Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

Since Ive seen a lot of people post about it in this thread and other threads, its time for a public service announcement.

The Assassins Creed Wii U "info" from Nintendo Gamer is old. That magazine sucks and its all old shit and that the magazine used quotes from Ubisoft's roundtable at last years E3

Just look here.

Im seeing this on the big sites like Kotaku and IGN..... are these sites so lazy/stupid that they couldnt take 5 minutes to investigate and realize the info was old? I usually like IGN but this is pathetic.

lol, and Eurogamer has an article up where they say the info is from Nintendo Power.

Gaming Journalism strikes again.

So the info is both old and not old at the same time? Mind blown.

Wow, I didnt even see their article, gonna have to read so I can have a laugh. :p
Seriously tho, it takes 5 minutes to check this. That magazine literally used quotes from the guy speaking at the ubisoft-nintendo roundtable and tried to pass it off as new stuff. They even promised Wii U screens but that didnt turn out to be true, neither did the "first Wii U info" promise.

Edited now ;)

I'm starting to think that the only way for WiiU to hold on to 3rd parties is to sell millions of hardware ahead of the competition

so any real NDA lifts today?

Microsoft shooting for the stars is a horrible thing to hear, at least for me. That means bigger budgets for games, especially from some of the bigger developers as they try to out do each other. Which means they'll try to push the price of each game past $60 new in addition to the dlc they try to sell to already increase the price of the game now to make a profit. If this turns out to be true on Microsoft ends I'm even happier about just going with the Wii U. If this means only Nintendo games for the most part then so be it. I don't want to spend what it would cost to buy a new Xbox if they really push things just to make developers happier. In addition to the cost games will hit as well.

If this is the case and Sony foolishly tries to out do Microsoft I can only imagine we'll have a repeat of the loss of studios that we had at the beginning of this generation. If true Sony will be the deciding factor. Then again the success of the Xbox 360 might not change things and some big developers might just ignore the other two and just focus only on the new Xbox. Which makes the loss of studios even more certain. I won't feel sorry for them if they have no idea how to keep their business alive in the long term. I'm just not going to go broke if they want to keep up with this self-destruction.

you people shouldn't be expecting third party support any better than the wii, gamecube and n64.

I don't, but I've always been quite pessimistic on this issue. Most likely, we'll get token efforts from B- and C-string teams, and any perceived goodwill between Nintendo and third parties that was expected to magically bleed-over from close relationships in the portable space will yield jack squat in the home console space. We'll see plenty of vague, complementary comments about how Nintendo is so "brave" and "innovative" with their hardware and game design, and those comments - just like last time around with the Wii - will translate into nothing.. smoke blown up Nintendo's ass.

And if third parties decide to participate in this escalation of development costs, I have no pity for them when they get what's coming.

Western? Nope. I don't expect anything really from Ubisoft, Activision, EA, etc outside of the games (Madden, CoD, dance games) they push out on all systems no matter what. I do at least expect better japanese developer/publisher support though given Nintendo's relationship with them with the 3DS. If that's the case then I'll be happy. I don't expect the same level of support but something similar even if things are more spaced out.

Microsoft may sale this console at a loss, but then offset it with a 10-20 dollar increase on Xbox Live Gold. Or the recent addition of advertisement on the dashboard may offset the cost.

well, nintendo handheld third party support in general is a lot better than console support.

Yeah, but I think even more than that we're going to see a continuation of what we saw the start of last gen with traditionally console fare like Dragon Quest migrating to handhelds, at least in terms of stuff from Japanese developers. The 3DS is already two thirds of the way to the PS3's LTD and a third of the way to the Wii's in Japan after only a year on the market.

So Wii U won't be missing support because of Microsoft or Sony's systems as has been the case in the past, but instead because of its own handheld counterpart.

I wonder how much their audience is willing to tolerate per month?

I also wonder if Nintendo would ever be tempted into following that model. I hope not. Turning on my console to be greeted with a Mountain Dew or Axe Body Spray advertisement sounds very annoying.

Hey remember when Sony said they would be more powerful than whatever MS was working on?
I triple-dog dare 'em.

