be a Halo fan? I don't get it either. Nothing about it screams "must buy!!" at most it seems like a competent game, but nothing stellar. Certainly not the GOTYAY people make it out to be here.

I dont feel that it is, but i'll pick it up if friends get it. And if/when they drop it i'll do the same. I didnt really enjoy soloing in destiny alpha/beta.

I remember thinking Titanfall looked absolutely incredible but there was thread after thread of how manufactured the hype was and how it was really nothing special. Was a trip to see all those threads at the time and now I'm on the opposite side. Not calling the hype here manufactured at all, but I can honestly say I personally don't get the extent of it.

But maybe that's because I prefer my Halo without health bars and loot, and find my joy for that kind of thing in Borderlands and Warframe, both of which offer more for me personally.

Destiny plays well, is polished to hell and back again, and it'll have serious backing for a long time to come, so absolutely no worries there. But from what I've seen and played so far its missing personality and presence, big time.

Am still day one because a buddy swore me to it, so I'll have ample time for the game to grow on me ;p

I am curious how far the exploration goes in this game. How many worlds will we be able to explore? I always believe that we would get a huge universe in which we could freely travel and do stuff. Is there more know on this or is Bungie still keeping us in the dark?

Game seems absolutely fantastic, like all Bungie games.

The fact that there's hardly anything else to play makes it much more compelling than it would otherwise be.

The game is fun, yo.

It has everything I like. Cool art design, beautiful visuals, responsive controls, sweet music, variety in combat, variety in environments, variety in enemies, cool weapons, multiplayer that feels mostly fair, loot system, to name a few.

I'm also a huge fan of sci-fi and the idea of space exploration within our solar system. This game is right up my alley.

Plus, I get to pop and lock on the corpses of my dead enemies

What's not to like
I don't doubt that gif will sell a few copies of the game.

I'd say it's a must buy by default just because what the hell else is coming out worthwhile? Not much this year for PS4.

Plays well, has pretty art, has great music, is even better in co-op, and PvP is great with a good team. Plus full character customization and loot.

At its heart It's a super gamey FPS. I had huge doubts pre-Alpha, and I still have some issues with it, but I'm largely won over. It's fun.

People are thirsty to play something on thier new systems so of course they see this game as compelling. Personally I think it's a huge step down from Bungies work on Halo and am sad there's nothing like Halo on the market right now.

YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Do you realize you are dodging bullets?

You realize that right?

I was playing the other day and one thing that came to my mind is how well they capture one of the best parts of coop Halo - mostly the third one.

Those large maps where you are with your friends and enemies and Scarabs, etc. all over the place. That sense of scale and cooperation is all there and well crafted once again. I hope they add some air vehicles. I'm certain they have something to show about that. Hornets! I remember that snow level on Halo 3 with the two scarabs. Damn. There's even one Scarab-like robot on Iron Banner.

Love me some Scarabs. SCARAAAAAAAAAAAAABS.

It gives you the feeling of being part of the universe when you play, which is something all great MMOs provide. The visuals are outstanding. It just seems that everything is well done, nothing was half-assed or thrown in (and this isn't even the finished game). I also do not like FPS games with controllers, but bungie has the controls down so well I have no problem being accurate.

If we could somehow merge Destiny with Elite: Dangerous I think we would have a sci-fi game to play for the next decade.

i LOVED PSO, i really liked borderlands & halo, mash it the fuck together and it's just awesome. i'm more excited for september than i have been about anything since FF14

I've clocked up 12 hours on the beta so far. While the servers were offline, I finally decided to finally get round to playing Ground Zeros (I've been putting it off - not sure why). I think you can see where this is going.

It took me 55 minutes to clear. Granted, I was playing like an idiot shooting my way through the whole thing (for the record I never do this in stealth games, I think the Destiny binge made me a bit impatient and it was quite a relief not going for the usual perfect stealth run), but after that I had no desire to go and replay anything. In the UK I paid £22 on launch for this (PS4). After finishing it, Ground Zeros felt more like a beta test than destiny ever did.

This only served to make me appreciate Destiny more; currently destiny has given a lot of us more than just a taste of a game. It has, in my opinion been the greatest demo that has ever existed on a console.

It has created an online world that even with the level caps and the handful of mission; we are still trying to get everything out of it that we can. And most of all they have gained a tonne of goodwill with me - I definitely will not cancel my pre-order: they already deserve my money for more than ground zeroes ever did.

