I wonder how they are going to market the Wii U.

The marketing for the 3DS is GODAWFUL at least here in The Netherlands. The commercials are truly terrible. It's basically 2 little kids playing some Nintendogs, I have no clue who would find that appealing. When that game is basically old news. But its the centerpoint of the entire 3DS promotion here.

If they want to appeal to core and casual with the Wii U I'm really curious how they plan to market that.

I've mentioned this before, but for non-gamers they should bring back the Asian guys and have them going around with a Wii U controller saying "Wii would like U to play."

With the core they should focus on 2-player Madden. That IMO should be the gateway game for that group.

I prefer "Would U like to play?" Flows better with the original.

... But bringing them back would cause market confusion and endless trolling...

Nah. The original wasn't asking them if they wanted to play. That would change the concept. And as long as they identify it's a new console it won't be a problem.

What I mean is we don't see them employ celebs that often. We had Seth Green for DQ, there were some for the Nintendog and I think Brain Training commercials, and now Robin and Zelda (which I thought was NoE, but BP confirmed they were). But that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

well, i think some of the scenes from that intro video we saw from e3 (the golf scene in particular, the drawing of Link, probably some more) would be a good start. I think people will LOVE the tablet being used in creative ways. More broadly I'd think the ghost recon online trailer would make a BRILLIANT commercial with some mild editing to shorten it slightly, a "core" gamer (read: shooter fanatic) would LOVE that shit.

Madden commercials? two coaches drawing plays. Imagine getting the Harbaughs to join in the commercial and each has a tablet and they each draw a play and end up scoring TDs against each other. Or something. There is a LOT of room for creativity here.

I'd become a Neogaf Gold member, thus paying a subscription fee, if it included more people like you on the forum. I don't even have to talk much on here anymore. Every time I give the board a glimpse you're saying what I would have.

That's NoE.

Coulda sworn I've seen in here too.

Beyonce did Rhythm Heaven and Nintendogs, I believe.

Not "confirmed," but I've never seen it here and all of the other Williams ads are NoE ads.

I said that about the first ad. They leave a strong impression.

The funny thing is, I don't remember Gaborn being so proactive in gaming side threads prior to Wii U. I feel like there isn't much more I can add to these conversations when he's around. :P

Looking back at the first Robin/Zelda commercial they gave the UK website at the end. Was there another version with the US website?

I've been looking and I can only find ones for various European countries.
Which is weird, since Zelda was at E3 for Nintendo as part of their booth, and they did little interviews with them.
Hmmm.

It's eerie as hell. It's like the dude is reading my damn mind. I love it, really. And it blows me away that someone has to explain how much potential awesome could be had with this system based only on what we know already.

It's unreal how few people actually seem to get it.

well, nintendo didn't really do a good job at spreading the word.

and if we were visionaries like gaborn news here i'd get a job at it!

I didn't think any of them did, but I was open to believe they had some American version(s) I missed.

It's also amazing how many ignore the possibilities for no other reason than it's coming from Nintendo. The same ones doing that would more than likely be all over it if it came from MS or Sony.

All anyone has to watch is the Battle Mii and Chase Mii videos and ponder from there.

Seriously, those videos alone showcase something completely new. Even if the person doesn't like Wii-esque game experiences, it's not hard to imagine that asymmetrical formula being applied to other game types and IPs.

Or better yet. The versus in Killer Freaks.
So much potential for that mode.

sure but it's not like they were in any e3 spotlight. I barely seen some screenshots and skimmed a few hands on, and I'm pretty on top on my nintendo shit you know me, so I don't blame any passer by

It's beyond that now. It's been months. There are enough Wii U positive folks spreading the news about the Chase Mii / Battle Mii, Killer Freaks, and Ghost Recon videos... If people haven't seen those and are spreading nonsense, there's a reason; if people have seen those and aren't swayed, I don't know... I mean, damn, some of that stuff was put together in a very short period of time. It's amazing how big of a shift this could bring to how people play games - not only in general, but with each other.

The revival of local multiplayer?

That's already been done. The Wii handled that already. The Wii U is just carrying on its legacy, meanwhile throwing in a few new tricks and opening the system up to all new 3rd party excuses for not developing games for it.

Ahh... it's a new day.

Something I wanted to see for years was a single-player dual Wiimote puzzle game. Were there any single-player games on Wii that used two Wiimotes?

Ok. That was another type of genre that could benefit from that type of control. I wonder if anyone would trying a single-player game with dual Upads?

AceBandage said:
How would that work, logistically?
I mean, maybe like... a rhythm game where you have to use both touch screens.
Hmmm.

That's what I was thinking. Or it could be puzzle-related like my Wiimote idea. Or take the HUD idea for one screen and split them among two. One for items and one for a map.

Can the controllers communicate with one another?

There's no real reason they couldn't.
It's all just wireless signals, after all.
Though, it's a moot point anyway, since the controllers won't be storing any data, and they'd have to go through the console regardless.

Sorry if you are being direct and I'm not understanding, but what exactly do you mean? I though it would be able to house small games/miis/etc. Or does it run literally everything through the streamed connecting to the system?

Everything that appears on the UTab screen is from the Wii U console.
It doesn't store any games or anything.
They are useless away from the system, as has been stated directly by Nintendo.

Damn, didn't know they had went that far with it. I thought it housed some small info like the wiimote, but I guess not.

The Wiimote can only store like... a few kilobytes of info, and wouldn't have to actually process any of it into an image.
You would basically have to put a DS/3DS into the UTab to run games and stuff. Not cheap and not efficient.

Ah...yeah, that wouldn't be a smart move at all. Costly, and it would fade into their other existing market much more.

AceBandage said:
I don't know why they'd even bother to do that again.
Who honestly ever used their WiiMote to transfer Miis?

Given the alleged expense of the pads, it might well get some usage this time around. Everyone I knew had three to four Wii remotes, as well as a Mii for me created on their system. But if I'm planning to visit someone and taking my U-pad? Might as well put some of my info on it to go along for the ride.
