Wii U Pro Controller announced - X360pad design, no screen, "for multiplatform games"

Not read the whole thread.... does this confirm black wii u?

No.

I'm guessing the primary application would be local multiplayer with traditional controls?

Even third party multiplatform games are going to use the screen/touch controls in minor ways, I assume.

This is cool but...why the are both analog sticks up the top and the buttons below it? It'll feel weird doing it like that after being so used to the 360 and PS controls.

I just hope that the damn thing is mandatory because I know a lot of people do not want to buy an entirely new controller just to play multiplatform games.

Is that a USB charging socket at the top of it? I sure hope so: was so tired to replacing AA batteries in the Wii remote and having the classic controller chained up to it.

The button placement is fine. Having booth sticks on top will make it more comfortable for dual analogue games, and slightly less comfortable for when using dpad and or face buttons; but it shouldn't be any worse discomfort than when using the right stick on a 360 controller or either stick on dualshock. It makes sense in the current market even though most of the games I personally prefer tend to use the face buttons more than the right stick. But 2D platformers will support sideways wiimote anyway so that won't be a problem.

Symmetrical design is so much better than two analogues at different positions.

Howver the buttons do look to be in a wierd position.
Eh. I was never a fan of the dualshock's layout. My left thumb wanted to rest on the d-pad when most games require the analogue stick. Have to see how my right thumb copes since it does have the advantage of already being used to moving about more.

So are there going to be endless copy cat jokes about Nintendo and its ripoff now or is that reserved only for Sony?
Can't copy the copycat jokes. This is also why I refuse to use the "No Games" jokes for any other system but the PS3. Fresh material is need for every new generation.

Couldn't they just used this... ???
Others have mentioned the lack of features, but releasing a new controller is also a good way to get people to pick one up.

Felt like a cheap and light piece of plastic.
Really happy with the new design, hope it's a lot weightier.
I kind of like the light feel of the CCPro, but I can understand why people like a little weight to their controllers.

Hope Nintendo took some notes from Sony's PS Vita(and original DS) and made the D-pad clickable(and hopefully the rest of the buttons too).
Arn't buttons clickable by default or are you referring to clicky vs spongy?

No. Digital triggers = fail for racing games.
I play Mario Kart just fine with digital triggers.

So Nintendo includes a traditional controller inspired by the x360 one and Microsoft copies the Wii U by adding tablet integration.

Nintendo not big on rumble? Have you forgotten them bringing it to the home with the N64 pak before anyone else did? Obviously so.

N64 = rumble pak optional. Was never integrated into controller.
Gamecube = mono rumble (everyone else had dual rumble by this point)
Wavebird = no rumble
Wii Remote = horrible rumble
Nunchuk = no rumble
Classic Controller = no rumble

I firmly believe that rumble is not a large part of Nintendo's identity. Just because they 'invented' it doesn't mean they care that much about it.

Matt said:
But yes, it has rumble.
I don't think this has been announced, but I hope so. DS3/360 rumble parity would be a good thing.

Even if the GC has mono rumble, it feels really good IMO. The Upad will probably have lackluster rumble, but I hope the pro pad brings the thunder. I've always been a fan of rumble, ever since riding Epona in OoT. Games just feel so much better.

Good work nintendo!
Making a last generation console focusing on the tablet and then giving players a traditional pad saying that the tablet will be futile and too heavy for long sessions is pure genius.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO.

FOREVER!
I've always wanted someone to try putting the right stick up top. There's really no reason to have it down there.
Well people like the 360/GCN layout because the primary stick and buttons are in the primary position. Now the buttons are in the secondary position.

GC controller sucked
According to a recent thread GAF loves both the 360 and GCN controller. So much for it sucking.

So are N fans upset that Nintendo blatantly ripped off the 360 controller. Have they lost their honor?
Yes. Nintendo shot themselves in the foot and should commit sudoku.

Can't speak for everyone, but I'm not too happy. The wii remote was a great controller, and I feel like this new one is taking steps backwards just to please lazy third parties and hardcore types.
Well the WiiU still supports the Wiimote but I wonder how many new games will take advantage of it. A lot of demos simply show it being used in the NES position.

We've been asking for a better Wii controller, I guess an off 360 copy is better then what we had before. Now we just need some hardcore games announced on Tuesday...
You have Super Mario and Shooter. What more do you need?

The wii controllers already work with PC via Bluetooth. This should be no different.
But they might use some funny technology like OnLive and make their controller unusable with a PC. Why OnLive did this I have no idea. So much for my £1 PC controller.

It does. I'm glad Nintendo is realizing the reality of the gaming world and how resistant people are to motion crap.
Motion != pointer control. Jeez. It's been how many years since the Wii's launch and people still get them muddled.

