I have been waiting for Clair Obscur since the reveal trailer. I have been sitting around looking for a game to play for months, but nothing caught my fancy. Medieval, Space Marine 2, System Shock, Resi 4. Nothing could scratch that itch. But one game had caught my eye and I was waiting with bated breath. Finally the time is upon us that I can settle into a stunning, stylistic, western turn-based RPG in Clair Obscur! And it has great reviews! I cannot wait!

But of all of the games that could have been released to stop me playing this exciting new IP….there is the Elder Scrolls Oblivion. It may be an unpopular opinion, but for me, no Bethesda game has given me the feeling of wonder as much as Oblivion. And ever since the PS3 re-release without trophies, I have been waiting for a remaster and trophy support. And damn does it look great!!

Fortunately, I am in the position to be able to buy both, but Clair will certainly be sitting on my shelf waiting for potentially a couple of months.

So GAF, have any of you had the same dilemma? What will you end up playing over the next couple of months?

Hell yeah it will. Microsoft fucked them over. Could have given them a heads up about the Oblivion release. I'm sure they would have moved the date for their game up.

Oblivion will overshadow it without a doubt. The only things that can help Clair Obscur are the overwhelmingly positive reviews and that it is priced competitively. It might grain traction with strong word of mouth. Personally, I'd rather play a new game than a remaster.

It probably will, but at least if you have Game Pass you can easily play both.

Super weird scheduling though for sure, might as well have given Oblivion or Clair Obscur more dev time depending on which one would need it more.

I'll still play Clair Obscur first though, Oblivion remaster will only get better with time as people still find ways to mod it.

Of course. Gamers love to talk about how they want more high quality, original, creative, single player games but always fail to put their money where their mouth is.

Can't imagine Sandfall is happy about this. They got a GOTY candidate it would seem and their launch week looked relatively empty until Oblivion was shadow dropped.

I bought both and am playing both, but a lot of people are going to have to decide on one or the other.

Oblivion performance is apparently rough and Clair Obscure is made by a small studio.

One is a remaster of a classic game. The other is a creative tour de Force that is getting glowing reviews.

I'm doing what I can to support the right game here. Clair Obscure!

Unequivocally. I was going to jump on Clair Obscur right away, but a full Oblivion Remaster? I cannot pass that up. Which sucks - it's not the devs fault they can't compete with my nostalgia. I'm looking forward to digging in once I've finished my Oblivion play through.

Think alot of people planned to play it on Gamepass like me but Oblivion definitely delayed my playthrough.

Stupid gamers will waste their time and money on the remaster of a 20-y game which was already mid at release and bring nothing to the table.

True gamers will favor innovation and risk taking and give their money to the new underdog which is going into uncharted territories.

Unfortunately there are many more stupid gamers than true ones, and this is why the hobby is in such a poor state nowadays.

It doesn't matter. Nowadays every game can gain popularity in an instant.

People will notice CO: E 33 (what the hell, even the abbreviaton is long :messenger_grinning_sweat: ) eventually. There is a saying: Correct course doesn't need hastening. And it seems that Clair is on the right path.

Not me ☺️

I got the Claire Obscur deluxe ed. And some of my recent purchases on PS5 have been:

Yakuza Hawai
Patrick Parabox
Khazan
SMT V Vengeance
RE4 Remake
Path of the Goddess

And I will double dip BG3 soon on PS5 in order to progress beyond act 1, one day. Oh, Unicorn Overlord was my goty last year. So yeah, I want more creative, special games made with passion and vision 😅

It definitely cost it some launch sales. Kind of a dick move from Microsoft, doing that to a small, new studio they're partnering with. However, the reviews are great, so I can see it having strong legs.

I've already bought Clair Obscur and will definitely buy Oblivion remaster but the physical copy isn't available yet.

Why do people say it's a shadow drop, they literally announced with a whole stream, it's more of a insta-drop 🤔

Keep in mind most of you all are on a gaming forum. You're enthusiasts.

Casual gamers saw Oblivion, they remembered Oblivion, that's what they are playing this weekend. A new IP with a frankly weird name isn't going to break through the Oblivion hype as it would have if it had more space on it's own.

It'll be harmed by this initially, but it'll be interesting to see if it has legs in the coming weeks and months.

Not nearly as much as people are saying.

They are two different kind of games with a different look and feel aimed at different audiences in a world with millions upon millions of gamers.

A 92 on metacritic and amazing word of mouth will give this game a great boost. And it'll probably have good legs aswell. It'll also have a great shot to be nominated and maybe win GOTY.

To an extent, of course. Even for folks who will get both via Game pass, it's still two big RPGs releasing within 48 hours of each other competing for the player's time.

