Winter-Spring 2014 Anime |OT3| People incapable of guilt usually do have a good time

Heartcatch has a lot of great things going for it. Tsubomi and Erika are great main characters, the overarching plot is well done, the episodes devoted to it are all great with surprisingly good action, and by the latter part the show fires on all cylinders. However, like I said, the rigid formula holds the show back and makes it a chore to watch before it starts to loosen up. The stock also fails to live up to the hard work put into animating them.

Whenever I read about Heartcatch, I always got the vibe that its good main cast and villains overshadowed any weariness that may have resulted from its rigid formula. It wasn't much of turn off for me because of those supposed strengths quite honestly. You saying that Happiness Charge has shown that it can do what the former did just as well and more sounds much more appealing, since it isn't just praise with a caveat of trappings common within the franchise attached to it.

Don't you hate it when you get a one dimensional protagonist in a anime who doesn't know what the hell he's doing and all you want to do is curse him.. If you can name any who would it be and from what anime is it?

Yeah, see this is why I couldn't get into Heartcatch. I only saw 12 episodes, and this is how I felt watching every single one of them.

I'm actually preparing another post as to why I think another MOTW show that I watched, GaoGaiGar, does the MOTW thing better than Heartcatch. But I'll save that for later.

I might check out Happiness Charge because of that huge post though Hito, and massive props to you for taking the time to write that.

I'm actually starting to wonder if that was the real reason I stopped rewatching Heartcatch.

I mean with Splash Star, I'm pretty much both working and gaming more, so I'm not really putting any time into anime outside of like... two days of the week (and found neat things about SS as well)

I've managed to avoid knowing almost anything about JoJo's, aside from the poses, so to see it start in a... relatively normal setting was a shock.

I really like it so far. Dio's an asshole!

I take Baby Steps is more like a Cross Game type story where it doesn't get technical about sports, but uses it as a setting for character/relationship drama?

Not really. The manga gets pretty deep into the tennis, but does it in a refreshingly straightforward way.

Nope. Not at all. It gets pretty technical about tennis. I'm going to go ahead and say this now, but outside of Great Teacher Onizuka since it's not relatively 'recent', this is the manga I've been enjoying the most for a while now. It has surpassed Silver Spoon. In fact I think Silver Spoon is a good comparison. While it doesn't go into the world of tennis as deep as SS goes into the country life and farming and all the agricultural industry, Baby Steps' name is really fitting: both newbies' and the protagonist's introduction into the world of Tennis.

I'm pretty far into the manga now. What curlyfriski said about the refreshingly straightforward approach is no joke. Like I cannot genuinely think a chapter in the manga where I haven't been heavily invested in his game or, when he's not playing, loving every single recurring character. It does this with a simple solution: little to no drama. I shit you not. The characters are all pretty great, to the point where you even feel bad when he beats a rival because you can't help but seeing their side and their reasons for playing.

Also because I need to mention it, yes the two protagonist make two great romantic leads. Just like with the FMA manga (and brotherhood), you know it's there. They're both super positive and always smiling and it's freaking contagious. I'm glad that (manga spoilers)
they eventually start dating. Because they make one of the happiest and cutest couples I've read
. I'm glad somebody decided to write a story with romance, and sports for that matter, with no melodrama. Fucking hell.

Calling it right now, Baby Steps is my anime of the season if it sticks with the manga.

Really liked this.

Looks like this is a solid season for sports anime between this and Haikyuu and Ace still airing.

I guess I should watch that cycling series.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Rebellion Story

So I'm finally able to watch it. Man, I could die happily (at least until the announce another Madoka production) what a great 2 hours, it was like having adolescence all over again, a good laugh here, a smile there, and of course tears were shed, what a roller coaster.

KyokoxSayaka was so good, and when Kyoko remembered how Sayaka dies it was so heartbreaking and heart warming at the same time, Nagisa was a great addition although I must agree that she was there just to ship Mami with someone but hey, at least the pulled off her really good, I couldn't give any fucks to Homura becoming a demon, I have never been a fan of her and I always found her love to be completely selfish unlike Madoka's selfless love, and what a great end scene with Kyube as Homura's lil' b&/$%*, . My only complaint is why they will have to be enemies in the future, I know they both represent completely opposite sides but I don't know, I don't like that idea at all.

And after years I decided to give PreCure a try and It was quite satisfying, I have only watched first episode of Happiness charge PreCure and it was really fun, I didn't give PreCure a chance before because of all the last seasons ( I know all of them are stand alone but if I like the most recent one I'm sure I would like to watch the other ones and I really don't know where/how to watch them) I have the same problem with DoReMi which I loved to watch until they stopped airing them in my country : (

Us folk still watching Mahouka will have to hide beneath the floor of AnimeGAF in hopes they don't find us by asking many questions and getting us to confess.