Hope it can be used with the new Zeruda. Hope it can be backwards compatible with Skywards Flop so I can actually finish the game.
What? A motion based games doesn't magically work with a non motion controller.

Earlier in the thread someone posted that Microsoft has copyrighted the position of the buttons and sticks in their controller.
What about the GCN controller? I'm sure there are ways around those patents.

Most people will probably do fairly well with the base package, which will include a uPad and a Wii Remote + and Nunchuk. Buying Pro Controllers to round out your collection for local multi may save you money, but otherwise it's pointlessly differentiated from the uPad.

I honestly don't expect them to include the Wii mote and Nunchcuk in the base package.

I honestly don't expect them to include the Wii mote and Nunchcuk in the base package.

It's hard to say. I can see why they would as it opens up other play styles as standard

We have already see the Wii remote being used in conjuction with the Wii U Gamepad in a golf game. I'd imagine they'd want that functionality as standard.

..and if they also want the Wii U Gamepad to function as an Eyetoy/PS Eye style camera for certain games(seems likely considering how they positioned the controller in the video chat scene)...then they may want to include a Wii remote for greater interaction in augmented reality titles.

I can't believe people seriously think you'll need to buy/bundle this just because the thread title says it's for multiplatform games.

Obviously they want 360 dudebros to not be alienated and mention it as such but...

...Maybe the OP should include basic common sense statements like that the tablet gamepad has all the same inputs and can be used just as well in any game while also at the very least giving you better touch access to all the OS stuff shown in the presentation even if the developers didn't make any special touch based functions within the game.

Which this controller won't affect their decision to do so as it's still not the default controller every WiiU owner will have and they always had the option of not using the touch screen for anything or anything meaningful based on their own game design.

You'll only really need this for multiplayer (where applicable, other games may support the Wiimotes so many people already own) and you were always bound to need something like this as we already knew at most we'll get 2player tablet support, if that.

I wonder if this Pro thing includes the microphone though. Then again, you'll probably need the tablet pad closeby anyway, to start the system and what not, so it could double as a Wii Speak type thing like when the hipster dude video chatted with the old dude.

As for bundling a Wiimote, I don't think they need to considering how well that system and its controllers sold.

PSSST!
You are not supossed to write about the secret deal Microsoft and Nintendo made!
;)

whoops. i didn't mean to spoil today's conference megaton.

to be honest though, i don't think Nintendo can keep releasing consoles which rely on the novelty of a controller which can be rather easily replicated as add ons by other manufacturers (and on more powerful machines :P).
MS and Sony learned the trick and they'll try to show people that you don't need to buy a new console to have motion controllers or tablet integration.

Honestly, I don't think the stick/button placement is a big deal. You can pretty much simulate it on a 360 controller, and it seems like it will work pretty well to me. No better or worse than the left stick/Dpad thing.

Fat and sexy like the 360 controller. Sony better copy next gen.

Seriously, people corporations copy and it is often for the best when things are done right.

I woke up and I still feel the same way after a good night's sleep. The Wii U Pro feels kinda redundant with the same symmetrical design as the Gamepad(tablet). It's definitely the preferred choice for long sessions since it's smaller, but those face buttons really are in a bad spot. It'd be okay if our thumbs pointed sideways, but they clearly don't. Our thumbs naturally point upwards and it results in our thumbs naturally resting on the face buttons for the DS3 and 360 Pad. This is what makes playing shooters with constant face button action(QTE events like Prototype/God of War, and item retrieval like Bioshock) more comfortable. Smash may also be more uncomfortable on this thing with the face buttons and D-pad on a lower symmetrical level.

I know it's very unlikely, but I hope that we do see a high quality third party solution with a staggered 360 configuration. I also hope that they pack in a Wii-mote for the Wii U. Lightgun(these really need the Wii-mote) games and pretty much all shooter games can only benefit from pointer functions on the side. I'm not going to force motion controls down anyone's throats or take away their precious standard controllers. I just want the option for me.

PS:
All you guys complaining about Nintendo "copying" or "surrendering" need to stop trolling. Everyone knows that the 360 pad is damn near the best standard controller ever made(besides the D-pad). Moving towards that design for standard controllers is something that EVERYONE(especially Sony) should be doing. Move, Wii-motes and Kinect should certainly still be supported.
Great. Now get rid of that awkward looking power button.
Now you are just reaching. There is no reason to freak out over that button unless you are handling your D-Pad and right analog stick with extreme pressure/anger... which is not healthy.

This is hilarious - they took the feedback to heart.

Bonus points for using the PlayStation stick alignment - Negative points for awkward button placement.

It looks better than the 360 controller, besides the AWFUL button placement. At least they aren't using offset analog sticks - something that I'll never understand.

Lots of people said the WiiUpad was really comfortable, so I see little reason to pay extra money for this controller, though I'm sure this being Nintendo, it will be the best conventional controller ever.