I'm playing Oblivion right now and even though I am excited for Expedition 33 as well, it'll have to wait till I play a decent amount of Oblivion first.

Unlikely, the review scores saved the game, saw lots of people saying they were on the fence due to Oblivion but they are getting both

It's impossible for it to not be negatively affected by the release of Oblivion.

92 metacritic with no other significant new releases and it would have dominated coverage and discourse. It should still do ok reviewing that highly, but significantly less well than it would have.

Nah, I assume that what the shadowdrop attempted was to affect to try to counter the combo of:
  • Xbox fanboys angry because of the PS5 release of Forza Horizon 5
  • Positive Marathon alpha impressions
  • Positive Days Gone Remastered release impressions
  • Positive Ghost of Yotei gameplay reveal + release date impressions
Since they signed it for GP they knew Expedition 33 was going to be good and that in Xbox wasn't going to sell almost anything because of being included in GP.

oh, i saw some dumb drama about it.

No.

why?

The 33 game is having insane prise but it's a new IP and i think speaks to OG final fantasy fans that keep bitching about turn-based combat

I bought both. Expedition 33 is pretty cheap on key sites and already launching at a fair price. I think the reviews will help it a lot.

This will be an interesting test to see how much review scores are still relevant, because with a title like that if it didn't have a 90+ I doubt it would sell more than a few concords on PC.

Blue prince probably had a couple hundred followers but thanks to review scores it blew up as much as a non-portal puzzle game probably ever has.

We already see a lot of people saying they are gonna buy this now, who just yesterday weren't paying any attention or were on the fence.

There are better examples of review scores still being relevant, that's just the most recent.

It will definitely get negatively affected by oblivion remaster shadowdrop, question is, and here unfortunately we cant be sure- will it be some minimal impact of 10-15% fewer copies sold, mild impact of 40-60% fewer copies sold or huge impact of 80-90% fewer copies sold.
Cant travel to other universe to test how much of an impact its gonna have unfortunatelly.
Full disclousure i didnt hear about the game till few days ago when i saw review thread and other gaffers stating their concerns- i still didnt watch even 1 review of the game tho, i quickly checked ACG's vid but thats it :D

I was oblivious that Oblivion was out.
Point being, people that care about Oblivion are gonna buy Oblivion regardless and I think very few will cross over to make any meaningful impact.

The delusions are getting stronger, I see.

I don't know how much a turn based RPG would be affected by Oblivion, but maybe it does? They are different games to me. Anyways, I've already played Oblivion in the past, so it can wait.

It's a 3rd party game releasing on competing platforms, MS has no real need to get out of their way w/ their shadow drop plans.

They'll both likely "hurt each other" in the same way, and that's just bizness. How much is anyone's guess, but there will certainly be impact.

Anectdotaly I have about a half dozen friends who bought Oblivion Remaster and are waiting on 33 because of it. However knowing their habits, they will all be buying that within a week lol

It probably will have some impact, but hopefully, it won't be too rough.
I personally prefer ordered it a few weeks ago so I'll be getting it regardless. Also, its not a full priced game (currently £37 ish on Steam and about £27 on the sites like CDKeys) , so that might sway some folks.

I suspect Exp 33's likely audience could quite reasonably be described as a subset of TES' likely audience.
Yeah there is some cross over.

But considering there isn't another game like either coming out for a long time, I suspect those people interested in both will just get the other one when they are finished.

Especially with this game having a 92, it's going to be heavily in GOTY talks. It's the front runner at this point it seems like.

I don't Oblivion remake affect E33 that much. I think Expedition 33 will be a slow burn with long legs, it doesn't have a huge marketing push and it's not based on existing IP, so it was never going to do bonkers out of the gate. it was always going to live or die by word of mouth.

I'm still playing Avowed on Gamepass. I'll need to check out Expedition 33 in-between quests.
wow, its almost as if MS released Avowed so people would be too busy to buy Exp 33

Even Doom coming out next month, damn...if only zero games can release to give this game a break lol /s

If the game gets overshadowed by the Oblivion Remake, it didn't have much staying power and maybe wasn't doing enough to really capture those sales. So I'm sure to degree it could be harmed, but being a bad game is greater harm any any fucking release.

If nothing comes out this year and JUST THIS GAME and lets say the game is dog shit, thats like saying it will get 100 million sales cause , oh nothing else released so gamers HAD TO BUY IT or something dumb like this.

The game first must be actually good to get the sale, if the release of another game is enough to harm it, it wasn't that good in the first place...

GTAVI, Ghost 2, Mafia Old Country, Death Stranding 2 etc all could be coming out on the same day and I'd still buy all 4

All I see here is Exp 33 may not be compelling enough if a remake like this can get people to not buy it, clearly it wasn't doing anything that interesting...
