Why should a non-Halo fan care about Halo 4?

Again, I never said I disliked Halo. The general impression I got from playing all the games in 2010 was that they were never able to fully repeat the quality of Combat Evolved, which I would probably put in my top five FPS campaigns ever (minus Library).

I think that game is nice, but I just don't car much for the lore which seems to be the center of all the marketing and coverage I've seen for Halo 4. I dunno I still can't find that much campaign footage from the game.

The E3 2012 trailer for H4 does a decent job of campaign footage stuff.

So far, all the media has let us know is that Cortana wakes Chief's slap happy ass up because their ship is going to shit and there is some bad mother fuckers who want to jack their shit up. Covenant apparently also are back and pissed off too.

Finally, Cortana is going cray cray because she's past the date A.I's are meant to be operational. Chief wants to get back to Earth to help her sweet blueberry nips out.

How can anyone not enjoy the sheer thrill of skimming across large maps in a ghost and splattering some poor bastard who is in the way.

From what I've seen, the ghost actually reliably runs over grunts and jackals this time, rather than just flying right over their heads.

I care about it because it looks to be taking what was great about the earlier titles, and then putting a fresh spin on them. I love the fact that it looks like some slight Metroid Prime elements have made it in, and the enemy encounter design looks quite nice. The art and production values look great and, after reading some interviews, I have a lot of faith in 343's vision for the game. Thinking of getting a 360 for it.

These kinds of "I don't like Halo" threads should not be allowed. For some reason, Halo is pretty much the only game in the industry that people are allowed to trash talk and I don't know why.

You are either a Halo fan or you're not. Its not the responsibility of others to convince you why you should like something. If Halo is not for you, move on to something else. If you don't understand why people like it, odds are you never will and that's that.

I don't see "Why should I like FF" threads.

Then again, great things will always have haters. It means you have made it with your game.

I thought you had to be at least 13 years old to register on GAF.

What a thread, will we see a series of these threads?
I'm wating for "why should a non-pokemon/bioshok/assassins creed/dead space- fan care about pokemon/bioshok/assassins creed/dead space"- threads in the next weeks.

Animal Crossing threads are always an entertaining read. A handful of gaffers are notoriously against the series's very existence.

I love Halo 1-3 but everything since then has been a big disappointment.

These are pretty much my thoughts. The numbered Halo games are awesome, but when they started having all these spin-off's (ODST, Reach, Wars, etc) the quality fell off too. I'm hoping with everything focusing back around what made me care about Halo in the first place (MC, Cortana, etc) it will be back to awesome.

I bought a 360 for H3 back in the day and haven't regretted it.

I really don't understand. You want to see more of the campaign, but you hate the lore?

I don't get this either. Even if you don't care about the story at all, Halo campaigns have in common that they feature very good to amazing gameplay.

At least that's what I'm looking forward to.

...and the mp.

LOL there are a handful of gaffers who are notoriously against the existence of any game you care to name.

Though yes, admittedly, it seems certain games are always guaranteed to draw them in like the Bat Signal.

Is that really all people care about when they play campaign? There's a GAME there too y'know.

It's difficult to discuss the game's campagin when it has yet to be officially released, but the new enemies and what's been shown of the level design looks great and should go a long way towards making 4 feel like a fresh experience.

Other than that, Spartan Ops will have plenty of campaign-esque missions for weeks.

I never got the Halo hype and probably never will.

Maybe it is because I've been playing FPS games on PC for ages and have higher standards.

can you provide some examples of fps games on pc that have led to you having higher standards in what you expect from first person shooters.

Have you played Halo 4's campaign to even know if it will recapture the quality of Combat Evolved? Seems like you are passing judgement of something just to avoid playing it all together. You are finding reasons to avoid playing the game, which contradicts the whole nature and arguments you have brought up.

I say you didn't need to have to make this thread, because you have made up your mind (albeit maybe unconsciously) and should not buy the game. I'm not saying that to be condescending though, just my honest opinion.

Why should anyone who is not a fan of series care to begin with??

I dont care about COD and it dosnt bother me.. no matter how hyped people seem to get.

I like halo, but let's not kid around that Halo's impact would have been a lot less if it was released on PC like the majority of other FPSes at that time. The primary reason Halo was so successful was because nothing came close on consoles. On PC it would be competing with
Half Life, Unreal Tournament, Quake 3, Battlefield 1942, Counter Strike, Tribes 2.

See things like Battlefield having 64 players on PC since 2002, and 10 years later consoles still don't have it. Or mod support in UT and Counter Strike.

You shouldn't care. The single player experience isn't fantastic by any stretch of the imagination - I'm not sure an FPS ever will be.

