Wild Jaguar chained up for Olympic Ceremony in Brazil, then shot

Unfortunately, the only way the IOC will stop giving the Olympics to countries that are simply unable to support them is if a bunch of people die when a stadium collapses.

This isn't even a speed bump to then.

That poor Jaguar. This entire Olympics has been a trainwreck; if Rio's entire economy wasn't reliant on them, I'd kind of hope they'd fail.

Man, I love watching the Olympics, but this has been such a next-level mess that I might just avoid the whole thing. Don't get me wrong, every Olympics has had their share of flaws and controversy, but Rio has turned fucking up into an art.

arent winter olympics usually not as popular? i personally dont hold it in as high value.
Though not as extremely popular as summer, the Winter Olympics still attracts large amounts of people. Based on my own anecdotal account living in Vancouver, there was still more than enough people here then to make it feel like one great party. Also significant enough for people to sweat bullets over Sochi two years ago

More importantly in terms of Vancouver being successful
- The population is not as dense as most popular cities and relatively low key so I think that contributed to why most people were welcoming to the thing.
- Half the infrastructure was already in place for the games while the other half is still being effectively used today

Only big red flags I remember since then were the homeless getting kicked around by the local government a lot and the Olympic Village got neglected for the longest time afterwards. I think there were also cost issues but nothing as bad as what I've seen from others. Am I missing anything else Vancouver GAF?

This is awful. Everything about the Olympics this time around is awful. A shame really because Rio is a great place (and I'm from São Paulo).

Utterly disgusting behaviour, that it'll make a big difference but I won't be watching any of the Olympics now nor will I support any of it.

I have a feeling this will be the lowest-rated, lowest attended Olympics in history. It continues to be an unsafe clusterfuck run by morons with no concern for human well being.

As far as US ratings go they will be pretty good since we can actually watch events live. The past few Summer games have been on tape delay with a lot of prime events happening while Americans are at work.

Yeah those are my thoughts. Once the competition is going, nobody watching is really going to care what a clusterfudge Rio is, pending any tragedy (and in the case of that, ratings will go up)

As far as people actually buying tickets...with Zika/crime, plenty that would have otherwise gone will prolly stay home. On that note, are they still struggling to sell tickets?

That looks bad

From what I can understand, this is the official uniform that medal givers will be wearing.

lol

That's correct. Some high minded fashion asshole picked a talentless stylist's shitstains output. Goes to show how disconnected from reality parts of society are in this country.

What a fucking dumpster fire. And those imbeciles should be held accountable for killing the jaguar.

So the jaguar was still chained up and began walking towards someone, so they shot it?

Am I reading this right?

What in the shit is wrong with people?

They literally plucked a pure wild jaguar out of the forest wilderness, tranquilized it and put it for the photo and then as it started ti regain senses and approached the soldier it was shot dead.

Still amazes me some of the cities chosen to host Olympic Games and just world sporting events in general when there's only a handful of countries in the world that can not only handle the financial burden, but have the infrastructure equipped to handle it and put on a good show.

I mean, Australia or Amercia could host the World Cup or the Olympics almost at a moments notice.

This is not true. The jaguar was from a local zoo, attached to the military compound. It was 17 years old.

The very few news outlets reporting on this in the country (surprise, after all today is fucking soccer day) are talking about possibly suspension for the soldier that shot it, and a fine between $3,000 and $300,000 for the Army Amazon Command – a decision will be made in 30 days – naturally.

Jaguars are the symbol of Manaus (capital of Amazonas, the state where this happened. Mostly covered by the Amazon forest, hence the name.), and are also often paraded as a mascot by the military. Which makes the entire thing even more preposterous, since they ought to have known how to handle the animal and treat it with the respect it deserves.

For the record, the population of jaguars in the Amazon forest has declined by 30% in the last 3 decades.

I understand that the article in the OP wasn't the clearest, but how did you get this sequence of events out of it?