AnimeGAF is Christoph Waltz.

So you're saying that the persecution that Mahouka fans suffer on NeoGAF is akin to that of Jews in WWII?

Oh, here's a better description and cast list for that Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji (Wolf Girl & Black Prince) manga that just got an anime announced:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2014-04-08/wolf-girl-and-black-prince-shojo-manga-gets-tv-anime
The story centers around Erika Shinohara, a vain 16-year-old girl who tells her friends about her romantic exploits, but she actually has no boyfriend. She claims that a handsome boy in a candid photo is her boyfriend, but it turns out that boy is a schoolmate named Kyōya Sata. She has no choice but to make him her fake boyfriend. Unfortunately, Sata may look like a sweet person, but he is actually an ultra-black-hearted sadist. Sata takes advantage of Erika's weakness and treats her like his dog.
Kanae Itou and Takahiro Sakurai are the leads. Supporting cast members are Ai Kayano, Mariya Ise, Mikako Komatsu, Nobunaga Shimazaki, Yoshitsugu Matsuoka, Yoshimasa Hosoya, and Ayumu Murase.

Seems to be the season of weird hairstyles.

But besides that, it wasn't bad. Not as high action as other sports series but still seems interesting enough to want to keep going.

One Week Friends ep.1

Quite the lovely atmosphere in this show. A decent first episode to set up the story; the challenge will be where things will go from here and if they can keep it interesting.

Oh hey it's Tenchi. Lol at him yelling at her when she was plotting in the rafters and her yelling "Sorry!"

Ahh so you're problem is the ending huh? I'll attempt to explain: recall back when Homura was chatting with Madoka (before Madoka regained her memories). From Madoka, Homura came to the conclusion that GodMadoka wasn't what Madoka truly wanted/or should be. This is why in the ending Homura split Madoka from her godlike self and rewrote the universe. It still fits in Homura's motivations because her ultimate goal is to save Madoka.

Otherwise I'm glad you enjoyed the movie!

I CAME PREPARED TO THIS CONVERSATION.

ENSIGN KOU URAKI. This shit bumbles his way through Stardust Memory (which is already a bad plot) and do you know what I learned about him? Motherfucker doesn't like carrots. Like, I cannot tell you anything else about this guy. He's just. Yeah. Tip of the iceberg, though.

This piece of shit was for a very, very long time the worst main character in a Mecha anime I had ever seen. Lucky for Shinn Asuka of Gundam SEED Destiny, SDFM's Hikaru Ichijo (TV version) turns out to be worse. Shinn's actions make exponentially less sense as the series goes on, and as far as I can tell his only real goals are: WAAAAH U KILLED MY SISTER KAGAAAAAAAARRRIIIII and HOW MUCH JIZZ CAN I SHOOT ALL OVER THIS GUY AFTER I KILL HIS FRIENDS?

But really you could boil Shinn down to this noseless, screaming horror who incoherently shouts, screams, cries and bitches for 50 episodes until Kira and Athrun beat the shit out of him. For as much as Kira gets blamed for crying, at least he did shit other than that. Shinn's eyes are like fucking faucets.

If you stripped Sousuke Sagara and Iori Sei of every trait that made them interesting and combined their boiled down archetypes to a gunpla loving child-soldier and then drained that concept of any novelty or entertainment value well before the halfway point of the series, you'd have Setsuna. All 00 Gundam's Setsuna cares about is being Gundam and that's something that is neither well explained nor well thought out. It just is his goal.

Hibiki Kanzaki is Frank West if Frank West were the biggest loser ever. Like holy shit. All he cares about is "The Scoop!" Do yourself a favor and never watch Macross II. Even with two girlfriends Hibiki still only thinks about his Scoop.

Mobile Suit Gundam AGE is the charming story of Adolf Hitler's establishment of the Eternal Reich. Hitler, as you might imagine, only has two goals: First, murder all the Space Jews he can, even though they already live in Space Auschwitz. Second: Bend time to fuck a little girl. Yes, Adolf Hitler is a pedophile AND the hero of Level 5's beloved Gundam show. Somehow people will still tell you that this pedo nazi propaganda is somehow better than Destiny.

Both Michel and Cleo are awful protagonists, but Cleo is the one whose goals make no fucking sense the entire series. He's just like "I have to be a HUGE bitch right now and even though it defies all reason I WILL be justified in 7 episodes!" To be perfectly honest, by the end of the series I was rooting for Evil Emperor Betty to win.

