Wii U's Nintendo TVii, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, and Netflix pushed to Dec.

Saying "Fucking typical Nintendo. Fuck You." in any situation is a tantrum, yes. We are adults, use big boy words.
Sometimes using swear words is a good way to express your mood about something via text since others cannot hear your inflections nor see your body language. Not to mention this thread is pretty rife with similar statements. I suppose I could have used all CAPS as an expression of my disdain.

Regardless, I've said my peace in so far as my annoyance on the matter. Whether it appeared as a tantrum or not, it seemed to get my feelings across. Also, I'm hung over from the Bills/Dolphins game. Cut me some slack.

Also: canceling preorder because of a 2-5 week delay, ensuring that you will not be able to get the system whatsoever when the service becomes available due to demand? Seems like a pretty tantrum-ey reaction to me.
You're making an assumption there. It actually wasn't a rage-cancellation. It was well thought out.

While we have heard the supposed feature-set, there isn't a ton of real world impressions on its capabilities and performance. I was willing to essentially 'beta test' TVii at launch and determine whether it fits my needs for a simple reason ... if it didn't fit those needs I'd either be able to return it or at worst, sell it at original value due to high launch demand.

With this delay (and no confirmation all features will even be there in the first rev), it's quite likely I would be out of the above window for return/full resale.

See above.

Sure, and I'd level the same critique at all of them. I've grown pretty tired of the way people react to "basically anything" around here. But sure, I'll cut you some slack.

Well you'll have to cut me some slack here. Without any prior explanation on your part, it would be hard to assume any explanation beyond the obvious, which just appeared to be a preorder rage-quit.

Thank you.

For me this wasn't a 'basically anything' though. I'm in the process of cutting the cord, getting a TiVo for OTA recordings (with eventual attic antenna), and the Wii U looked like it would be a pretty nice piece of my cord-cutting puzzle in terms of broadcast playback. I was quite looking forward to using it as a potential centerpiece of my media processing.

Understood ... that's why I wasn't hostile in my explanation of my reasons.

I actually have explained my reasons for pre-ordering the Wii U in other threads, but obviously there's no guarantee you've seen them. I can understand why it would have appeared as a rage-cancellation without that knowledge.

They should learn from SmartGlass. It's better to be on-time, unfinished and underutilized than delayed to make a good first impression.

All the various Video Apps are already on the system based on a livestream. All that's missing is the unified system that TVii will offer

So the only reason you pre ordered a Wii was to watch TVii + Video Apps like Netflix and Hulu and now that the feature has been delayed you canceled your pre order?

That's perfectly fine... Im just trying to figure out your motivations so I dont assume anything.

Some people don't buy gaming consoles to play games

I'm not convinced we will (although I'd love to be wrong).

The quickest way for Nintendo to get a fairly full sevice to a large amount of people in the UK would be to get the system working well with Sky and Virgin boxes....as they already include most of the catch up services people will want.

If you have a TiVo box, the ios companion app is fantastic for searching on demand content and getting the TiVo to play it.

Actually the TiVo integration was a major factor in me getting a Wii U. And this throws a fairly big wrench in things. One of my coworkers is in the process of selling his TiVo, and has agreed to let me borrow it to see if I like it.

Now I have to hope I can push off testing it until later ... which he may not agree to. The TiVo and Wii U are kind of a package deal since this is the first set-top box that can be used as a TiVo playback device as far as I know. Otherwise you have to purchase a second TiVo AND subscription if you want to watch it in another room concurrently.

So without the Wii U, I may go in a different direction for my OTA recording and playback (possibly WMC).

I didn't realize this was a new concept.

Are the people who are concerned about the delay TiVo owners? In reality for people with modern setups, the delay is going to be much much longer than a month before we can use TVii. If at all ever. I'm disappointed simply because I wanted to see the Amazon and Netflix interfaces.

Does it matter that much? It will get the most sales during Christmas in any case...

In Fantasyland maybe.

Update: Netflix reps tell us the app will be available "when Wii U ships," but won't be part of Nintendo TVii "until Q1."

Netflix integration into TVii may be as far as almost 4.5 months away. And unless Nintendo is planning on launching all features at once as opposed to when they are completed (which seems unlikely) ... other integration may be even further away.

