Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

Actually...
Thinking about it, having Monolith make a game similar to Mass Effect, but with a more fluid combat system, and coop, would be insanely good...
I mean, they could just make the enemies scale in difficulty based on how many players are in the party.
And have a good selection of classes.

Damn...
I need to write this stuff down!

Retro Zelda.

only if it looks like this

ok guys, lets get away from all this silly industry talk and get to something even sillier - the end of conference bomb.

If you guys could choose the game they unveil at the very end of the conference after Reggie says "Oh and one more thing," what would it be? I don't mean what's your most wanted nintendo game. I'm more curious what you guys think would be the biggest bomb they could drop that would be the biggest possible surprise.

I think Eternal Darkness 2 would be pretty easy, but I doubt that they're far along enough wi the title. Still, a logo or a short ten-second clip would be fantastic.

Another candidate:
a yo-yo flies across the screen, returning to the palm of its owner. The sounds of seagulls and ocean waves are heard in the background as the volume slowly but steadily increases. Then, an orchestrated version of the theme music begins, and we see a brief scene at a shipbuilding facility - it is the Sub-C, hanging from heavy iron chains, being released into the water. The screen fades to black, and the words "Holiday 2013" appear on the screen. Fin.

Obviously, something I've fantasized about for a while..

I doubt it will ever happen but I would love them to drop another F-Zero game.

Do you guys think the Monolith game has a good chance of being at E3?

For reference, Monolith's Disaster game was at E3 2006 when the Wii's lineup of games was revealed.

If they had a revealing for Monolith's game, Retro's game, and a teaser for Silicon Knight's Eternal Darkness 2, everyone at E3 would be in awe.

*facepalm* no, give me a title! choose one! I'm sure you wouldn't want to see Nintendo Presents: Retro's Barbie Adventure

I dunno, those would be big but I think it's a bit played out by now. I think nintendo needs something out of left field to really surprise people, in the same way other m came out of nowhere.

I honestly think a 3D Mario game would probaly be the biggest if we are talking about a surprise announcement along with them dropping the bomb about it being at launch, I also think 3D Mario is better to get buzz at launch where as 2D Mario is better a couple years in when you have that huge install base. Most people aren't expecting a main 3D Mario game in the first year and we know it will probaly be the best game to show off visuals based off of how good the Galaxy games looked without being in HD, so I would say :Super Mario Universe.

Maybe something that would get the biggest surprise reaction would be a new IP targeting the "dudebro" crowd, most people probaly would be shocked at some M rated FPS in the vain of Gears being Nintendo's main exclusive announcement. It could win over some people and get press even if I wouldn't be happy, those are my two best ideas, either you go classic with a Mario bomb or go way out of left field with a game that people wouldn't expect to come from Nintendo.

Yeah I think there's a good chance.

Nintendo revealed a metric ton of games at E3 2006, many of which where only given a few seconds worth of footage. Expect some amazing montages!

That one site said 10 to 11 Nintendo published Wii U games would be shown at this E3.

Is that a far fetched number?

Take your pick:

Ultima Underworld 3

Mikami Exclusive

Yoshi's Island 2

Captain Falcon Brawler/HnS (can't get over how cool this would be)

Smash Trilogy HD Online unveiled to this song (sound like a track straight out of Smash)

errrrr......an odd selection of choices for sure. Probably the Mikami exclusive. Vanquish and RE4 tell no lies.

If it's not too much to ask for, can someone list out all of Nintendo's first party studios and the last game they worked on? (including the year it was completed)

Not really.

In that vein, my choice would probably be a Mach Rider reboot by Retro. I think I might prefer a Startropics game by them but Mach Rider would make a bigger splash.

Well...now that I think about it, Anth0ny is probably right and a retro developed zelda would be the most earth shattering. But I'd personally feel Mach Rider would be a better choice since it revives an old IP at the same time.

I agree with you. You know, why is it that nearly every Namco and Sega arcade game in the 90s were a silky smooth 60fps. Plus they always had great graphics. It's like we've gone backwards in the last two generations of consoles. I really hope Wii U brings games with better (60fps) framerates, with a few exceptions where 30fps is fine (Zelda).

I think there should at least be standards for certain kinds of games. Certain genres already have unwritten standards like how fighting games and racing games usually run at 60fps even today. It'd be nice if shooters adopted the same rule.

I know Nitnendo will probably keep their games 60fps next gen, and one of their advantages is that their art styles aren't very graphics-intensive.

I loved the 180 that some people just pulled in this thread.
Suddenly, beefy hardware in the next generation consoles is interpreted as completely catastrophic, the downfall of gaming, etcetera.

If Nintendo goes after the dudebro crowd, I have this fear that they'll be making it not because they're inspired to make it and because they have an innate passion for that kind of game, but because they're aiming at a specific market in a more cynical/calculated fashion.

Something about it just rubs me the wrong way, like it's Nintendo trying to be something they're not, just out of the hope that they capture the pseudomature middle-school/high-school boy demographic.

Probably. They appear to have been working on their WiiU project for some time.

