The problem with a Matrix revival/reboot/remake/rewhatever is that we're talking about a R-rated franchise. I don't think WB would revive it as a new R-rated blockbuster. The risk is too great. That puts it in the same playing field of Die Hard and Terminator - PG-13 sequels/reboots/revivals/rewhatevers of a traditionally R-rated franchise. Not a lot of great success there...

When it comes to studios doing REALLY fucking stupid/insane shit, Warner Brothers is king.

Big budget reboot of Mad Max? Kept it R? Sure
Massive budget adaptation of some random manga? With Tom Cruise? Sure
They just don't give a shit, they'll try anything

The matrix was so close to being PG-13 that I think they could downgrade the rating without the follow up appearing watered down.

Matrix is way too much a product of it's time, both in terms of influence, social and artistic and where the creators were back then

I can't even imagine how garbs a modern reboot would be, and surely without the Ws involvement

No way it would have ever been less than R considering the wanton slaughter of the Popo. Especially today.

a JJ Abrams matrix would be one of the most confusing movies of all time. I couldn't even imagine trying to piece together what the hell happened with him editing it.

Yeah I think The Matrix just would never work as a reboot.

It was a "perfect moment" situation that gave us a classic action movie that shook up the genre and technology at the time.

The sequels were pretty bad overall and I don't know what you do to actually make the series better.

You forgot Jupiter Ascending. (I think they want to forget too)

Edge of Tomorrow is based on a novel, not a manga. /nitpick

smh at y'all making me want to rewatch the maxtrix trilogy with all this talk. Thought I was done with it. Guess it's good I have it on vudu.

Jupiter is the worst case scenario for that shit. American Sniper is probably the best case scenario. Max and Edge are the middleground.

I don't know how to read, why are you making fun of me duckroll?!

Jupiter Ascending could have had a chance if the Ws didn't decide to make a an adaptation of a young adult novel that didn't actually exist and cast actually capable leads.

Also should have had more Dinosaur people

Tales from the Matrix: Trinity Rising

A JJ Abrams Film

Starring a Strong Female Lead

Guest Starring A Bunch of Lensflares

I don't know how the force awakens was confusing to anyone, but....

Edit: Force Awakens spoiler
Okay, I do admit to believing Coruscant was blown up.

watch 1

2 and 3 are youtube classics. you never wanna watch the whole thing but there are scenes in there I will sometimes go back to.

edit: force awakens wasn't hard to follow or anything, but all of his movies move too fast. rarely ever lets you dwell on the details until you leave the theater. star trek 2 was the biggest offender of this imo. kinda enjoyed it in theaters, really didn't like it the next day haha.

Matrix isn't even a franchise to me. There was one good movie. The idea of "rebooting" it is bizarre.

We were just talking about Jurassic World. The latest movie in a franchise that has had the same plot 4 times in a row. It's as bad as Jaws having 3 sequels. Only in this instance, Jaws the Revenge makes $1.67B

That was a large part of why it was rated R, but that sort of thing isn't exactly critical to a Matrix movie.

I disagree. I think that being edgy and rebellious in visceral ways is very much critical to the Matrix identity as the Wachowskis saw it. The first movie was FIGHT THE MAN and SHOOT THE COPS. The second movie was RAVE and TRINITY'S O FACE. The turd movie was.... I dunno, I don't want to remember.

Eh, I don't agree. The movie is overtly anti-authority, pretty much to an extremist and militant level. That and the violence go hand in hand.

there's nothing wrong with a film being stuck in a time period, but that's exactly what the matrix is. if that was rebooted it would be nothing like it was except for the basic plot idea that we are living in a virtual world. that's it.

unless some director didn't give a shit and decided to make it 90's as fuck lol. would be pretty jarring.

For a second, I thought that little fucker from Jurassic World/Iron Man 3 was the kid from the Johnny Depp Willy Wonka movie and got REALLY confused

Yeah, while I appreciate a shorter run time (I'm getting old) tFA could really have been an extra 15 - 20 minutes. Sprinkle in at least the cut scene that gave depth to the Republic / Resistance relationship and some reason to care that Hosnia Prime or whatever was blown up. Beyond that, just some nice panorama shots to establish place and let the movie breathe a bit would've been grand.

I was going to argue that V for Vendetta was PG-13, but apparently that was R as well. All of these films are 14A in Canada (along with all the films that Duckroll listed as going PG-13), so it can be hard to keep track. Outside of the US, the Matrix gets 14-15 age categorizations, so I suppose it depends on the worldwide outlook.

Business-wise I can see some logic in trying a reboot doubling down on the martial arts aspect in a scifi setting, and going with some famous Chinese, Korean, and Japanese cast members. Not sure if it'll work though. If it craters in the domestic BO, the worldwide won't really save it enough to justify the loss. See: Edge of Tomrrow, Pacific Rim, Terminator Genisys.

Yup, I see it going possbly going Terminator.

I think Back to the Future is more likely to be rebooted than The Matrix.

It is better reboot material, but it's not happening in a long time, Zemeckis is strongly against it.

Comparing a Matrix reboot to the reception of Terminator after Cameron is probably the most likely.

Ironically I remember people trying to prop up Terminator 3 as "action sci-fi done right" during the Matrix Reloaded release after people were disappointed. Good god.

I can tell you that I am not a fan of the "20-30 years later!" blockbuster nostalgia movie trend if what we have gotten so far is an indication of things going forward. We're 1 for 3 this year.

Wait a min:

The Force Awakens
Fury Road
And since Creed is technically a sequel to Rocky IV (ugh) I'll allow it.