In the case of TiVo, it'd expect it to come later. It's logically a lower priority than Netflix (it only works with actual TiVo-branded cable card/OTA units, not the ones they OEM for cable/sat companies - so the install base is significantly less than Netflix subscriptions) ... and since it's the first 3rd party set-top box that's actually getting the capability to stream TiVo content, it's likely going to see plenty of development hiccups and bugs.

meh

Yeah, I started streaming that GT live thing midway so I showed up a bit late. I definitely saw app icons for Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime and Youtube preinstalled. I actually foudn that a bit weird because I expected to see one NintendoTVii icon instead of those four. So can those still be launched individually until TVii rolls out? If so, I'm more than fine with that. Or are they icons that when launched will say "please wait for a future update?"

UPDATE (from Raistlin above): Oh, so Netflix says their app works day 1. No sweat then. With youtube just launched for regular Wii, I'm sure it will work for U too. The meat is there, just not the pretty packaging.

As bad as it looks now, this will all be forgotten by next summer. Delays are typical for launches

If Netflix and YouTube are up day 1 then I'm fine with waiting for TVii.

It sucks that it isn't there, but at least the wait won't be that long.

Livestream showed Netflix, hulu and Amazon apps on the gamepad.

I'm catching the recording of that stream. They say at the start that the icons don't work, even though they're connected to the internet. Hmm. Maybe day 1 updates will enable that but who knows.

Yeah, but when clicked they didn't work. Hopefully whatever update everyone is waiting for today will enable at least access to Netflix and Amazon.

Anything that requires the internet is dead right now. I mean its possible they are dummy icons but Netflix did confirm they are live on day one.

Did we get punked by games journalism? Because checking the nearest Wii U to see if the apps are on the system seems like something a regular journalist would get fired for not doing.

'OMG, the new bmw doesn't have brakes'
'Dude, they sent you one outside to test drive'
'...'

Having these big features and games slowly roll out will make people keep talking about the system well after launch.

In December there will be threads all over the net talking about this feature.

A whole month?! Nintendo might as well just quit right now. So glad I waited.

...some of you are so full of shit. You weren't going to get it at launch, regardless. Don't act like this minor delay is the end of the world.

You get Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Youtube and the universal remote. What you don't get is a search function that searches all the services.

Hopefully. Again, the included software you mentioned apparently does not work without an update. Whether it's part of the day 1 update or day 201 update, heh, who knows for sure. I'd be very curious what that box / manual says about this stuff and TVii.

Don't know how much we can really bitch, though, those of us that can snag a Wii U before X-mas. After the holidays when people can actually buy the thing without jumping through hoops, that stuff better be ready. Us "ambassadors" are pretty much the beta testers I guess. Oh well as long as the games work and I get one, I'll be fine waiting a bit as features trickle out. Netflix and Youtube day 1 please.

Ill assume Netflix and others will work with the update, because it's really inexcusable to not have apps like Netflix not working especially if their up and running on Wii

Now I'm confused first I read this saying Nintendo tvii and apps such as Netflix hulu YouTube won't be available. Then gametrailers did some live thing and showed them there except Nintendo tvii. Then I hear it's just Nintendo tvii. Miscommunication lol what's the correct answer and how long of a wait do I have for these features?

Well, preorder cancelled.

Guess I'll take my chances and pick one up in December when it's fully functional. Nintendo really shot themselves in the foot with this one.

That search function thing is kind of what makes the Wii u unique in the first place

Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, amazon, I can already get all that on a million devices including my ps3, 360, Vita, 3DS, MacBook, iPad, iPhone, Apple TV, hell my smart TV can do all that

It is more than a search function. It provides all the social aspects too.

Good luck getting one by then.
It's called patience. This dude wasn't gonna get one in the first place go cry somewhere else. Seriously people need to be less picky about technology they don't even have. Where do you have a game system that can play like the wii u?

Chill peeps, I'm almost certain he's just messing around. The "shot themselves in the foot" is a common meme on GAF.

I'm thinking that they probably could have offered an inferior update on launch day and patched it up on the way, but I'd rather have a delayed update done thoroughly than multiple updates of minute progress (damn you, ps3).

FFS they had 8 years to catch up and still fucked it up.

I'll still be buying but sadly this was my most wanted feature!

... there was a console that had TV streaming in 2004? ...when Netflix wouldn't start streaming for another 4 years? If this was your most wanted feature in a video games system, buy a frigging laptop dude.

I think some of you don't realise what a colossal project it is to launch a new console. Some things get delayed. Deal with it!
