i much prefer the gamecube control method over the wii control, as far as metroid prime. perhaps i'm just accustomed to the sticks, but mp3: corruption wasn't very fun to control.

I feel the same way. The Wii controls were very responsive and more flexible but that just meant that Retro started to get FPS aspirations when designing Prime 3. The game gained a heavy action spin and overall I didn't like how I was starting to see influences from flavour of the day shooters creeping into a game with which these elements did not resonate at all. Such as the space marine characters etc. etc.

Also I just really like the way the Gamecube Primes control, they had quite a unique control scheme, took a little time to get used to but once it was part of your lower brain it was just very fun and deliberate. Not really something you saw any other games do. Today it will be impossible to have a game with a similar control scheme what with dual analog controls having become a hallowed dogma by overuse.

Discussion has just slowed to a crawl...

Next they're going to tell us that Metroid Prime 4 won't be using pointer controls.
Giving me absolutely no reason to buy one until I can get it used and cheap.

:/

Years of bitching about controls makes Nintendo go conservative.

I for one am shocked.
This is gonna be even worse than how fans unintentionally killed Windewaker style Zelda on consoles in favor of 3D Zelda...

Best part if Wii u will be potential for dual analog, pointer or touch screen options and you choose your own preferences. In theory at least.

For my money, I love pointer controls in prime 3. It just feels so fluid and accurate.

Incidentally I am excited for pro evolution potential on Wii u. Touch screen management options, plus pointer controls will have to remain for multiplayer if the system turns out to be only capable of one tablet support. And in that case it may as well support pointer controls for 1p too

I prefer the GC controls as well, but there's no reason a traditional control scheme couldn't work. They could have left them exactly as they are while still allowing you to look around with the c-stick and fire your gun with R & missiles with Z. This would allow you to change the way you play on the fly. In other words, as default, both B & R fired your gun and Y & Z fired your missiles. They'd have to make the gun's upgrades stackable and put the map in the pause menu for it to work, but I doubt many people would complain about that. It just seemed silly to have to hold down a button to free look when the c button was specifically made to handle cameras. Either way, in the future I hope they allow a fully customizable control scheme if Retro makes another FPS. I know there are people out there that don't want to see the pointer gone.

As far as Prime becoming more FPS like - is that such a bad thing? Nintendo needs a solid first party FPS and Retro is the best team to do it. It doesn't have to be the Metroid series, but they could still do it while pleasing fans of the original Prime games. As long as they keep it a spin-off and the main series in tact I think it would be more beneficial. I agree the Federation Troopers and other characters they started putting into MP3 should have kept them at minimum (such as dead bodies and enough to keep the story along like in MP2) but they could serve a purpose in the greater scheme of things. Multiplayer in the Prime games would work a lot better if it were just Federation Troopers vs. Space Pirates. They could have left that a traditional type MP experience while Samus rocked it solo in the campaign.

Why are there people that prefer sticks to infrared control =\

As long as they keep it a spin-off

Yeah, spin-offs work great.

Someone distance Eiji Aonuma as far away from the Wii U controller touchscreen as possible, just remove it from his devkits or something. Jesus christ they're playing with fire.
He would likely be executive producing, not directing, so it seems unlikely he would be working directly with a devkit.

The thought of being able to play games like Zelda, Starfox, Kid Icarus, etc. on the big screen with AA and in HD is sublime. From a control perspective, with the Wii U it is now possible to have games compatible on both console and handheld. Technically, how feasible is it to do this since the Wii U tablet could essentially act as the bottom screen of the 3DS? If they were to release games that could do this, particularly thru DD, I think it would be a huge selling point to own both systems and would theoretically increase the game library of Wii U while potentially increasing sales of the game. I would gladly buy Zelda for the 5th time if they were to do this and would invest heavily into purchases via DD if they were to be able to incorporate this. I always thought that's what the future of 'connectivity" should have been striving for. It seems like a no brainer, but is this even possible with the two architectures of 3DS and Wii U?
The last thing Nintendo needs to do is give people yet another reason to skip 3DS.

Pleeeease, no.

If Nintendo takes away Wiimote-controls from Zelda and Metroid for Wii U, I will buy the system only at the end of its life cycle. No motivation at all to step back to dual analog.

Pointer controls could have been the next damn analog stick, but of course since it came with motion controls, no one wants to give it a second chance...

Here's hoping I'm proven wrong though. In other news, I agree with Solar, this radio silence is worse that even Nintendo standards. WTF is going on with this system? At this point, even game announces with just a WiiU logo on them would be fine.

