Wild Jaguar chained up for Olympic Ceremony in Brazil, then shot

So who had the good idea of approving Rio for the 2016 games? Everything seems to be on fire there with only two months til the games actually start.

F*ck this thing.

Brazil GAF, what are your thoughts on the Olympics?

I genuinely think this is the year I just stop watching the Olympics outright. Costs tons to put on with very little long term benefit to local economies, no human rights requirements since they'll give these things to any body, and seemingly no moral standard for host nations. Chaining a borderline endangered animal, armed military right near the torch, and shooting the poor thing. Where is the Olympics being held, the middle ages?

I feel bad for the athletes but this thing isn't worth supporting in the 21st century. Sorry.

Tragic, and hopefully whoever set this stunt up should be thrown to the lions (or jaguars).

Assuming the soldier thought they were in danger (I sure would be, if a jaguar was coming towards me) can't really blame him for firing.

Yep, shitshow.

The London Olympics was the first one I watched in my young life and it filled me with so much optimism from a united event of competing countries, and it was in my own country which was nice.

Rio, however, Rio seems like the most cynical, dangerous shit show of an Olympics history has ever seen second only to the 1938 Olympics perhaps...I just don't understand how it went all so wrong. Really is the epitome of how I feel about the world in 2016.

The Rio Olympics are turning into a dumpster fire. The worst I've ever seen.

The zoo that let them "borrow" this jaguar should be shut down immediately. They are obviously incapable of caring for the animals' welfare. In fact, shut down all the zoos.

BTW, this NPR article has a more complete story.

That picture in the OP + the front page thread with the stupid cunt who vandalized several U.S. National Parks... maybe the villains in Rainbow Six were on to something.

This Olympics is a sham. What purpose do they serve outside of TV contracts and $$$$$ anyways. Didn't the government just ask for a 50 million to finish stadiums that they will never use again? Absolutely pitiful.

Chain wild animal

Shoot wild animal

Why the fuck are you pulling stunts like this if you are going to shit your pants at a wild animal acting like a wild animal?

In a just world jaguars wouldn't be endangered but the corrupt Olympics would be.

i think people still remember it being bad, maybe not the specifics anymore.

but this will be almost a decade before having a "good" olympics again in 2020 (provided there aren't more fuckups). especially in trying economic times and the burden the IOC puts on host countries.

Weren't Vancouver and London considered "good" Olympics?

News like this pisses me right off. Such barbarism reminds me that humans haven't really evolved much since historical times. We like to think we have but such acts of cruelty as this proves otherwise.

Totally agreed. Fuck the Olympics this year until Japan get it. At least I don't think Japan will chain an endangered species or just any old animal up and then shoot it, at least (unless they do something cruel to some sea creature instead).

From this thread it seemed like the jaguar was chained, sedated, and shot at the same time. If I'm reading the NPR article correctly. It was used in the ceremony, then when being returned to the zoo it was on loan from it got loose. They tranq'ed it, but it still made a move toward a soldier who then shot it. Is that the correct sequence of events?

This is clearly just a show of power and money from the corrupt officials running the event. They're just too stupid to realize that nobody else, not even their own countrymen, falls for this shit, especially when an innocent endangered animal dies because of it.

Such a shit state of affairs this entire Olympics is turning out to be.

So at what point do we actually boycott these Olympics? Clearly the country has a lot of problems and this is just icing on the cake. Also shut down the zoo and relocate the animals.

Whatever "shit" you're getting it's not worth the hassle, AND it's going away as soon as the olympic games end.

Not everything. But this is my life, man. I live here. The games are going to happen no matter what I have to say on the situation. So I better make the most of it. They've built a lot a stuff for the games and I will enjoy it as much as I can. Shitting on my city on an international video game forum accomplishes nothing . We have plenty of people doing this already, Brazilians even.

Very good.
Calgary is talking about hosting another winter olympics. When it's done right, hosting an olympics can be very beneficial for a community. Cities just need to think long term instead of overspending and making it only a temporary event.

For sports sake, I think the olympics are important. It's a high profile international event that means a lot to those athletes and those sports. I like watching for the sports. I hate seeing the event poorly hosted.

It's just unfortunate that some olympics end up being a shitstorm, politically and/or financially, and it sure doesn't help when the IOC is horribly corrupt. FIFA is also corrupt, but you don't stop having international matches.

For the sake of sports, the olympics need to happen. It's just horrible that it gets messed up so often.

They were aiming to shoot Sonic actually, but officials found he was already long dead.

Well today Rory Mcilroy dropped out of the olympics because of Zika. Finally bring Golf back and have players dropping out because of Zika and other concerns. Adam Scott, Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel won't be there.
