Wii U Games 2015

Hm, does this article more or less mean Mario Maker might see a delay from Q1?

I'm hoping for Yoshi in March, but I have a feeling they would have announced that by now...

I think that article is kind of wrong. It says

Nintendo previously announced that Yoshi’s Wooly World was slated for a broad 2015 release window when it showed off the dinosaur's new adventure at E3 2014. Nintendo made no mention of the upcoming Wii U title's release schedule since then, but today the company revealed it was on track for an early 2015 debut.

This isn't accurate, though. While Kirby was a broad 2015 release at E3, YWW was always slated for H1 2015. So, this is just a reiteration. I would imagine we'll still see if in H1 2015 if Nintendo's saying this, although the article is especially odd without any clear source that I saw. I also expect to see Mario Maker in H1 still as well, and Splatoon.

Not a bad year!

Quite a decent list for not having a major 3d mario.

Mario Party 10 >_<
+mario maker, starfox probably and maybe yoshi but I don't think so, looks more like something suited to handheld for me.

Splatoon looks decent though. Not sold on Zelda yet.

I'm somehow super hyped for Mario Maker, hoping to get release dates soon.
Oh and NoE still has to compensate us for the Kirby/Pokémon/Toad delay >:(

They did. We got Fantasy Life a month early and Smash a week before Japan and we get Wave 3 amiibo earlier than the US.

Feel like the OP should include a very minor mention of the fairly solid intel we have on the HD remaster of a classic nintendo game. What is the latest word on that anyway?

Such an awesome and exciting year for Wii U ahead! Hope Nintendo can manage to release them on a regular basis like 1 per month or so. Pleaaase no more 3+ month droughts :( My most anticipated games are Splatoon, Yoshi, Xenoblade and ZELDA! Even though Kirby and TRC looks amaaaazing as well, glad it's coming early on february.

I could be mistaken, but I don't think we ever had any such solid intel. :(

ETA: dang Moonster should've known you had that covered!

ooof, got me right in the dreams :(

F-Zero GX HD/Sunshine HD

#believe

Replayed Sunshine earlier in the year and still play GX. Preach.

Nothing to support my idea, but I would assume Nintendo picks a franchise they are about to release something new in...Metroid Trilogy HD before new Metroid, etc or Galaxy 1/2 HD before Galaxy 3?

A man can dream.

Has there been a first person Mario game or why do you state the obvious? All 3D Marios are third person games. Even 2D Marios are :D

Well, 2D Marios have fixed side camera and latest 3D World has fixed isometric-like camera angle. By third person camera I mean it follows the character from behind. Agh... you know what I meant!

Nintendo hasn't remade Sunshine because it would take too much work to make it a modern Nintendo quality 3D game. ;__;

Yea that's what I keep thinking about, how would you just remaster it without remaking half the game since it was so flawed. Plus, would it really be fun (let's get real here, this is a key thing for them and should not be overlooked) to use FLUDD without analog triggers?

How is the Wii U for playing Netflix? Should I unplug my PS3?

I have never used it first-hand but from what I have been told it works well enough but has some odd issues from Netflix not giving it proper support.

Someone with first hand experience will have a better answer, but I can ask my friend about it next week.

I'm glad you knew I was at least half-serious. I dunno. I tried SMS again not too long ago. I wish I could get into the game but I've tried it so many times now and I just haven't been able to. If they don't remake it I'd like to try my copy again. It's just...hmm. Such an odd game and such an evolution of SM64 in what would be today considered I think some of the least "pure fun" ways that Nintendo has been going for in regards to their 3D Mario games. If SMS is the worst evolution of SM64, Galaxy is the best. (I might like 3DW pretty much just as much as the Galaxy games, though.)

GC controller support solves the controls, and on the other controllers they can come up with something.

Why do people have issues with Sunshine? It's one of my fav games of all time. :(

The GCN controller as it stands only works for SSB and is in limited supply. You can't expect people to have an unusual tertiary controller for the best control scheme. So I don't think Nintendo would go for that. As you said, they could do new and different control schemes for other controllers. I think that's conceivable.

The problem is that unlike Wind Waker, which follows the classic 3D Zelda structure and while it has some structural gaffes of its own, holds up very well today from a gameplay standpoint, Mario Sunshine has an unusual more unusual cult following because it iterates in an arguably offbeat way on the SM64 formula. I understand the game has its fans, and I really like the high concept of it, but the game itself has a very unusual idea of what it means to play a Mario game.