This, it really show that Nintendo has not understood where their success with Wii and DS came from. Hint: It might have had to do with intuitive controls, not with dual-analog.

Well, maybe not titles like Kid Icarus and others built from the ground up for 3DS, but remaking old games like Mario 64, Zelda:OoT and Starfox should be compatible on both systems. In fact anything in the VC should be compatible on both and they should have a system like Steam where once you pay for the game, you own it and can download it as many times as you want and on as many systems as you want. That would be awesome.

I just want to say Pointer controls >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>dual analog conrols.

If we see the death of Pointer controls next gen, I'm going to be fucking pissed. I'm already pissed off about UC3 not supporting Move, WTF is wrong with you Sony.

HELL. NO. Can't stand pointer controls. Despise. Hate. Seek its destruction. Ugh.

not in a fast action first person shooter

Pretty much. Everything I recently found is either not very helpful, extremely vague, or just confirmation of what we already basically know. It's odd.

The best thing the Wii introduced to gaming were pointer controls. I hope they're not awkward when they are implemented into Wii U games, but they probably will be, considering the size and shape of the controller :/

The controller doesn't work, so the third-parties all sent the dev kits back to Nintendo and demanded a traditional controller with four analog sticks.

Yeah it's been crazily quiet.

I agree. I would also really like to see some dual pointer control games this coming gen.

I'll take vague.

4 months of dead silence. Could Nintendo have gone back to the drawing board or are they just good at keeping quiet?
NIntendo are not one to just divulge how things are going when they are working on a new system, that's up to other developers to blab about

Maybe both, maybe it's just that the 3DS needs more attention and it needs more public attention than the Wii U.

Yeah, Nintendo is like that. They didn't revealed the Wii Remote till around 4 months after the Revolution was revealed and the official name been "Wii" a year after Revolution was announced.

Plus it's obvious they currently want focus on the 3DS.

Only thing I remember right now: Ubisoft Quebec is working on an unannounced Wii U exclusive. It seems that basically all Ubisoft studios have something in the works for the system. Also, that Ghost Recon game is seemingly called "Ghost Recon Online Arcade", and uses the same engine as the PC version (which is an engine I've never heard of - probably an internal Ubisoft thing like LyN or Scimitar).

What else... The Wii U SoC was developed by AMD India and uses an ARM core for I/O purposes, but I believe I already wrote that a while ago. And Lego City Stories is developed by TT Fusion and published by Nintendo.

I must say that I'm kinda glad that the whole 3DS fiasco happened and Nintendo knows what they've done wrong (hopefully), because that can only mean good things for Wii U while their still working on it.

If it means a "delay" to late 2012, I'll take it if we get a better console in the end.

I hope any PS360 games announced in the next few months also come to WiiU or I'm going to be really worried for the system. Motion control complainers ruining industry like Celda complainers :(

Nov2012 at the latest, in time for the Wii's anniversary

Unfortunately for Nintendo any delay is gonna hurt their profits due to the slowing wii sales in all major territories and the so far non-existent wii 2012 line up. If the wii u is delayed to the end of 2012 they'll be banking on the 3ds carrying them for a full year probably with a wii price cut down to $99 thrown in the mix.

I would too and it'd actually work out better for me in terms of buying it at launch... But I won't lie, a part of me was really excited to see next gen start as soon as next year instead of a soft confirmation for something coming two years later.

But what about the killer lineup they have for Wii in 2012.

I agree that Nintendo's tablet controller is a regression. I wanted a refinement of the pointer/nunchuk system.

As for FPS, just give me the option to use the pointer. Otherwise, I'm not buying any.

I just played Blops and got a 3.5 kdr using the remote, playing against some Classic Controller (dual analog) users who also play on PS3. Try again.

Yep. They just handled Wii U's reveal poorly. And with them revealing the controller now instead of later like with Wii, we stand to have a pretty big gap in official information. I look forward to seeing what they haven't revealed yet for Wii U though.

Thanks. So that means we're going to see something else on top of Assassin's Creed. When you say "all" was there any indication of the games being exclusive? Interesting about the GROA part. Someone also in the know said from what he knows DICE will be pushing the Wii U version of Battlefield 3 to look like the PC version.

You talked about the SoC, but I don't remember you mentioning the use of an ARM core. I wonder if that is for the controller. That sounds like it would take the burden off the other cores.

The Wii uses an ARM9 to handle IO and security.
