All I see here is Exp 33 may not be compelling enough if a remake like this can get people to not buy it, clearly it wasn't doing anything that interesting...
Oblivion is a lot of people's favorite game and this remake was a dream for them. So I can understand that.

I mean.. The Mario bro movie made a billion dollars. People went to the theaters to see that instead of movies that are far better. It's not all about quality.. Corporations cash in on familiarity.

Marketing can also play a massive role. These companies aren't spending hundreds of millions to market for nothing. Thankfully word of mouth can be huge nowadays too.

I'm confident this game will succeed regardless

Both are on Gamepass anyways so no one will buy either title on Xbox

But for the other platforms, I don't honestly believe the market for a remaster of a 20 years old game intersects very heavily with the market for a new AA European-made JRPG

But I'm not a Venn Diagram expert so what do I know

Easily but the game should still do fine if it's a great game. I'm not into it so not sure. But Oblivion Remaster is still the best game of this year so far and the best and most fun RPG since 2015.

There's a lot more old games fans in the world than people wanting to support new IPs

Both games are in Gamepass and Steam. I'm curious to see the Steam players counter this evening but I'm quite sure that Expedition 33 numbers will be lower than Oblivion's
Don't complain if there's no new IPs if you don't support them

And by the way, downloading Expedition 33 now

I don't think it will be anywhere close. But I don't think Exp33 could have got close to the numbers Oblivion is doing even if Oblivion hadn't come along.

Even from a PS5 perspective, MS has gone a bit crazy with their releases being so close together. Indy, FH5 and Oblivion all within the space of a few weeks?

That in mind, Expedition 33 has a mountain to climb.

I think the answer to that is yes.

Normies are all talking about Oblivion, and only hardcore JRPG types are talking about Expedition 33. It's the same price with nostalgia for a past hit title.

Even Gamepass traffic is gonna be compromised to some extent by this probably.

However I think MS had no real options there. Theyre releasing DOOM next month so they can't delay Oblivion there, and they have The Outer Worlds 2 coming out later this year so that's out of the question.

November would ordinarily be an excellent month to release it in, but I have a feeling they're trying to avoid the GTA6 train.

Theyre trying to juice the numbers as much as possible for the next quarter.

Preordered this game for the ps5 after IGN,s preview last month. Will start playing tonight and after all the really positive reviews i seem to have made the right choice. Oblivion is cool but it is still just the same old game with new makeup. And to be honest for me atleast nothing really beats a really good turn based RPG.

Can't imagine Sandfall is happy about this. They got a GOTY candidate it would seem and their launch week looked relatively empty until Oblivion was shadow dropped.

I bought both and am playing both, but a lot of people are going to have to decide on one or the other.

With gamepass you can play both.

I bought red dead and Alan Wake the same day.

I mean, I'll still probably get it but it will likely be on discount by the time I'm done with Oblivion. Probably would have suffered a hell of a lot more if it didn't score so amazingly.

Yes, obviously, I posted about it a couple of times before the reviews of Claire Obscure dropped and despite the critical acclaim it doesn't change the fact M$ fucked them big time with Oblivion getting massive mindshare, it is what it is. My physical copy of Expedition 33 just arrived, can't wait to dig in.

They are both on gamepass so 🤷‍♂️

But like JRPG style games are just not for me anymore. Where WRPG's are. Plus like, to me it's a new Elder Scrolls game because I never played oblivion.

Phil once again showing he lacks even the most basic understanding of video games. Women bitch about men lacking emotional intelligence but this is exactly what this is. Just completely oblivious to your responsibilities as a publisher to a dev who gave you a gamepass game.

My feeds are full of oblivion on a day a literal goty contender was reviewed. The damage is done.

Getting both, but I'll focus on the FRPG since I've already played Oblivion after all. Plus it seems like the remaster could benefit of a few patches, so no rush.

Not everyone wants to rent games. I don't default to game pass every time even if available.

Thats fair, but plenty of people rent films and games. I see it as a positive that you can subscribe to a service and have access to both of these games the same week.

Game Pass is only a small part of the equation. These games are on PS and Steam where GP doesn't apply. So obviously if we are going to talk about how Oblivion affects Expedition 33, it isn't about Game Pass.