The platforming itself is based on agile trickery in a 3D space in a way none of the other 3D Marios require. SM64 is forgiving with its more minimalist 3D platforming, the Galaxy games have the spin move and gravity, and 3DL/W offer power-ups to help soften the steeper inclines of the learning curve. Conversely, SMS has a confusing-to-control brief water burst to help you get your bearings, and as an idea just itself it's interesting but for me and a lot of others always felt like this clunky add-on to gild the lily of Mario's smooth moveset. Whereas a Tanooki suit for example serves as a helpful platforming aid, I think for a lot of people F.L.U.D.D. was just cumbersome. The levels were highly mission-based in a somewhat obtuse way compared to its predecessor and successors, and in their focus on what would be largely one-off, more experimental and less intuitive settings, characters and play style, I don't think they garnered a strong fanbase.

It's probably the least-played 3D Mario of the mission-based games, and IMO it represents a fascinating experiment from Nintendo as was often the case in their second generation of 3D games where they tried to figure out what it means to make a fun 3D game once the novelty of a game just being in 3D (and being able to just explore a 3D world) had worn off a bit, so they were trying to suss out what would be the core of "fun" in 3D. I think Nintendo was able to answer this question for themselves with much greater clarity in the Wii era, even putting motion controls aside, with a plethora of complex but specifically arcade-y or "fun-focused" experiences that put the onus more on the developer than the player for providing and making the fun in the game. I'm thinking of stuff like Sunshine which plops the player in a world where they have to figure out their own comfort and understanding and fun vs. games like Galaxy, Epic Yarn, and Super Paper Mario which provided a specific and focused experience that was more defined by the developer. I'm trying to articulate something here that's hard to put my finger on, but hopefully that makes some sense.

Unplug that PS3. I've been using it and have no problems. Off-TV support is a wonderful thing.

This is a great post, Max! Well said.

But Mario isn't even the best 3d platforming series. Banjo Kazooie is number 1 and ratchet and clank is 2.

lol okay

I just like when my platformers are focused on platforming and exploration while having a tight design. Banjo Kazooie has a ton of collectables and that is fine but it is not what I like about platformers. I haven't played a Ratchet and Clank game though, just tried a demo on the PS3 and didn't like it, I should give it a try again if I ever get one again.

I use it all the time. The main problem is that after 5 hours the battery in the gamepad dies and you can't control netflix anymore. Sometimes the subtitles freeze, and you have to turn them off/on again. Other than that, it works very well. You can swap the screen from tv to gamepad if you want. They probably should add a feature that you can browse movies/series on the gamepad while a show is playing on the tv... because that's not possible atm.

Thank you! I feel bad a bit because I don't want to rain on other's enjoyment of Sunshine, but it's antithetical to what I personally want from a Mario game so I'm glad Nintendo has done a shift away from that kind of 3D Mario.

Why don't you leave the GamePad on the charging cradle?! Or plug it in if you have a basic set. That avoids the whole issue.

A lot of games are in my wishlist but the most refreshing game (last appeal) will surely Splatoon.
If they made this game with smash bro characters, it would be epic.

And I hope that a lot of great indie games (as shovel knight, pullblox or steamworld dig) will be released this year.

Yeah, you don't think i would have thought of that had i had a power outlet near my couch? :-) I'm not going to run an extension chord along my living room. And i'm not going to get up out of the couch, walk to the tv stand where the charging cradle is every 25 minutes to start a new episode. So, unfortunately it's not an option.

Which brings us to the issue of the next episode not autoplaying... i distinctly remember in the very beginning trying out some episodes of Orange is the New Black, and the new episode actually DID start autoplaying. It worked for a few episodes, and since then, it never worked again.

Ratchet and Clank has so little to do with platforming it shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as Mario.

I wouldn't mind them taking a little from Sunshine. Sunshine's level design isn't perfect, but I do like how some of the levels are very open and allows for more explorative platforming. I wouldn't want the whole game to be like that, because Galaxy's set a bar for quality in how they moved you through levels, but exploring a space and figuring out where the stars are offers an interesting way to play 3D Mario.

but.... you obviously have an outlet by your tv... isn't the gamepad charging cable long enough to just plug it in there and have the controller next to you on the couch? o.o