People play Halo for multiplayer. If you don't care for that, then you shouldn't care about Halo.

Halo 4 doesn't have Firefight.
Because it looks kind of like the Metroid Prime 4 we'll never get.

Definitely some Metroid Prime influence in this game. 343i has a few former members of Retro on their team.

I can't think of anything other than deathmatch shooters. There's Half Life, but that's more puzzle- rather than shooting-oriented.

Ha, maybe I do...

I'll be cool with it as long as Cortana doesn't take over the screen constantly, slowing down the player to say such important things like, "I am your shield, I am your sword".

It's a game first and foremost. I love (90% of) Halo 2's narrative but it certainly has the worst campaign gameplay of the series.
I don't know, man. It certainly hits the lowest lows, but its highs are at the very least above anything in Reach. It's an inconsistent mess, but at least it's an ambitious one.

UGH! The fight was finished! We finished the fight! What the hell was left for Halo dude to finish!? >:|

That's my major problem with Halo 4, Bungie pretty much closed the chapter on the convent and chiefer's saga. I don't need more chiefer's with Metroid Prime enemies. :/

Space Nuns. That's reason enough to buy Halo 4.

It's not direct footage, and it's Spartan Ops footage not campaign, but you can have a look for yourself at one of the vehicle missions that seems very similar to Halo(H:CE)/The Ark(H3).

Sure, but is that the draw of an impressive FPS? I tend to think halo's sandbox gameplay nature is what made it the huge success, that it is in regards to gameplay. What was that PS3 game.. MAG? I think? 254 players or something? Surely doesn't make 64 player matches look unimpressive on PC.

These things don't automatically make PC shooters better than console ones. I can't think of a single PC FPS with mechanics as tight and focused as Halo's.

Are those actual spoilers? If so, please keep them to the spoilers + speculation thread.

No one is saying you should care about Halo 4 OP, as long as you don't troll it, then what you like or don't like shouldn't bother anyone else.

It's funny you say that when a game that started on the PC (CoD) adopted so many mechanics from Halo. =p

Why should i like videogames if i don't like videogames?! I only ask because i have an account on a gaming forum and must know why i'm even here in the first place!

On topic;
I really don't know what to tell you. Halo 4 is everything a Halo fan would want. As for a non halo fan, if you'd like to try to like halo (again, in your case), This game looks fantastic graphically and plays smooth, like creamy chocolate pouring onto your favorite flavor of ice cream in the middle of a beautiful 73 degree summers day.

Sorry, I figured spoiler tags for spoilers was sufficient.
Cool, thanks. I'm no authority on the matter, but I know a lot of people would appreciate it if spoiler discussion were kept to the spoiler thread. At the very least, let everyone know if something you spoiler tag is actually a spoiler, since so many people use the black bars just for jokes.

My biggest advice is to tune out what other people or marketing thinks about the game, with that you go in without preconceived notions. I do this for all the games I play new and usually I find it more enjoyable.

How is that funny? CoD adopted so many mechanics from Halo when they started to release it on consoles as well. It only makes sense, they adapted their product to the target platform.

I played the first two Uncharteds and decided on my own that Uncharted 3 was not for me so I skipped it. Too late for the OP to do something like this.

I'm no Halo fan, even if I did play all the main games. I only really like CE and Reach but Halo 4 is looking pretty good to me and I'll be playing it just like I did any other Halo. I'll just wait and see if I'll like it like those two or like I disliked Halo 2 (by far the worst imo) and Halo 3 (mediocre). Halo's got a pretty decent track-record and I don't feel like I've played too much of them (I don't play mp).

Also note that I don't give a shit about the story and "lore" of Halo. I just play them because I like the expansive areas and gameplay mechanics. At its best it's a rock-solid shooter, which is enough for me every once in a while.

I thought it was still considered a PC franchise even though the game was releasing on the 360 as well. It wasn't even until later in development that we knew for a fact it was coming to the 360, before then it was all speculation.

I just thought it was silly to say Halo wouldn't have made as big of an impact if it was released on the PC due to the competition. IIRC plenty of people weren't happy that the game was on the xbox instead of the PC.

Though, I guess he has a point that it may have been less influential if it was released on the PC instead of the xbox.

Guess what ? I actually think it was the first series where i actually enjoyed both single player and multi player from the same game which many other games i feel lacked those days. Though most games were either SP only or mp only

It's the first big Halo title being handled by 343i and not Bungie so I think it's worth trying this one out just to see their take on the franchise. Maybe it will click with you and maybe it won't, but at least if it doesn't now you won't have to make the same thread for Halo 5 and 6 in the future.