At this stage, all they need to do is unlock that moon level that they are teasing us with, have a few more public events and raise the level cap by 2. They probably don’t need any more marketing; people are losing their shit over this game already.

Could someone provide a frame of reference for PSO ?

I have never played that game but the impressions I get that it's very amazing.

Why is it so good and why is Destiny compared to it ?

Well it has a variety of things to do. Has some of the highest levels of polish I've seen in a game. Good visuals, great audio. And some of the best gameplay that easily rivals anything that even blizzard puts out. Its a great game.

As long as there's enough content at launch and a steady stream afterwards it'll be a hit.

The small squad based raids and social hubs basically. I haven't played it in years but I don't recall much similarities past that besides the rabid fanbase.

i think the PSO/red-mystery-drops || Destiny/green-mystery-drops along with gear progression feeds into the comparisons

Insomniac was really on to something when they made coop Resistance 2 and kinda abandoned it. I'm happy other games are doing group based exp mmo like fps games now. Borderlands was ok but not like Resistance 2 coop (2 player only). I tried Defiance recently and I like it a ton, though it's not FPS it still scratch the Resistance 2 coop itch. Destiny looks like the kind of thing that can hook you if you like loot games and joining people in raid type quests from what I understand.

I feel this way partly, because exploring does kinda get boring, as i may venture far and have nothing to show for it, detail is amazing, but its kinda lifeless/empty [animals?]. Also I would be happy to explore and find tips and old world info, build the picture, gather resources. Something. the story is fun , but when I can predict where enemies are in the map and the respawn in like a minute if i go check out the next encounter, [like ~200 m away in game] if I go back they are back lol. I prefer the drop ships, or if they can advance from an entrance to the map, etc.

Under map dark tunnels with freak-power bad guys with ohk weapons are cool. Game can feel like Demons souls in SPACE [tm].
actually there is more than passing similarities.

I like that I can have other players fight alongside me without having to go through the hooplah of going through a co-op mode or invite system.

I somewhat enjoyed it but it really brings nothing new to the table, not sure what they were trying to pull off by calling it a "persistent online world". If only they borrowed a few elements from No Man's Sky and made room for seemless piloting from one planet to another without any loading screens, only then would I say you've got something Bungie.

Blends Multiplayer (fps) + Narrative + Online Co-op with friends + MMO features all into 1 package. If you don't like the Multiplayer FPS then you can avoid it entirely. By turning in the materials for a voucher it apparently gives you credits toward those events anyway. (I think that is what I read) It is entirely possible to "level up" those rankings without participating directly.

Improvements;
It is a little offputting that there is no trading in the game. I know trading can be the downfall of games (see Diablo 3) but games like Diablo 2 never had that issue. I'd still like the ability to give a friend from my friends list a sniper or shotgun if I choose not to use those weapons. Even if they made the trading restricted to Friends list, and only people of the weapons level or higher it would still be good.

lol at the GZ bit.

lol at the GZ bit.

I think Destiny is going to get pretty played out in the long run. I think it is very fun for a short period and then will become mundane. If you like online FPS then it may have quite a bit of holding power. For those of us that prefer the offline single player or co-op games (see borderlands) I think the experience is going to be pretty limited. Right now the low level cap makes us want to keep playing. Once that is removed and you hit a hard cap I think that desire will be pretty diminished.

I'd love to be wrong though. Games fun with a couple friends doing strikes etc. I just wonder how many strikes there will actually be... and the "expansion" thing is kinda making me wonder how big the initial game actually is.

Seems to be a few weird 'why is destiny so awesome?' threads popping up today.

Any game that gets love and popularity will get threads like this.

Those kinds of threads agitates me since some people being grumpy and all like ''This game is not even that good. Why do you even like it?''

After the Alpha and the Beta that is currently running, Destiny deserves the love and the positive word of mouth it's getting.

Yeah, once I hit the hard cap...which will admittedly take me a decent amount of time with how little I get to devote to gaming nowadays, I'll be done until some expansion comes around. I think it'll be a blast along the way, but it's sort of MMO ish by design take on everything will have you feeling like you're doing the same things over and over in the same areas at times.

I'm just laughing at duder saying he blasted through GZ once, implying he didn't bother with anything else on offer, and saying it feels more like a beta. To each his own, just find it a goofy thing to say if you haven't even explored all there is.

I actually like the gunplay more than Halo. Then add Borderlands-esque loot, RPG-lite elements, intriguing co-op opportunities and what is hopefully a good story and it looks like they have a hit.
