Yea it's not a big indicator, but it just is odd to me seeing my social media account and only one or two people running out to see WW. While any Marvel movie, everyone is checking in day 0 and splooging about it all over the place. It just kinda has me worried

Eh I don't think it means much. I really only had people on my twitter talking about GotG 2 during the first weekend after that watched it.

I've already seen people who watched it yesterday that were hype for it and I think that WOM will push others to see if.

Marvel can't even top a billion without Iron Lad

If only =(

Young Avengers > Avengers

None of this makes it any less weird given the respective histories of the two properties.

Regardless of how low tier Guardians were the Marvel name and goodwill sold the movie,
and then quality/enjoyment pushed it to the level its at.

Star Wars could make a movie about Greedo and it would do better than a Trek for example.

USD 12M first screenings and opening day.

Don't know how credible, because it came from Zaddy's girl on twitter.

$12M in China is accurate, but it includes service fees and the May 31st sneaks. $10.3M without those.

Wonder Woman should open to around $30M in China. Maybe closer to $35M with the service fees if holds are good.

Pirates 5 had a huge second weekend drop in China as expected. I think around 80% Fri-Fri without going back to confirm last week's number.

Watched the film today in
Glasgow, UK
, it was a midday screening and it was easily 90% full. Also, again anecdotally, I overheard two women in the audience, who weren't together, use the word 'empowering' as they left.

This definitely feels like it's going to have a huge opening in the UK this weekend.

I am surprised you still into comics. That is like being given a gun and shoved into the front lines of a war with no training.

I started with The Crossing, the Clone Saga, the post-Claremont X-Men and issues 1, 6 and 12 of Crisis on Infinite Earths. I was born on the battlefield.

Wasn't Iron Lad Kang's son from the future? Or was he young Kang from the future? And didn't he fuse with someone to become Vision and became leader of the Young Avengers?

He's young Kang. His armor becomes Vision somehow. I don't remember the details, it's been a while...

Yup. It will probably remain ahead of everything else for at least a decade, if not multiple decades.

My poor SW. I was sadly mistaken..

Forgot about Marvel.

However.. give it time. Give it time. Although we might be waiting a while. I think it's gotta make up for like a 3 or 4 billion gap, lol.

I wonder if Marvel saw the success of Get Out and thought maybe they should go a little harder on the race aspects. It's basically the only time I wish BP was a DC film with Coogler and the People v. OJ writer working at the helm. This needs to go all in on colonization and eurocentrism and Afrofuturism but Marvel won't allow it.

The fact they got the guy from the race episodes of OJ makes me hopeful there'll be some at least though.

Damn you cam in hot. My first comicbooks was the Marvel Handbook that had moonknight in it. A crazy dude going around smashing heads open with a golden ankh will never not be funny

I like to imagine Black Panther is one big apology for relegating black men to the best friend role, and black women to the... well we'll see with Valkyrie. They should let Coogler work. The cast is great. The premise is great. I have faith it'll be up there with Wonder Woman.

This is the first MCU film with a legit acclaimed writer right? I'm not entirely sure but the guy wrote the best episodes of People v. OJ. I really want it to be radical.

Saw WW.

Jokes aside, if any superhero film deserves a billion it's that. If you have daughters, take them to see it please. DC Captain America'd that shit.

Marvel doing 2-3 films a year doesn't allow for much catching up. This Year's Star Wars might top GotG2 + Thor 3 combined, but probably only by a bit.

Yeah I was just thinking about that. The only thing I can think of is how long each brand is gunna last, in terms of success. Decades down the road. But yeah I agree that for now there's no feasible way for SW to catch up.

Then that sounds a bit disappointing.

UPDATE, Friday, 11:50 PM: Midday figures show Warner Bros/DC’s Wonder Woman flying toward a $34 million-$37.5 million Friday, with a three-day projection of $86M on the low end and a potential shot at breaking into the low-to-mid-$90M range. This is a similar box office sphere where Disney/Marvel launched Doctor Strange launched ($32.6M first day, $85M for the weekend) and Guardians Of The Galaxy ($37.8M, $94.3M weekend), so a very healthy start for a new superhero franchise.

I'm sure WB would be happy with anything in that range when you include the positive WOM after their last two movies.

Friday numbers always include previews.

The high end estimate could hit $100M opening weekend with a great Saturday, but I wouldn't take that as a given. $40M Fri would give more wiggle room.

This is what needed to happen. DC needed their Captain America moment.

Excited to see this tomorrow.

Hope this does well enough that Marvel ends up kicking themselves for sleeping on their own female heroines for so long.

...Bah, who am I kidding? They don't give a shit, they're making more money than God either way.

"Which weird obscure heroes can we use next to make almost a billion dollars? You look good, Forbush Man. Get in here."

I think there's an argument to be made that Marvel doesn't have a Wonder Woman-esque character. Everyone already knows Wonder Woman.

Ant-Man and Guardians were successful, despite being unknowns, because they both brought something unique to the table. What Marvel female heroes fit under that umbrella? Storm is with Fox, Spider-Woman might have been an issue with Sony, Scarlet Witch was clearly going to be an Avenger before being in a solo movie, etc. Captain Marvel/Ms. Marvel is the obvious choice and it's been in the works for a while now.

(And I have faith in it. Brie Larson is going to kill it as Carol.)

The only one that really made sense up until now is Black Widow, and yes, I think it should have happened by now. I posted this in another thread but I had three reasons for wanting Wonder Woman to be a success:

1) I want more female-led superhero movies.

2) Wonder Woman is a great character. DC has many great characters and if Wonder Woman is a success, hopefully they would see what works and go with that for the future of the DCEU.

3) I want it to light a fire under Marvel, leading to them moving forward with a Black Widow solo film. Lower budget, with a story focused on a spy mission that pushes the PG-13 rating. No risk involved in that at all. It would make a damn good amount of money.
