Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

ok guys, lets get away from all this silly industry talk and get to something even sillier - the end of conference bomb.

If you guys could choose the game they unveil at the very end of the conference after Reggie says "Oh and one more thing," what would it be? I don't mean what's your most wanted nintendo game. I'm more curious what you guys think would be the biggest bomb they could drop that would be the biggest possible surprise.

The screen is black.

All of a sudden a ticking sound like a clock starts to happen.

As the camera zooms out we see a clock pendulum begins swinging back and forth.

Once the pendulum stops. It cuts to various action scenes of the game with symphonic music blaring and ends with the title screen for the next Chrono Trigger game that Nintendo moneyhatted from SquareEnix.

I loved the 180 that some people just pulled in this thread.
Suddenly, beefy hardware in the next generation consoles is interpreted as completely catastrophic, the downfall of gaming, etcetera.

This post suggests no clue of the issue at hand.

Well costs are going to go up no matter what, but it's definitely possible to overshoot things. Going from $5-6million budgets to $25-40million budgets this gen and then to $60million next gen is pretty ridiculous.

There were 20+ million budgets last gen I believe (GTA and Shenmue and things like that iirc.)

I can see his point even if he went a bit over the top in it's delivery, if you are against increasing dev costs and using this gen as an example of unsustainability you should theoretically be against the WiiU being more powerful than this gen.

I think in terms of what would potentially be earth shattering crazy announcements, that no one suspects.

A teaser of a new stylized "dark yet whimsical and moody" Zelda, which is co-developed by Retro and From Software with supervision from EAD. Would be pretty huge.

A joint co-op effort from EAD Tokyo and Kyoto for a 2D mixed with 3D Mario game. Addressing both concerns of non linear exploration and precise technical platforming. Would be amazing.

First ever trailer of HL3 "coming to Steam and Wii U first", detailing Freeman's experiences juxtaposed with the recent new events in the HL universe. 2 minute trailer, all tied together with this song, called "A Perfect World". Pants will be soiled.

New Team Meat project shown. A personal hope.

Yoshi's Island obviously!

.

That's a great one, I'd lose it over that.

Ah, neat.

It will be interesting if they play with sound with that better than they did with the Wiimote speaker.

Like having someone who's screaming far away come out from the controller.

$20+million budgets were not the norm last gen, just like I'm sure the inevitable $100+million project we'll see next gen wont be the norm either.

There should be a happy balance. If I could rewrite history, I would have made the Wii a tad more powerful and the 360/PS3 significantly less powerful and have the first new console hit in 2010/11. I am definitely against Wii U being a super powerful beast. It would be funny to see people's reactions, and I'd still get hyped, but I'd think it was a big mistake.

Stripping it down to a binary choice like that is a very immature way of thinking about it (not trying to insult you, just saying it's very 1 dimensional). The reality is Nintendo needs to make wii u a certain level of power for business reasons, but they can't let it be too powerful either for financial reasons. There are pros and cons on every side. Like I said, if I could rewrite history, I would have pulled back development costs for this gen by making it weaker and shorter. But that's obviously not possible, so Nintendo needs to find the best compromise available, as should Sony and MS.

The reason the Wii Remote speaker wasn't really used well is because it was a horrid little speaker, it didn't have the quality to do much. Hopefully the Wii U speakers are better.

So according to a Linkedin profile, THQ has two unannounced Wii U games.

http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2012/01/thq_has_two_secret_wii_u_titles_in_the_works

One is a multiplatform game (360/PS3/Wii U/DS).

I am confident this is WWE '13.

But the other unannounced game on the Linkedin profile is a Wii U exclusive game. So lets talk about that. THQ recently registered two trademarks. The first trademark was "1666" and the other trademark was "Evolve".

Do you think either of these two are related to the exclusive Wii U game that THQ is making? Here's some articles about the trademarks.

1666:

Evolve:

Nintendo talked about collaborating with third parties they never teamed up with before. So anything is possible.

Shouldn't far away screaming come from the TV and near stuff from the Wiipad?
I'm gonna miss my telephone calls though. Gonna have to keep a Wiimote connected so the games can call me!