The entire Human race is a worthless sack of shit in Attack on Titan, but ESPECIALLY Eren Jaeger. Holy fuck what is even the point of this piece of shit? To cry and bitch until Mikasa bails him out? AGAIN? Fuck off, Eren. You're nearly as bad as the pacing of the hellspawned show that shat you out.

I WISH Kirito had a one track mind, because then at least his actions would make sense. But NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Kirito has a no track mind. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the "Beater"'s super power at some point. I mean, "Oh I should rescue my wife but I think I'll spend time going on dates with my little sister and not telling her I don't want to fuck her." And "Oh sure this guy held me prisoner in an online death game and murdered people en masse BUT I WILL PRAISE HIM IN THE FINAL BATTLE.

God Kirito is so bad that I get mad when people compare him to Batman because it doesn't make Batman sound that good.

B19b3Wp.jpg

Hazuki of Yami, the Hat and the Book Traveler. Her goal is to find and probably rape her sister, considering how forceful she is about it. In the end she winds up pregnant with the sister she wanted to fuck. And pancakes. In fact, Hazuki's one-track pursuit of Eve is the ONLY thing that's consistent throughout the series. For what that is worth.

RomJTmO.jpg

Earth Maiden Arjuna's protagonist has literally no idea what she is supposed to do or how to do it for basically the entire series. In her defense, Kawamori refuses to tell either her or the audience and basically forces her at gunpoint into doing the opposite of what she is supposed to for most of the show.

I still hated her by the end.

SAO2 is going to cause a massive backlash since many people enjoyed it due to Kirito-kun hooking up with a girl so relatively quickly even though it's a harem genre.

Many don't realize it'll pull a Bakemonogatari and I'll be awaiting their delicious tears when what's her face doesn't show up for the whole new season except for like 2 scenes and they entirely focus on the new heroine.

yeeeeeeeees. their delicious tears

that was the only thing I liked of the first season so my tears will join theirs

Seitokai Yakundomo OVA 1

So there's seriously a character that very clearly has a dildo up her at all times in a 4koma shounen series?

Well alright then.

The good thing about Monogatari, though, is SS SPOILERS
Kaiki dismantling Araragi's harem piece by piece.

I think that's part of what made me not enjoy the book so much (the other being its about a shooter and I care not for shooters). I wanted more of the Kirito/Asuna relationship, especially since desparately trying to get back together is what part two of S1 was all about. All I really got was a brief segment when they were out together, which I liked.

Mangaka-san to Assistant-san to 1

Typical perverted comedy. I learned my lesson from Seitokai Yakuindomo so I will pass on this even though it's short.

Just going through first episode of everything in this season plus this series didn't seem like one with continuity.

I loooove this style. Hidamari or like Baka to Test maybe. Its groovy.

I'm trying to remember an anime I watched the first episode long ago with a friend. It had something to do with making bread, and the main guy had "gold hands" and could make a great bread because of it. Does anyone knows it?

Yakitate! Japan is so awesome. One of the longest series I actually liked enough to complete.
the reactions to the bread recipes are absolute gold.

What episode I last commented on? 3? 4? anyways, some good shit, latest episode number 11 has been hype, lots of action, animation top notch.

It's a arguement if SAO is really a true harem anime or not, all these girls on his dick, but he expressed literally nothing else to them but kindness, except for his one true waifu, most of the other girls didnt even show up past their arc, so it was just kirito beign some dude chicks swoon after in the end.

That's pretty standard for harem set-ups, besides which, SAO
results in him going to a special school with like 6 girls who are in love with him.

Really? I thought people enjoyed it because it was such an idiotic show it was fun to take the mick out of. Why would I watch it to support Kirito getting a girl? That's like the most idiotic reason I've heard to watch it. You never wish him happiness.

Excessively hammy! And entertainingly so, like some distillation of 80s or at least 80s animation/manga anyway, and at any rate shows no restraint and relishes in it, in most anything else it'd just annoy the hell out of me but it's part of the charm here, probably because the pacing was damn fast so it wasn't really dragging things out. Now I wonder if Crunchyroll will put up all of Battle Tendency at once or break it up into two parts, so they do 9/9/8 episodes or whatever.

The site says "Part 2: Battle Tendency will be added with episode Stardust Crusaders episode 2." so I'd assume it'd go up all at once.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking, but it seems a little odd to do 9 episodes one week then 17 the next. Eh, whatever, the sooner we can be caught up for Stardust Crusaders the better.
