Why the hell are memsticks so expensive?!

I recently purchased a 2GB compact/II Microdrive card for $99. It fits in every compactflash device I have. It's great. I also, because I had a bit of spare change, purchased a 1GB compactflash flash for 60 dollars. Needless to say, I am set as far as flash memory cards and whatnot.

I'm very, very interested in buying a PSP. In fact, I'm sure I'll get one launch day if notsoon after. So I go to search for a 2GB memstick, the largest available size.

$230 is the cheapest I could find... $230 BUCKS!

That's a bit too much for 2GB, so I down it to 1GB... and the cheapest I could find is $115. Wow. I could buy 2 1GBs and save money over a 2GB.

So is Sony rediculously overpricing Memsticks or is there something incredible in a Memstick where I can justify paying incredible prices for it?

Also... are there any memstick -> Compact flash adapters? :D :D :D

That's off the canadian site, but in short: yes there are.

Abominable - The psp takes the Memory Stick *DUO* format and I don't think that goes up to 2 gig yet. So you were probably looking at the standard Memory sticks. Duo is less than half the physical size of a standard MS and I believe they only go to 1 gig ATM.

The Duo size Memory Sticks will fit in that adapter that IntestineBoy linked to, but not the standard Memory Sticks.

Yes, pricing is steep compared to CF and SD cards, but has been coming down steadily. There are sites online that advertise 1 Gig MemStick Pro Duos for less than $100, like Zipzoomfly, but they are heavily backordered right now.

$115x2 =$230. How is that saving you money?

I want to lay you right now... I'm going to sell some stuff to buy that right now.

I really, really wanna spread my legs cross-continents for you.

$70... wow.. I'm really in love with you. You know that, right?

That price is clearly an error on the site. The cheapest you should be able to get a 1 GB card for is about $125, more likely $150 if you find them in stock anywhere.

Where are the compactflash-in-memstick adapters?!
Still waiting for someone to break the laws of physics.
CompactFlash is like 5 times the physical size of a MS Duo so that kind of adapter would be quite impossible.

Because CFs are by far the largest physically, you have adapters from pretty much any other format into CF though.

Couldn't you have a reader for the CF, which then ends in a cord and at the end of the cord, a Duo-type output? Use your head :lol

Just fold the compact flash card about five times and stuff the fucker in there. Should work.

I think the market is going to go through a supply and demand phase.
Thanks to the mulimillion psp sales and the increase in memory stick demand, prices will temporarly go up. Until production increases, in which prices will go down to lower then before levels, we will unfortunatly have to deal with some price fluxes. On the bright side, since sandisk and others are making memory sticks now, they could cause some price wars in the future.

hmmmm... well, last time i looked, memorystick just had a really really high transfer rate, so that's probably part of the price. it's also a lot smaller than CF...