OP here! After reading a lot of reviews and hearing there may be potential spoilers, I've changed my mind. I'll be playing Clair Obscure over Oblivion. Oblivion will be there waiting for me anytime, I know I will get to it eventually!

From a Game Pass perspective, absolutely.

They're both installed and I'll probably dabble with both, but I don't have time to get stuck into both - unfortunately for E33, Oblivion was here first, and I'm surprised by how much I'm into it. I thought I'd get the nostalgia hit for a couple or hours and be done, but I'm still playing.

Of course, neither are getting a direct sale from me, so it's a competition for time.

Yes, and it's a damn shame because it's THE SAME EXACT GAME. LIke, they even proved yesterday THIS IS OBLIVION BASIC GAME RUNNING with a new UE5 coat of paint. This is why it's also not a remake, they just applied a layer on top of 20-year old game.

If the game gets overshadowed by the Oblivion Remake, it didn't have much staying power and maybe wasn't doing enough to really capture those sales.
You drunk?

It's a remake of an ES game, at a time when the last game released more than 10 years ago and ESVI is MIA.

Played the tutorial on Gamepass then bought it on Steam, now replaying, it's just that good :)
I never buy games that i can play for "free" on Gamepass, so take that as you will :D

The delusions are getting stronger, I see.
Sure Jan, MS decides to shadowdrop the remake of the Skyrim 'prequel' the same day of the release of very likely the best 3rd party game they are releasing in GP this year destroying their sales, visibility and probably the relationship with this new promising team that isn't any threat to them because of a random coincidence, or because of potatoes wanted to destroy that team.

Sure, had nothing to do with their direct competitor having multiple releases and announcements that same week, including the first public release of the (formerly the most important MS studio) Bungie as Sony subsidiary. Sure xDD

Yeah. It was just a coincidence, wink-wink

Let's be honest here, Oblivion is a low effort reskin of a game that a lot of people didn't love. It's selling for nostalgia and also to the crowd that was too young or just missed out on it the first time. Most players will get a few hours in and fall off.

Clair Obscure is a new goty candidate that is turn based, single player, not woke, and has a very high metacritic.

Of course Clair Obscure will be fucked by dumping their buggy reskin(worse than a user mod) on top of it.

The real story here is how inept, obtuse, ignorant, stupid, dumb, low effort, low energy and woke Microsoft management is.

I'm sorry, I actually plan on playing Oblivion too, but let us not pretend it isn't just a reskin. WTF were they thinking cannibalizing themselves like square enix? MS needs to reexamine themselves. We give the other companies shit for being too expensive but at least we don't have to see factions within the companies vying for attention. Ugh. Vying factions gives them too much credit. I bet they didn't even realize these dates were so close. Management is asleep at the wheel at Microsoft. Let me repeat that. Management is asleep at the wheel at Microsoft.

I am going to eventually get both and will get Clair Obscure first… just not at launch as the backlog is too massive for the moment and I have bunch of other stuff to play.

Oblivion looks rough performance wise and still has the same damn bugs as the OG release so modding is going to be crucial. I am going to give it a few months to percolate. Not like there is any hurry or story spoilers here, lol.

Plus I want to see if they bothered to fix level scaling, stupid leveling system and god damn repetitive Oblivion Gates and their spawning rates. I still haven't seen a straightforward answer on this one.

They are probably going to eat a little into each other's base, but I don't see one ruining the other. Totally different genres and one is a remaster.

It's not going to get to 1/3 of Oblivion. And that's unfortunate.

I think that 50k concurrent players on Steam is a solid number. Usually CCU means 10% of all sales on Steam. Gamepass money are secured, and my rise depending on how many users download the game. It will probably do okay on PS as well. My completely baseless assumption is that the game will sell over 1 million copies. The only question is what the studio expects in terms of sales.

1 million I have in mind as well.

Should be well above their expectations I imagine.

I'm definitely picking up Expedition 33.
I don't really care much for Obvlivion, though I'll probably buy it in a year or so when it's sub $30.

But yes I think it will sadly affect the sales of Clair Obscur.
As much as gamers like complaining about remaster, remakes and the lack of new IP, many of them love nothing more than existing IP and nostalgic remakes/remasters.
