How many times have we posted a review of an ASUS Transformer tablet only to read comments that say, "Put Win8 on it and I'll buy it." Well, folks, it's time to put your money where your mouth is. ASUS just announced the Tablet 600, a Transformer-like slate running Windows RT. Like any Android-powered Transformer, this one packs a quad-core Tegra 3 chip, except it has twice the RAM (2GB). At the center of it all is a 10.1-inch (1366 x 768) IPS+ display with viewing angles similar to what you'll find on current Transformer tablets. Around back, it has an auto-focusing 8-megapixel camera with an LED flash, complemented by a 2-megapixel shooter up front. Other specs include WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and your usual array of sensors, including GPS, a gyroscope, e-compass and, last but not least, NFC. And guess what? We've already got hands-on. Bear with us as we upload photos and video -- connectivity is slow here!

Two displays in one tablet? Yes you can. ASUS' new TAICHI series packs displays on both the front and the rear, letting you use the device in a variety of configurations. In 'notebook' mode, you can use TAICHI with a backlit QWERTY keyboard and trackpad. Once you close the lid, however, it's stylus time. It includes the latest Intel Ivy Bridge Core i7 processor, SSD, FHD/Super IPS+ and, naturally, dual cameras. Despite the display duo, both the 11.6-inch and 13.3-inch configurations are as thin and light as the Zenbook line.

Asus really got some mad scientists. I feel sorry for their marketing department, trying to turn that thing into sales.

More like "Instant sharing with back to back neck pain", amirite?

Awesome, a Windows 8 hybrid without the desktop. I think I'll pass on that one.

The Transformer Book looks good though, as stupid as the name is.

If ya wanna compete with ipad, ya gotta compete on price >.<

.
THe only way to compete with iPad is to have awfully shitty specs, kind of like iPad has.

All those x86 hybrids are aimied at notebooks users far more than at iPad ones.

I, uh, thought we already had this?

Asus unveils Transformer Book Windows 8 convertible notebook

2012-06-04_00-57-28-1s1xdd.jpg

Asus has revealed a number of new Windows 8 hardware offerings today, but it also has a convertible notebook planned for later this year. The Transformer Book is powered by Intel's 3rd generation Core i7, i5, and i3 processors alongside 4GB of RAM, USB 3.0, and Nvidia graphics. Asus is shipping the Transformer Book with a full HD IPS display in 11.6, 13, and 14-inch options.

A detachable full-size keyboard is available on the Transformer Book, allowing it to switch into a Windows 8 tablet for mobility.

And another, more pro tablet.

Asus announces Tablet 810: 11.6-inch Windows 8 tablet with Intel Atom processor

2012-06-04_00-53-21-1kzd4e.jpg

If you're not interested in a transforming Asus Windows RT tablet then the company is also revealing its Tablet 810 Windows 8 device today. The Tablet 810 will ship with an 11.6-inch Super IPS+ panel, 8-megapixel rear camera, and Intel Atom processor for the all important traditional desktop apps compatibility in Windows 8.

Asus has also packed in a Wacom digitizer with stylus support, alongside an extremely thin form factor: just 8.7mm thick (thinner than Apple's latest iPad). The Tablet 810 will also ship with a 2-in-1 mobile dock with a hidden hinge design.

How did we already have that?

Also that first one is more pro than the second one. The first is the fully ivy bridge intel processor the second is the pretty bad gimped Atom intel processor.

Of all the tablet/laptop hybrids shown by Asus the Transformer Book is the one with the best specs. The 810 has a way worse processor and a somewhat weaker screen but it has digitizer pen support and a better camera.

But in terms of processor, screen rez, RAM, etc the Transformer Book wins.

Cheebo, can you not read? The slide says "ultra-performance with next gen Intel Atom processor."

Ultra.
Performance.

Beat that, Ivy Bridge.

Plus, it got a Wacom stylus.

Uh Ivy Bridge is the superior processor to Atom. By a significant margin.

Not to mention the tranformer book has full hd ips vs super ips + which beats super ips.

That's not what the slide says!
Huh? It says ultra performance with the next gen atom processor. It's talking up the new atom processor which is better than last gens. Intel already revealed the new atom processor like they did ivy bridge, atom is their more low-end budget line compared to ivy bridge. Atom
Has continued to improve but it's the lower end line compared to their flagship ivy bridge.

Woooaaah, did anyone else feel that?

Isnt ipad eating notebook market up though?

It isn't actually. Sales are still growing regularly. And laptops overall sales still manage to make iPad look almost like a niche device. At most iPad is slowing laptops growth, but not killing it completely. I think most manufactuers are more concerned about makign their existing notebook users keep buying their products that going after iPad users.