I'm sick of the technology wars that are waged on the Internet. If the PS4 and the next Xbox blow the Wii U out of the water in terms of specs, does it really matter as long as the Wii U has compelling experiences? It's unlikely that developers will take advantage of a significant jump in horsepower - that is, they are unlikely to use it in a way that delivers an innovative experience that isn't possible on current-generation hardware. I'm not talking about graphics, either. Few developers will be willing to push what's possible even if the next generation is on the bleeding edge of computer technology.

For me not that much more.I got pissed when they raised the price to $60.

Ads don't really bother me once they don't interfere with me playing videogames then i'm fine.

So, I wake up to find out that Microsoft is shooting for the moon with XB3 spec ?

What is it (is there a rumor?) an order of magnitude more powerful than XB360, like 10x all round?

10X more powerful than Wii U all around.

LOL.

Just give me Sega Model 3 arcade games at 1080p 60fps, Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and a few new IPs, and I'll be very happy with Wii U.

Not to say that I won't buy the XB3, I buy all consoles, it's the games that I chose to buy, not the consoles. I usually don't take sides in the console wars.

if that don't make sense, it's because I just woke up and have no coffee in the house!

10 sounds practical, ASSUMING they wait for 3D stacking tech.

We're at about .25 TFLOPS, 2.5 is a good round number I guess. Wii U will at least be 1 TFLOP.

Judging from last E3, we could expect the contrary: Darksiders, Batman Arkham, Assassins creed, Dirt...probably also CoD (it was also on Wii and DS).
I think that we could see many more multiplatform titles being developed also for Wii U in the next three years (before the new engines not compatible with Wii U hardware will become the standards) compared to the Wii.

For many reasons.
1) positioning of the console: it's quiet clear that Nintendo want to communicate that they have ALSO that kind of product (they showed third party titles on E3 floor all dedicated to the male-teenage target missing on the Wii)
2) compatibility of Wii U hardware with a lot of engines that different softco are using up to now and will be exploiting also for a couple of year now on
3) multiplatform development as main focus of all the major western softco, in order to reduce the impact of the development costs
4) focus of the softco on the home console rather than portable market

Nothing mind blowing, but better than Wii, in my opinion.

Yeah we did have the reel at E3 but to be honest I'm not getting my hopes up on some of those really appearing on the system. I'm taking a believe when I see it approach to 3rd parties. Until I see actual footage of Wii U versions, box art, and a release date it's all just talk at the moment. Consider me jaded I guess.

Not really but it does play a part in how many compelling experiences there are. If this does happen I'm hoping that Nintendo making middleware available for developers (no cost?) will result in new studios appearing or smaller ones taking chances on different types of games do to cost being minimized. Maybe some portable system only studios will take a chance as well or we'll get more and more downloadable games. If the bigger studios want to take part in the tech war and try to out do each other then so be it That's not going to end well.

What happened? Last time, rumours were about microsoft doing some more modest jump.
What's going on if we can't trust leaks anymore?
lol

Understood.
Me too, being ernest.
Let's wait and see!

Honestly, I don't think the Wii U's power getting potentially dwarfed is as big of an issue as it is it's controls. I feel like they are TRYING to market to the "casuals" but if they are, most won't care for something more powerful. If they are trying to get the "core" gaming market, the kind that plays COD and Madden, I feel like most people will not want to play their games with nubs. Sure they might FEEL great, but isn't it the overall perception that counts?

EA and Ubi aren't likely to do exclusives for anyone in most cases, unless they're weird spin-offs... even the likes of DICE are now wholly multiplatform. The Western third party developers and publishers that are likely to give someone an exclusive are more like: Take 2 / Rockstar, THQ, the old Blizzard side of Activision maybe, Bunjie, Ready At Dawn, Insomniac, devs like Epic, Bioware, Crytek etc. And they might be less inclined to in the coming generation.

I think that if there is a console that could get some exclusives from western publisher (in its first period of life) could be the Wii U.
nothing mind blowing (no Mass effect 4, or CoD MW4) but smaller (but intriguing?) titles that could exploit the new elements of the console itself (like Killer Freaks for example)

Yeah don't get me wrong - there will still be exclusives and timed exclusives, just as there always has been - but I don't think any of the big brands will be shocking anyone by going exclusive anywhere. Manufacturers just don't have the clout or the financial compensation to offer anymore to ask a publisher to restrict their audience.
