Lemon Angel Project 01-02
So next up on my backlog was something about as far away from high-profile fantasy war as I could get. In the year 2017... which certainly must have seemed more distant when the show was actually airing... a group of computer-generated AI idols blink out of existence by a virus and a group of real ones have to replace them.
I find it interesting that this show can trace its lineage back to
Cream Lemon, the OVA series that gave the (Western) fandom the term "lemon" in the first place. The sexiness has been toned down, but it's still there a bit. Having Minori Chihara voice a dark-skinned, semi broken-Japanese girl isn't the kind of role I'm used to from her, and it's clear that Tomo is voiced by a gravure idol. When a pro like Ami Koshimizu is acting alongside her, the difference can't be more obvious.
If there's any show it reminds me of so far, I'd say it's
AKB0048, with the sci-fi-ish elements and the opening stages focusing on auditions. Its links to its source material are few, but as far as idol anime go, it's got a little more going for its premise than
Lovedol.
WUG reminded me that this show existed in the first place.
The opening's catchy, if a little retro-feeling, and the ED by Nao Nagasawa is nice. I knew she was sort of a singer in Hurricaneger, but I had no idea she was briefly one in real life too.