I gave the new Release Preview version a twirl in my VMWare unit. Here are some quick impressions.
  • It looks good and it runs fast. Even on inferior hardware settings the OS is rather snappy. However, when things chug, I do not get any indication - no loading icons/cursors - and that blows.
  • Cannot remove the Hotmail/Live email account from Mail after you use it once to login. I made a separate @live.com account just for Win8 and there is no way I am using it for email. Gmail is perfect for my email needs. However, I can only add it as a secondary account into the Metro Mail application, it is a bitch to configure, the folders are messed up and it is difficult to access.
  • Haven't tried the Xbox application yet, but I have another @hotmail.com account for that. Am I fucked with that like with email?
  • Weird aliasing issues with large text on my screen.
  • Weird highlights on buttons and links.
  • Desktop mode is a joke. I mean, isn't it? I am very much a keyboard person and at home I use a dual monitor setup. My primary Windows work is done using the keyboard (Start > Run > shortcut name > Enter) is still the fastest way to get around this thing. I have an entire array of two or three letter shortcuts that I use to launch stuff that I use daily. Now that the Start menu is gone, where should I get access to them? I am not going to clutter my desktop with them.
  • The Metro applications are mostly a joke too. On a regular desktop MS would be smart to either disable Metro altogether or at least scale all the GUI elements to suite the resolution gap. I do not need a 400px URL bar in Metro IE. I do not need 30% of my screen taken up with folder names in Metro Mail. et cetera.
There are still things I like about it, but the focus is messed up. On a desktop, fuck the Metro stuff.

Whoooooooo!

This is basically exactly what I wanted.

Transformer form factor

Wacom Support.

This is going to be awesome. I just hope the processor is up to snuff.

Ivy-Bridge CPU
4 GByte RAM
64 GByte SSD
Two USB 3.0
Gigabit-Ethernet
Mini-HDMI
2-in-1 card reader
802.11 b/g/n WiFi
Bluetooth 4.0

No price or date.

It's hilarious that they used Windows 7 + that popular Metro Rainmeter skin instead of the W8 startscreen. Really disingenuous.

TIf you are talking about the picture in the above post that specs are for the Transformer Book. The 810 with stylus support has more Netbook level specs (2 GB vs 4 GB RAM, Atom processor vs. ivy bridge, IPS+ vs Full HD IPS..etc)

I don't get why people here are excited about the 810. Wacom Digitizer is nice but the Atom processor is a joke for any serious use.

I still can't believe I'm gonna be able to run full fledged photoshop on a tablet with this kind of form factor soon and Wacom stylus support. I'm pretty excited.

This could work, eventually.
I love it. Only problem is my main draw for using Windows are the better games options. I don't think I'll be able to play any recent games on this thing. I really want something with a discreet GPU that also has this kind of flexibility

I'm not looking to play BF3, just stuff like Guild Wars 2, Diablo 3, the like

I totally don't understand the point of this one.

Really? It's just a convenient way to access the tablet form factor on an ultra book.

I would be totally fine with a slight increase in thickness if it meant handling games. As I said before, Alienware needs to do a tablet.

I thought the whole point of Wacom tablets was how refined the touch sensitivity can be, are you saying that just with a stylus they can get same level of finesse in painting?

If it is that good I might have to buy a stylus, maybe I am misunderstanding you though

I guess so. Seems like it would easier and cheaper to me to just find a way to flip the tablet and still be able to attach it to the dock instead of having two screens.

Well the point of Wacom tablets is to have pressure sensitivity built into the screen when using a stylus. It's like having a cintiq (but probably not as accurate) on the go, so it is tremendously appealing to artists. Being able to run full windows art software on it also has great potential.

The Verge commentors are saying the new Atom CPU isn't good enough for a lot of heavy photoshop work.

He was joking, but they are still atom chips, I dont know what people were expecting, these are the lowest power/usage, they are like the ARM chips.

I know he is but I am sure he is confusing some people. A lot don't get that atom is basically a netbook level cpu.

Yeah, the 810 is basically a netbook with detachable screen. The Transformer Book is the ultrabook level machine with a detachable screen.

.

I think it's a waste. I mean..there should be a way to design such device so you can use both screens next to eachother, making it one big superscreen.

Well, how good are the atom chips?

Some of my work in Photoshop/illustrator/Indesign can go towards 500mb-1gb. Plus alot of CPU intensive work too.

If you can't get it done on a netbook you won't be able to get it done on the 810. It's Asus's netbook transformer basically.
