Wii U Speculation Thread 2: Can't take anymore of this!!!

Wow, the Phil Fish thread really eroded my soul... glad I got out of there when there was no more point to be made.

Glad to see that Nintendo is going balls-out with this middleware stuff. Do other platform holders give out middleware to developers, or is this a new thing?

According to the article linked above, it's a first (or at least very rare)

So I'm guessing middleware is kinda like advanced animation, AI and framerate stuff, and it's a first or very rare to be given out be the console's manufacturer?

So are there any events in between GDC and E3? Any Nintendo conferences or events where we might get some scraps of info? How often do they do those Nintendo Direct conferences?

There's a PAX, isn't there?
But that's usually just a game show, so I wouldn't place any firm footing.

Nintendo Direct seems to be bi-monthly, so I suspect to see a new show in April with some focus on their last 3DS/DS/Wii output.

Beast probably costs more than all the other tools combined; I bet that's all there is to it. Even though Nintendo isn't giving out licenses for it, that wouldn't mean there's anything preventing devs from using Beast/erNsT to create light maps - or any other tool for that matter.
Hmm, I doubt that's it, because Unity, a game development engine for Indy developers, has Beast light mapping built-in. If anyone would cheap out on included middleware it would be Unity, not Nintendo.

Sorryo for the question, but it's very hard to follow the flow of this thread! :D

Did you already see this interview with Dyack?
I saw some tips few days ago about a sequel of a desired title, but this seems a little bit direct in my opinion...

ED is easily one of my favorite gamecube games but I'd be wary of getting too excited about a game by silicon knights any time soon. Too Human was mediocre and apparently their X-men game was outright awful. That said, they did make Twin Snakes and ED which were great, so it's still possible they could put out something of quality.

Thanks for the interview! Really loved ED on Gamecube. I believe Nintendo still got some sillicon knight stocks but I am not sure :P Let's hope for a wiiU version!

So, I know it's getting to be a daily thing with me and this question by now, but...
Anything happen?

But I think the showfloor is open today, so we can expect some blurry videos taken with mobile phones from the 90's.

Eternal Darkness didn't even sell half a million and SK's track record has been so poor recently, I doubt Nintendo would even touch them.

Yeah, not surprising considering his company is in the shitter.

Yes, they are in trouble.
And this could be the reason why they looked for a collaboration with a big publisher as Nintendo that, on the other side, needs (in my opinion) to collaborate with western developers.

I wouldn't be surprised if Dyack went on his hands and knees and begged nintendo to let them work on a ED game after their last few flops. At this point, they may be on a cold streak, but nintendo probably wasn't planning on doing anything with that franchise anyway, and if it's being funded by the canadian government, why not give it to them? Of course, they'd have to publish it, but it might worth it to have another buzz worthy title on their upcoming games list. I'm sure nintendo isn't unaware of ED's cult status.

Really? I thought it sold more.

Didn't you hear? GameCube was the kiddeh, so no one bothered to own one so they could play it.

Anyways, if anything, I could see an Eternal Darkness remake first, THEN a sequel. All Nintendo has to do is get another developer on it, since Nintendo owns all the rights to the sanity system and whatnot, re-license the voice acting (or re-do it, whichever) and get the same musical score, then re-release to make a sequel more relevant. As it stands now, the series needs a stronger fan base than it has.

I honestly don't see Dyack being involved, except maybe as a story consultant with Ken McCulloch. And that's a big maybe.

The other thing is Dyack said he's working on one of their most requested titles...last time I checked, they have one requested title.

Well, whatever the reason they didn't include it, it isn't because Wii U won't be using light maps - which was the main thing I was addressing. Nintendo could very well have their own thing in place, something that uses custom features of the hardware, perhaps. That would be wonderful. But there's nothing stopping a company that owns a Beast license from using its light maps for their Wii U projects. They also didn't include Maya, but you can be sure Maya will be used for assets.

I don't agree.

Retro is talented enough to create an own Horror IP, I'm pretty sure of that.

the question is: will nintendo let retro work on a new IP?

i think we have more chances of see them working on an existing horror ip, but i'd love your idea i just don't think it has many chance to happen.

To be honest, I'd love to see Retro do a horror game.
Maybe like a mix of RE and Silent Hill, yeeeeeeeeeeah.

I like you.
I would be even happy about a slightly darker Metroid. Hell, I would be even happy with anything from Retro.

Retro created several games for Nintendo which sold amazingly good. They've proven that they are one of the best right now.
I think after a few more Nintendo franchises they will be allowed to create a new IP, BUT I'm going to assume that Nintendo would look over the project all the time and give some feedback. lednerg posted a superb article about Retro, I don't find it anymore.

Edit: Found it! This explains so much about Retro and why Nintendo hesitates to let them do their own thing.