Is the 3DS Mic different/better than the older DS ones? Do you think we will get "Scream into the mic to buy the cannon for your boat Link!" moments where you just blow, i read mixed things about voice recognition in Love Plus (where it seems you have to actually talk, my mic broke so i have no clue).
Next Zelda will be full of windwheels!

You pretty much stole the essence of my answer. For THQ, I work under the assumption that any un-announced title in development for a Nintendo console is licensed crap.. until proven otherwise.

(aside: I wonder how their restructuring is going.)

"I agree that as we approach a potential new console cycle it does introduce an element of risk. Another way to think about that is it does present a tremendous amount of opportunity... The best time to establish new IP is near the beginning of a new cycle and we think that can provide a tremendous opportunity for the transformation of THQ. "

Hey ya never know lol.

Also arent they exiting licensed kid games?

http://www.edge-online.com/news/thq-exiting-kids’-licensed-games-market

"THQ has announced plans to revise its business strategy by exiting the kids’ licensed games market and focusing its resources on core franchises and digital initiatives.

The company will “be a more streamlined organisation focused only on our strongest franchises”, according to CEO Brian Farrell, with its five internal studios continuing work on UFC Undisputed 3, Darksiders II, Company Of Heroes, Insane, Saints Row, Warhammer 40,000, and a new title from Patrice Désilets and his team.

If they do create a new IP, I'd expect something closer to da blob than saint's row.

That doesn't necessarily follow. Even my more conservative Microsoft/Sony estimates were always going to be substantially higher than my more aggressive U estimates, and bringing the U comfortably into the low end if that multi-plat range on the production side is both pro-Nintendo and pro-sustainability. If the incremental cost of U inclusion on the production side is low, it increases the total number of consumers served by the primary development cost drivers.

Alright then.. so Squidward might be getting his own music game. Or Sandy Squirrel's "feats of strength" athletic-themed game.

Or maybe it's a Miss Puff's Driving School game?

i think the general assumption was that no one would be going too crazy next gen. microsoft and sony would clearly have better consoles, but nothing dramatically better. maybe like what the xbox was to the ps2, or something to that effect. the three would be in the general vicinity of each other. i thought each company had a pretty good reason not to go crazy next gen, even microsoft, but it seems like that will not be the case.

in microsoft's case, it seems especially odd that they won't try to make something affordable from the get-go, improve kinect, and then market it as the all-in-one device they've been meaning to make since the late 90s.

I'm beginning to wonder if they believe kinect alone will propel an appletv-esque device forward. In which case, they may be planning to use a two pronged strategy. It'll be interesting to see if they can shift "xbox" from being the name of a singular product to a brand, much like "apple" is perceived as a brand of interrelated products.

So Microsoft is building a high powered console because of input from 3rd parties and you think those third parties aren't going to focus on that console?

"Hey Microsoft, spend billions of dollars building this high tech console so we can up port WiiU stuff. Thanks"

What would be the point of them all wanting that power if they aren't going to use it and build games based around the specs they are convincing Microsoft to incorporate?

MS or Sony only selling 10 million in the 1st year. MS started out real slow this gen. If they both eat each others lunch and slow each other down, Nintendo could theoretically be out to a 20 million unit lead. That and the HD twin base looks promising, which would stunt a transition. It's a possibility.

tbh, I'm not really expecting much from THQ. We'll see what they have in store for the Wii U at E3.

Also if the first game mentioned were WWE '13 wouldn't there also be a PSP and Wii version as well? I thought they go all out and release them on every console.

If it's not too much to ask for, can someone list out all of Nintendo's first party studios and the last game they worked on? (including the year it was completed).
Anyone, please?

Or they just divorce the Kinect and Xbox brands entirely.

considering their treatment of the 360 since 2010, i was expecting this to be the case, where the next xbox system would be named the kinect something.

the xbox name itself is a terrible thing to try and apply to more than just games too. kinect has wider appeal, i think.

cuts from 3DS portion of presentation which has just ended with a trailer for a Skyward Sword engine based Zelda game for 3DS.

Stage is black. Spotlight comes on. Its Reggie

Reggie pulls out WiiU remote.... screen comes on behind showing Reggie selecting his Mii to fight in Smash Bros U.... 5 seconds pass by "A NEW CHALLENGER HAS JOINED" Iwatas Mii jumps into screen.... Iwata walks out on stage holding a WiiU remote... 10secs pass.... new challenger has joined..... Miyamoto walks out holding a WiiU remote

Xbox Live is part of Windows Phone and Windows 8. Xbox isn't going anywhere.