For me though a new Ultima Underworld would be the biggest megaton ever. Lots of cool applications possible for the subscreen too. Only problem is Spector is tied up doing another ridiculous Mickey game... :\

This will sound kind of out there but...

Is it possible...just possible...that Retro Studios might be working on 2 projects for Wii U?

I agree, as my post said I wouldn't be happy and I was mainly thinking about it from your perspective, along with the fact we have enough of those M rated FPS games. Those reasons are also why it probaly would be shocking though, you just aren't going to hear people saying that they expect the next "Halo" or whatever to be an exclusive Nintendo title.

I kind of doubt it. Didn't they say in an interview they halted another project to work on DKCR?

Yes, but here's why I ask.

That other project they were working on was before DKCR.

The project where they were posting job postings for hand painted texture artists came 1 year after DKCR was released. I'm not sure if these are both related to the same project or not.

I get this feeling that Retro might be a little larger now. Especially with them being able to help Nintendo with Mario Kart 3DS while working on their own projects.

And Nintendo's been doing lots of reorganizing with their studios lately.

Huh?

I haven't been keeping up to well, but I've pretty much always had that sentiment. And I never really believed for a minute we'd be getting that kind of hardware in the WiiU.

I think you've got the wrong thread. I mean yes, some were trying to think of magic ways for the WiiU to have more power than was likely. But they'd do that anyway.

And I still consider the WiiU a little powerhouse.

I mean at least 360 level hardware without its biggest limitation is still going to result in pretties. Just not the pretties we're likely to see in a new Sony or MS console.

Mario x Sonic crossover platformer headed up by Yoshiaki Koizumi.

True, but as far as I know they haven't gotten that much larger. According to LinkedIn they currently have 77 employees. That's 17 more since 2010.

Personally I wish most of the discussion in this thread was about games and what they'll show at E3 more than tech talk. There can only be so much discussion about whether Wii U will be 1 GB or 2 GB of ram.

I think he's talking about Shocking's statement about what MS is doing with the Next Xbox. His statement is still pretty weird and unfair, I mean most are just worried about further rising dev costs and layoffs etc.

I think he was just bringing the hyperbole maybe? I kind of see that if the WiiU was more powerful than current gen would also bring an increase in cost so calling out the increased costs from the others being more powerful again would be silly if you were hoping for a 5x 360 = WiiU type deal.

Once a Nintendo system hits its groove, Nintendo tends to release about one game per month. And there will be multiple launch titles, and future big titles for Nintendo to show off to get people excited about the future of the console. So yeah, 10 to 11 first-party games shown off seems a good number to me.

I do think Nintendo plans on having Retro be even larger then they have been so I think it's possible they are or will become a company that works on multiple AAA games at the same time. I do not think we will hear about more then one Retro game at E3 however.

I'm curious about one Retro related thing, do people expect Retro's next game to be in the launch window, or do they just expect an E3 announcement with a possible 2013 release date attached? I'm torn on whether or not Retro's game will be the Wii U's big launch game or it will just be something to be hyped about in the future.

DKCR came out November 2010 and they've been working on a project long before that, so I'm expecting them to show something at this E3.

Well costs are going to go up no matter what, but it's definitely possible to overshoot things. Going from $5-6million budgets to $25-40million budgets this gen and then to $60million next gen is pretty ridiculous.

Why do you think it'll be a "big" launch game or something to be hyped about? I mean sure, Metroid Prime and DKCR were awesome, but those are the only big/hype-creating games that they've done so far, with a lot of projects that got canceled because they weren't up to Nintendo's standards.

My gut tells me that Retro's game will be a launch window title.

Their last game came out November 2010 I believe? So they'll have a good 2 years of development on their game. And they probably started working on the Wii U game months before DKCR came out in stores. DKCR was probably finished months ahead of time, but Nintendo thought a November release was best for it.

The other reason is that Retro employee on Twitter talked about crunch time, and you only talk about crunch time when you're dealing with deadlines.

I feel the same way, i'm actually kind of proud of myself, I completely have avoided getting into the the power arguments and have come back for the game talk. Really when you think about it games are what Nintendo's consoles will always be about because they are only a video game company.

True enough.

This industry at its current tech pace is completely unsustainable.

There's not enough of us to make a $5 million Chibi Robo profitable, let alone $100 million. So say good bye in the coming years to any game series that can't offset a $20 million dev budget.

It seems to me that Nintendo has big plans for Retro so I'm just assuming that when a Retro game comes out for a brand new console it will likely be one of the bigger games on the platform, your right though until you know what game is actually being developed you can't really get hyped.

The other reason is that Retro employee on Twitter talked about crunch time, and you only talk about crunch time when you're dealing with deadlines.
In game development, there are many deadlines, each of which could lead to crunch, especially of there are problems. 4 months ago I was crunching pretty heavily, my game won't be shipping until maybe June, the crunch had nothing really to do with final launch.

I'm going back and watching the 2006 E3 press confrence right now and within the first 3 minutes I'm already grinning from ear to ear, Miyamoto conducting the orchestra with a Wiimote is adorable!