West Coast Customs did a Microsoft car on the show tonight and the WCC owner said "When you think of Microsoft you think of Xbox." It's the best brand they have in the entire company at the moment.

Lets speculate on Wii U's price again. I feel Nintendo cannot go over $299.

$299 is probably it. $349 would be another 3DS situation, and while $250 would be great, Iwata has basically said that it'll be more than that. I'd be pleasantly surprised by $279 or $269.

I was gonna say Diablo III but I think TheExplodingHead's suggestion of HL3 might be an even bigger megaton. Especially if it was a timed exclusive or some such.

HL3 as a Wii U console exclusive? That would be so bizarre. Awesome, but bizarre.

The biggest "wtf" reveal might be if that silly rumor awhile back came true and WoW was announced for the platform. People would walk out of the conference conflicted and confused whether they should be excited or not.

"Am I going to play WoW again? Is this really going to happen? Should I be excited or afraid?"

Lets speculate on Wii U's price again. I feel Nintendo cannot go over $299.

It would still be their most expensive system ever.

Here in Australia, the GCN was $329 (dropped from $400 a few weeks out from launch in response to the huge post-launch Xbox price slash) and the Wii was $400. I'd expect the Wii U to be around the $400-500 price range here, which would mean probably around $250-350 launch price in the US.

I agree with that, I don't think Nintendo would risk $400 US and there is probaly no way they can go GC $199 US cheap.

Hadn't thought of that.

Man, a monster Xbox3 is something I really thought was unlikely. Those silly clowns up in Redmond. If only I were running the company, I could set them straight. Same goes for nintendo and Sony too.

Always a bunch of clowns...

I thought that they'd go modest this time around, but a chance to isolate Nintendo and tempt Sony into seriously crippling themselves financially? That might prove to be too tempting a move for them.

Sure, they may claim that they have no new console info planned for E3, but I'll bet they're going to show some of their cards. Watch.

And for the U, I still predict $350. Nintendo should aim at getting shoppers into thinking of the whole package like, "hey.. I'm getting a pad and a gaming console in one box - that's pretty good!" Throw-in a few pack-in demo-level games on the scale and role of Wii Sports, make a Mario game available for purchase on Day 1, include a $10 WiiWare card inside the box (gotta get new owners used to online features ASAP), decent HD hookup cables, and maybe a disc or two with short demos/previews for upcoming third-party titles.

At $400, I'd be a bit weary of the prospect of it being a mass-market price.
At $300, I'd be fine, but less certain that it's a proper half-step between generations of hardware. Either that, or I'd be scared that Nintendo would be taking too steep a loss on each unit sold.
At $250? Ehh..

I pretty much expect them to show something about their next console. Target renders and fuzzy dates? That might be all we get.

Given some of the hardware might not be completely final until next year.

Yup! Show just enough to take away some of Nintendo's thunder, but not too much where the competition can adjust plans before the 720 launch.

This E3 is going to be very telling as far as showing us how aggressive each of the three companies are going to be towards each other over the next 6-to-8 years. I suspect that we won't hear too much "oh them? We're not competing with them!" language this time around.

edit re: WoW

If any sort of western action-RPG comes out and it's good, I'm going to fear for my free time and my relationships with family and friends. Especially if it comes with decent stealth mechanics.. I'd be doomed in that case!

Since we're all desperate for news, I guess I'll post this, even though there's not much to it.

How Assassin’s Creed III Will Work on the Wii U

As bizarre as it seems to be thinking of a proper Assassin's Creed game appearing on a Nintendo console, it's going to happen later this year when Assassin's Creed III is released on the Wii U. Leading many people to wonder, how's it going to take advantage of the console's unique control pad?

The latest issue of Nintendo Power apparently has the answer, My Nintendo News transcribing a story from the latest issue that explains how the Wii U's pad will become your own private Animus.

While some aspects of the game's controls make it clear the Wii U touch screen will be this year's DS menu screen, such as tapping to change weapons, other things like the ability of the large individual screen to operate as somewhere to read database entries on the fly sound more promising.
